The Federal Government has restated commitment to make Ekiti State a major Free Trade Zone in Nigeria.

The government said this would support the state in delivering economic and knowledge-free zone where education-based industries and technological companies could operate.

The Managing Director of the Nigeria Export Processing Zone Authority, Prof. Adesoji Adesugba, said this during a courtesy visit to the state governor, Biodun Oyebanji in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital, on Thursday.

Adesugba said the establishment of the economic zone would boost the economy of the state and increase its Internally Generated Revenue as well as reduce over-reliance on federal allocation.

He commended Ekiti government for being proactive by creating education and knowledge zone.

The NEPZA boss gave the assurance that the free trade zone would be ready within 18 months, adding that he was in Ekiti to confirm the commitment of the Federal Government toward the successful completion of the project.

He called on drivers and captains of industries to invest in the state when the zone was ready.

“I personally came to Ekiti to express the commitment of the Federal Government of Nigeria to support the state in delivering economic and knowledge free zone.

“Government is committed to making Ekiti home of block chain technology, where technological companies and other industries that have things to do with education will be ready to invest.

”Ekiti is known for education and ideas innovation and this is where we are going to show the world that Nigeria has arrived,” he said.

The NEPZA managing director further said that the first thing was to get presidential declaration to make Ekiti a free zone.

”Oyebanji has given a matching order and within 18 months, we will get so many industries, both virtual and on-sight there,” he said.

Adesugba gave the assurance that people were already planning and working, and on the part of NEPZA, it would ensure the approval of the president.

In his remarks, Oyebanji said there was the need for the Federal Government to fast-track the completion of the project to attract more investors to the state, adding that productivity would always lead to shared prosperity.

Only pupils in Senior Secondary School (SSS) 3 class will resume to sit for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) in Lagos and Ogun states.

Recall that the Federal Government had on Monday, 27 July said schools could reopen on August 4 so pupils could revise for two weeks in preparation for the examination which is scheduled to begin on August 17.

Lagos State Commissioner for Education Mrs Folasade Adefisayo, and the Special Adviser to the Ogun State Governor on Education, Mrs Ronke Soyombo, confirmed this to The Nation on Tuesday.

However, Ekiti Commissioner for Education Mr Foluso Daramola said SS3 pupils would resume, but that the state had not decided on whether Junior Secondary Three (JS3) pupils would also return.

“I am just coming from a meeting at the governor’s office on the issue.  We will issue a statement on it,” she said.

The Special Adviser to the Ogun State Governor on Education said schools considered to be high risk in Ogun would not be allowed to reopen, noting that such schools would be identified through their responses in an online reopening form.

In the form, schools are given the options of “risky” (coded red), “moderate” (yellow) or “none” (green) in response to questions about their readiness for resumption.

Soyombo said schools have until Friday evening to submit the form, which can be downloaded from the ministry’s website.

She said: “For schools that fill mostly red (risky) in all the fields, we will not reopen them.  We may need to do a contingency plan for their students.”

She said the state has met with stakeholders on the reopening, while risk assessment training has been conducted.

Soyombo said public schools in Ogun had been provided with water, soap and other facilities in line with the requirements for resumption.

Federal Government Colleges (unity schools) will resume on August 4 for SS3 pupils only.

Director of Press and Public Relations, Federal Ministry of Education, Mr Ben Gong, said the Presidential Task Force (PTF) would announce on Thursday whether JSS3 pupils would resume.

Also yesterday, Benue State Government approved the reopening of schools for SS3 pupils.

Commissioner for Education Prof Dennis Ityavyar, said JSS 3 pupils would also resume.

He said the government had put necessary measures in place to curtail the spread of COVID-19.

He urged parents to ensure their children wear facemasks and observe other safety precautions.

On the planned handover of missionary schools to their owners, Ityavyar said a committee headed by the Secretary to the Government, Prof Anthony Ijohor, had been set up to make recommendations within a week.

Speaking at Efon Alaaye during a sensitisation tour to Ekiti West, Efon Alaaye and Ijero Local government areas of the State, Komolafe averred that the neglect of traditional culture and patterns of exposing criminals is one of the reasons for the rising spate of crimes in the South-West region. He charged traditional rulers to deploy their supernatural prowess to secure the lives and properties of their people.

Komolafe said  “We want people that can enter the bush and give us native intelligence about criminal hideouts. People before us rose and fought invaders, we also want to rise and fight invaders. These invaders came with all forms of impunity, they kill, maim, rape and destroy people’s farm produce.”

The Ekiti State government has expressed concern over the increasing reports of sexual abuse of women and children.

The Commissioner for Justice and Attorney General, Mr Olawale Fapounda, disclosed this at a press briefing in Ado, the state capital.

The Commissioner cautioned offenders to cease from such violations, taking note of that the government would not waver to glue the photos of guilty parties in open space.

He clarified that the government has made plans to battle the primitive act with stiffer measures and guarantee the security of the defenseless.

Fapounda reverberated that sentenced sex offenders would now have their photos obviously glued in their networks, among different measures to control the act.

“In addition to existing measures, we will now start pasting photographs of convicted sex offenders in prominent public spaces within their communities and their local government headquarters; uploading the pictures of the convicts on the website of the Ministry of Justice; and showing photographs and reading the names of sex offenders on the state radio and television station,” the commissioner stated.

He added that some of the other measures taken to curb sexual offences include notifying traditional rulers of the status of convicts and running psychiatric tests for arrested sex abuse suspects.
