Perri, cousin of late student of Dowen College Sylvester Oromoni has accused the Lagos state police command of “hoarding” his second autopsy result.

Perri who made the claim while remembering his cousin’s death one month after, also stated that while the house masters of the school are still locked up, the “killers” have been freed on bail.

Perri also praised senior lawyer, Femi Falana, adding that if not for him, the case would have been closed like many other cases. He also said that they need clarity on the court date from authorities.

Report of Sylvester Oromoni’s death after allegedly being bullied by his seniors in the Lagos school, led to an outcry including high profile reactions weeks ago, as many demanded for justice.

The family of late Sylvester Oromoni, Jnr, the 12-year-old student of Dowen College, Lagos State, who was allegedly tortured by his seniors before his death, has kicked against the bail granted by a Magistrate’s court in Yaba to the five students of the school

Recall that on Tuesday, the Magistrate court granted N1 million bail to five students of Dowen College charged with the alleged murder of Oromoni. The Chief Magistrate, Olatunbosun Adeola, after hearing the bail application filed by the counsel for the defendants, ordered the defendants to produce two sureties each in like sum.

Reacting to this development, the father of the deceased student, Sylvester Oromoni Snr, wondered the rationale behind the bail when the 21 days requested by the police for investigation was yet to elapse.

He said “Yesterday I was called that those boys were granted bail by a Magistrate Court in Yaba, Lagos. I said, “why?” I now called the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State and he told me; I was not aware, and that they were not done with the investigation.I called the DCP in charge of the case who later confirmed to me that the story is true. But it was a surprise to me that the same judge gave them 21 days which expires on the 28 of this month when the police requested for the remand order. The court granted 21 days to keep those boys. And the 21 days have not expired, and the court granted them bail. I am calling on President Muhammadu Buhari, the Lagos State Government and the Inspector General of Police to please take note.Secondly, the police said they are not done with the investigation, that granting the boys bail will not help their investigation, they are getting more facts. And they were even planning that after the 21 days if they are not done with their investigation, they will ask for an extension. I am surprised that the court granted them bail when the date given has not elapsed.I am not a lawyer but what the family is saying is that they should allow the police to conclude their investigation. I am not saying that they should not be granted bail but it is the court that gave the police 21 days”

The family of 12-year-old Sylvester Oromoni (Junior), a pupil of the Dowen College, Lekki, Lagos, who died under controversial circumstances, has demanded a coroner inquest into his death.

The news of Sylvester’s death went viral last Wednesday following a social media post by his cousin, Perry Oromoni, who alleged that some senior pupils of the college beat him up in his hostel because he refused to join a cult.

But the school denied the claim, stating that the boy complained of leg pains following an injury he sustained while playing football.

The state government, on Friday, ordered the indefinite closure of the school pending the outcome of an investigation into the matter.

Officials of the Lagos State Ministry of Education stormed the school in the early hours of Sunday and sealed the premises.

The Falana and Falana Chambers, on behalf of the family, petitioned the chief coroner of Lagos State on Monday, demanding an inquest into the death.

The petition read in part, “We have been briefed by the family of the late Sylvester Oromoni, a student of Dowen College, Lekki, Lagos, who died from the injuries he allegedly sustained from the beating by his colleagues who wanted him to join their cult. Given the needless death of Sylvester Oromoni, we are compelled to request you to use your good offices to cause a coroner’s inquest to be conducted into the cause of death of this young and promising boy and make appropriate recommendations pursuant to Section 15 of the Lagos State Coroner’s Law 2007, which provides that an inquest shall hold whenever a coroner is informed that the death of a deceased person within his coroner district is as a result of a death in a violent, unnatural or suspicious situation.”

Dowen College has told parents and students that they will continue the academic session online after the Lagos State Government ordered that the school be closed indefinitely.

The state government said the school will remain closed pending the outcome of the investigation into the death of Sylvester Oromoni Jr. allegedly tortured in school by other students.

Dowen had initially asked students to stay at home for two days, adding that school will resume next week for exams.

This led to outrage as Nigerians asked why the school is carrying on with exams when a student died due to an incident that allegedly happened in the school.

Dowen College has now sent another message to parents and students following the announcement by the Lagos State Government that the school will remain shut indefinitely.

In the mail, Dowen assured parents that they will continue online.

The management of Dowen College, Lekki, Lagos, has denied the allegation that 12-year-old Sylvester Oromoni was tortured to death for refusing to join cultism

Oromoni’s death became public knowledge after a family member, identified as Perri, posted about the incident on social media

On Wednesday, a family member alleged that the Junior Secondary School 2 pupil died from the injuries he sustained during an assault by fellow students who wanted to initiate him into cultism

Using his Twitter handle, @Perrisonoromoni, he claimed that before his cousin died, he identified five pupils who brutalised him for refusing to join a cult

He noted that Oromoni suffered internal injuries afterwards, and died while receiving treatment in a hospital.

However, a statement by Dowen College Principal, Mrs Adebisi Layiwola, said “the whole incident was strange and unbelievable because the school had effective anti-bullying policies and consequences are well spelt out to all the students. The preliminary investigation showed that there was no fighting, bullying or any form of attack on the boy; he made no such reports, neither his sister who is also a student or any other students, prefects, house parents, medical staff or any of the management staff. The school has two regular nurses and a qualified medical doctor that promptly attend to students’ medical needs and the resident doctor followed the laid down procedure by inviting his mother to take him home for further treatment after initial treatment by the school’s medical staff.

“On the 21st day of November 2021, one of the Hostel Parents reported to management that the young boy was injured while playing football. The resident registered nurse immediately administered first aid on him and after he expressed relief, was released to return to his hostel room. “He was in class on Monday 22nd day of November 2021, but during school hours one of his friends accompanied him to the Sick Bay where he complained of some pain in his hip. The doctor examined him and prescribed Ibuprofen for the pain, while the nurse massaged his leg, after which he felt a bit better.

“In accordance with school policy, the resident doctor called his mother reporting the incident and requesting that she come for him so that he could get further medical attention. The mother, however, said she was not in Lagos. She spoke and prayed with him on the phone and promised to send the guardian to pick him up immediately for further medical attention. When the guardian failed to show up, the next day on the 23rd of November 2021, the doctor called the mother again and this time, she assured that his guardian would pick him from school. His guardian showed up and took him for X-ray after which the guardian informed the school management that the results of the investigation revealed that no part of his body was broken or injured. The resident doctor also called the mother later in the week to check up on his progress but she informed the doctor that he was sleeping at the time.”

Furthermore, the principal said she also spoke with the mother on the phone to enquire about his progress and she was told that he was having a massage, adding that the boy spoke to him on phone

The statement continued, “As a result, it came as no small shock to us to read on the social media that he was beaten by some students and that he specifically mentioned some names. We immediately commenced investigations and invited the students allegedly mentioned for interview. His guardian was also present during the interviews, which revealed that nothing of such happened. The school has a very cordial relationship with the family as he is the fifth child of the family Dowen College has the privilege to train, including his elder sister who is currently a student at the school.Furthermore, we state categorically Dowen College is built on core values of godliness and excellence and will not tolerate any acts of cultism, which is why there is nothing like that and there has never been such deviant activities going on, as this is a faith based school and effective policies are in place to prevent such occurrence. We are deeply saddened by the death of this young man who had such a bright future ahead of him. We extend our deepest sympathy and heart-felt condolences to his beloved family, relatives, friends, classmates and the alumni family at this very difficult time.”
