The life-saving intervention of Denmark’s players and medical staff after Christian Eriksen’s cardiac arrest at Euro 2020 has been nominated for FIFA’s Fair Play Award.

The former Tottenham midfielder went into cardiac arrest and collapsed shortly before half-time in Denmark’s opening game of the tournament against Finland in the summer.

Danish team doctor Morten Boesen later revealed the Inter Milan star was ‘gone’ before he was revived using CPR and a single defibrillator shock on the pitch, as distraught team-mates formed a protective ring around medics treating Eriksen.

Inter Milan’s Eriksen, who was later fitted with a defibrillator (ICD), has been told he will not be allowed to take to the field in Italy this season but could be able to play abroad.

Rules in Italy state that people with a defibrillator like Eriksen are not allowed to play contact sport. But the 29-year-old could theoretically continue his career in another country, with different rules.

Denmark is in the running for the FIFA accolade alongside former Celtic captain Scott Brown and Watford boss Claudio Ranieri.

Brown – now player-coach at Aberdeen – approached Kamara as the two side’s warmed up before last March’s Old Firm game at Celtic Park after the Rangers midfielder suffered racist abuse in a Europa League tie against Slavia Prague.

Slavia’s Ondrej Kudela was found guilty of using a racial slur toward Kamara and handed a 10-game ban by UEFA.

In a show of solidarity, Brown shook his rivals’ hand and put his arm around his back – an action that was reciprocated – as they spoke for a few minutes.

Claudio Ranieri, now the head coach of Premier League side Watford, has also been shortlisted for the award.

ast season, his Sampdoria side performed a guard of honour for Antonio Conte’s Inter after they won their first Serie A title since 2010.

Denmark captain Simon Kjaer and the medical team are the recipients of this year’s Uefa President’s Award for saving Christian Eriksen’s life. Eriksen, 29, suffered cardiac arrest during Denmark’s Euro 2020 defeat by Finland in Copenhagen on 12 June, with Kjaer and the stadium’s medical staff reacting quickly to help resuscitate him on the pitch.

The AC Milan defender, 32, put Eriksen in the recovery position and started the initial CPR procedure before leading the Danish players to form a ring around Eriksen as he received medical attention and comforted Eriksen’s partner.

Kjaer said “It’s something that will stay with us for the rest of our lives, the team reacted as a unit…as a team, we made the maximum effort to stick together and try to get through that situation and be as helpful as possible. I try to lead the team on and off the pitch, in every aspect of life, as footballers, when we’re together. I think it’s one of the biggest privileges I have had in my career. I’ve known Christian for many years. He has a great family, he has a lot of friends, a lot of teammates that want the best for him. As long as he’s happy and his family is good, I’m happy.”

The medical team responded quickly and resuscitated Eriksen with CPR and a defibrillator before he was stretchered off and taken to the hospital.

Mogens Kreutzfeldt “We rushed to the field to help [Christian] and to do our job, we did what we should, what we were taught, what we were trained to do. Everybody knew their role, everybody knew what to do. We were not emotional at the scene. Afterwards, we were, of course, like everybody. We’re very happy and proud of the outcome”
