The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency and the Nigerian Customs Service signed a memorandum of understanding to improve their collaboration in combating the country’s drug trafficking problem.

The NDLEA Chairman, Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa (retired), and the NCS Comptroller General, Col. Hameed Ali, signed the MoU on Tuesday at the NDLEA Headquarters in Abuja (retd.).

The MoU aims to assist both agencies in exchanging knowledge and tactics that will reinforce the nation’s ongoing fight against illicit drugs, The PUNCH reports.

In his speech during the signing, the NDLEA boss said with the MoU, both organisations would collaborate at inflicting maximum losses on drug cartels bent on trafficking illicit substances at the detriment of Nigeria and Nigerians.

Marwa said, “With this united front, there can only be one assurance that the criminal elements in our society will definitely be the losers and I assure you that they will certainly lose big as we come for them to put them where they rightly belong and cripple their crime syndicates.

“While there is no doubt as to the benefits that this MoU will provide to our two services and the nation at large, it is my hope that its successful execution and implementation will provide the necessary impetus for extension to other sister law enforcement agencies (LEAs) operating at our airports, seaports and land borders. On this basis, it is imperative to drive the implementation of the MoU to ensure that its objectives and derivable are achieved.

“Therefore, on behalf of the NDLEA, I assure you of our commitment to this MoU and intend to provide all the necessary support required to drive the implementation process in order to ensure the realisation of all accruable benefits. As it is usually said, together we stand and remain undefeatable.”

Marwa further added that the document contains several innovations that would encourage interpersonal relationships amongst the rank and file, as well as at the various levels of command and administration of the two organisations.

“It provides for joint training of personnel just as it makes provisions for regular meetings of command officers at various levels of our command structures. These are the meetings of commanders/comptrollers of the various relevant formations, at the relevant directorates/departments of the national headquarters and at the highest level of policy-making between the Comptroller-General of Customs and my office, Chairman/Chief Executive Officer, which is expected to take place at least twice a year.

“The expected outcome of these series of interactions is to foster better understanding of the respective roles and mandates of our two organisations and how they complement one another in a mutually inclusive way. The ultimate objective is to dissolve suspicion, friction and general interagency rivalry that does not do our nation any good in terms of effectively securing the entry and exit points of our dear country.

“This will provide an effective defence line at our various ports of entry/exit to prevent the influx of offensive materials and substances that undermine our national security, and ensure that our national assets are not smuggled out to undermine our economic progress and stability.”

In his remarks, the Customs boss said the MoU showed the two agencies’ commitment to save Nigeria from drugs and other substances.

He also thanked Marwa for initiating the partnership.

He said, “I want to reiterate that our coming together does not send a signal only to our nation but to the international partners, that we are committed to protecting our borders from illicit drugs. We have all along been doing this, finding drugs in the borders, but thank God the sole responsibility has been removed from us, and we had some relief.

“What we do now is that when we arrest the suspects, we hand them over to the NDLEA, where they will be pursued, investigated and punished severely.”

He further expressed the commitment of the NCS to the implementation of the MoU.

The Nigeria Customs Service, on Monday said  Private jet owners risk having their airplanes impounded, if they fail to verify their documents before July 6, 2021 when a month grace period would have expired.

The Public Relations Officer of NCS, Joseph Attah, disclosed this in Abuja at a media briefing to update the public on the ongoing audit of privately-owned aircraft operating in Nigeria.

The NSC, last month, had directed all private aircraft owners in the country to present relevant importation clearance documents to the agency for verification.

Attah said, “Within two weeks into the 30 days verification period, only six owners of private aircraft have responded to the invitation, necessitating this update and reminder to those who have not responded, to do so in order to avoid possible detention of their aircraft.

“We learnt some are coming today or tomorrow for verification. We also know that some brought their private jets under a temporary import certificate, which has expired and not renewed. These are infractions,” he said.

“At the end of the verification, some of the things we want to expose will come to light. We will make our findings known on July 6 after the expiration of the 30-day grace window.

“Those in default risk detention of their aircraft as nobody is above the law,” he added.

A six-month-old girl is in really bad shape at a Texas hospital after United States Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents apprehended her, her father and 21 other people who illegally crossed the Rio Grande into the United States, officials said Saturday.

A CBP spokesperson said the group was apprehended three miles west of the Roma Port of Entry at around 1:30 a.m. Thursday. The father and his daughter were taken to the Rio Grande Valley Sector’s Central Processing Center in McAllen, where medical staff said the child should be treated at a hospital.

The girl was initially transported to Edinburg Regional Children’s Hospital in Edinburg at 9:40 a.m., then was airlifted to Driscoll Children’s Hospital in Corpus Christi. The CBP statement added that the child’s father was driven to the hospital by CBP officers because there was no space for him in the medical helicopter.

Acting CBP Commissioner Mark Morgan told “Fox & Friends” Saturday that the case “truly is tragic.”

There has been a drastic increase in the number of families crossing the border — about 475,000 so far this budget year, nearly three times the previous full-year record for families. Most are released into the U.S. while their asylum requests wind through the courts — a practice Trump has derided as “catch-and-release.”

This week, the Trump administration said it was adopting changes to the so-called “Flores agreement,” which says that migrant children can only be detained for a maximum of 20 days and must be kept in the least restrictive setting. The government currently operates three family detention centers that can hold a total of about 3,000 people. One is being used for single adults, and the other two are at capacity.
