Iran’s Civil Aviation Organization said in a second preliminary investigation report that a Ukrainian passenger plane that crashed after taking off from the Iranian capital on Jan. 8 was downed by two short-range surface-to-air missiles.

The Tor-M1 missiles were launched at the Kyiv-bound Boeing 737-800 jetliner from the north, according to the report.

The report further said that the plane took off from Tehran at 6:12 a.m. local time and lost all contact with air traffic control at 8,100 feet.

Aircraft disappeared from secondary surveillance radar screens at 6:15 a.m. and from primary surveillance radars at 6:18 a.m, the report added.

French and US accident investigation agencies have refused to send necessary equipment to Iran for decoding the black boxes.

Last week, US President Donald Trump has strongly denied allegations he ordered a campaign pressuring Ukrainian officials to investigate the business dealings of former vice president Biden and his son, part of the impeachment inquiry that will formally read out charges facing the president in the Senate.

The Kiev-bound UIA Boeing 737, crashed shortly after taking off from Tehran on January 8, killing all 176 people on board, mostly Iranian and Canadian citizens. The caskets were to remain for a while at the airport terminal so that relatives and members of the airline could say their last goodbyes.

Tehran admitted it had mistakenly shot down the plane several days later. Ukraine’s leader has demanded that Iran punish those guilty for the downing of the airliner and compensate the victims. Iran’s Prime Minister Hassan Rouhani had tweeted that the country ‘deeply regrets’ the ‘disastrous mistake.’

On January 12, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani promised a further investigation into the circumstances surrounding the plane crash while having a telephonic conversation with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

A prominent Maltese businessman has been charged as an accomplice in the 2017 car bomb assassination of anti-corruption reporter Daphne Caruana Galizia.

Yorgen Fenech, a leading hotelier and former director of the Maltese power company, was also charged Saturday with promoting, organizing or financing a group with the intention of committing a crime.

It wasn’t immediately clear whether the “group” referred to the three men being held since December 2017 on charges of carrying out the bombing.

Fenech pleaded not guilty in the evening courtroom hearing, just 10 days after police arrested him aboard his yacht as it was sailing away from Malta.

He was detained a day after a man identified as the alleged middleman in the murder plot agreed to give authorities information leading to the individual who ordered the killing in exchange for a presidential pardon.

Fenech’s name was on leaked documents as a source of income for companies named in the Panama Papers, a financial scandal Caruana Galizia was investigating before her death. She alleged that Maltese politicians were linked to companies named in the papers.

Following Caruana Galizia’s death, her reporting was continued by the Daphne Project. The group reported last year that Malta’s anti-laundering watchdog identified Fenech as the owner of 17 Black, the businessman’s clandestine Dubai-registered company.

Leaked emails showed the company stood to make payments to two Panama companies – one being listed in the name of Prime Minister Joseph Muscat’s chief of staff – for unspecified services.

Keith Schembri resigned as Muscat’s chief of staff last week after police detained him for questioning in the murder. Police said there weren’t grounds to hold him and he was later released. He has denied any wrongdoing.

Meanwhile, the embattled Muscat has been facing calls to resign over the alleged links of Schembri to the murder of Caruana Galizia.

While the prime minister’s fellow Labor Party lawmakers have backed him with a pledge of confidence, local media have said Muscat, who has held power since 2013, might stay in office until January, when a party congress must elect a new leader.

A six-year-old boy who was thrown down from the 10th-floor viewing gallery at London’s Tate Modern museum is listed as stable but in a very critical state at a hospital as authorities on Monday said that they were still searching for a motive in the attack.

The Metropolitan Police said in a news release the 6-year-old boy was thrown from the tenth-floor viewing platform, landing on a fifth-floor roof before he was transported to a hospital by London’s Air Ambulance. As of Monday afternoon, police said the child’s condition was critical but stable and his life was no longer in danger. He remains at a hospital with his family, who are French nationals visiting London.

“This was a truly shocking incident, and people will understandably be searching for answers,” senior investigating officer DCI John Massey said in a statement.

A 17-year-old male is held in suspicion of attempted murder over the incident, which happened just while the gallery was packed with visitors.

“We are grateful for the support of the public, some of whom detained the male arrested in the immediate aftermath of the incident,” Massey said. “He was arrested by officers very quickly afterward.”

Nancy Barnfield told the Associated Press she was at the gallery with her family when she heard a “loud bang,” and then saw a woman screaming “Where’s my son, where’s my son?”

Barnfield said that a man on the platform was restrained by other visitors until police arrived. She said he “just stood there and was quite calm.”

Authorities said they don’t believe the suspect and victim knew each other, and the incident was “being treated as an isolated event with no distinct or apparent motive.”
