At a recent Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) roundtable meeting in Abuja, stakeholders passionately appealed to philanthropists for financial contributions to expedite the elimination of NTDs in Nigeria, aiming to meet the 2030 target.

The call to action coincided with the commemoration of Sightsavers’ 70th anniversary in the country.

During the meeting, Dr. Chukwuma Anyaike, the Director of Public Health at the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, emphasized the pivotal role increased funding could play in eradicating NTDs, enhancing overall health, and curbing mortality and morbidity rates in the nation.

Dr. Anyaike stressed the need for an investment case and collaborative efforts across sectors to effectively address these diseases, urging strategic planning and budget allocation for the upcoming year.

Dr. Fatai Oyediran, the NTD national Coordinator at the ministry, outlined existing strategies to mobilize funds from local resources for NTD elimination.

Oyediran specifically called on prominent philanthropists such as Aliko Dangote, Femi Otedola, Emeka Offor, T.Y. Danjuma, and others to support the government in the concerted effort to eliminate these diseases.

Sightsavers Country Representative, Sunday Isiyaku, highlighted the organization’s significant progress in NTD elimination, improvements in eye health, and advancements in disability rights in Nigeria.

Isiyaku expressed his commitment to a future where NTD risks are minimized, quality eye care is universally accessible, and individuals with disabilities thrive in an inclusive society.

Isiyaku disclosed that a cost estimate of $18.2 million was in place to support elimination efforts in several Nigerian states.

Existing donors have pledged just under $7 million, and Sightsavers plans to contribute over $5 million for trachoma elimination in Nigeria through 2030, with the intention to secure additional funding through public fundraising.

Isiyaku emphasized the need for an estimated $5.8 million to ensure comprehensive funding for all activities in Nigeria, anticipating further support between the present and 2028.
