President Bola Tinubu has called on Nigerians to remain patient, assuring them that the country is on the brink of a new and positive era.

Speaking on Wednesday, Tinubu acknowledged the difficulties faced by citizens due to the removal of the fuel subsidy and admitted that a delay in implementing his planned reforms exacerbated the situation.

“Fellow Nigerians, this period may be hard on us, and there’s no doubt it is tough, but I urge you to look beyond the present temporary pains and focus on the larger picture.

All our good and helpful plans are underway and will work. Sadly, there was an avoidable lag between the subsidy removal and the full implementation of these plans,” Tinubu stated.

The President emphasized that the measures his administration is taking are designed to address the ongoing economic challenges and urged the public to trust in his government’s commitment.

He highlighted upcoming initiatives, including making education more affordable and providing financial support for higher education students.

“We will fulfill our promise to make education more accessible and provide loans to students in need. No Nigerian student will have to abandon their higher education due to financial constraints,” Tinubu assured.

The President reaffirmed his commitment to achieving the greatest good for the majority and expressed confidence in overcoming current difficulties. “We are moving from darkness to a new and glorious dawn. I must get back to work to make this vision a reality,” he added.

This is President Tinubu’s second address to the nation amid ongoing tensions in various regions.

The Federal Government of Nigeria is actively pursuing a goal to slash transportation costs by more than 50%, according to the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris.

This announcement came during a meeting with the National Executive Committee of the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN) on Thursday.

Idris explained that the introduction of the Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) Initiative is a strategic move by the government, especially in the aftermath of the removal of the fuel subsidy, which led to an expected increase in the price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS).

“The Federal Government immediately thought it wise, in addition to other measures, to introduce the CNG. The CNG is expected to bring down the cost of transportation by more than 50 per cent and I am happy that IPMAN is in the forefront in this vanguard of achieving the CNG Initiative,” he stated.

Highlighting the bold move by President Tinubu in removing the fuel subsidy, Idris emphasized that this presented a unique opportunity for organizations like IPMAN to lead in shaping Nigeria’s energy landscape.

He pointed out that the country has been actively seeking alternative ways to reduce transportation costs, and the CNG is considered the most effective solution.

The minister also highlighted the Federal Government’s commitment to the initiative, with the allocation of N100 billion for the purchase of CNG buses and the establishment of CNG centers nationwide.

Additionally, tax waivers have been introduced for importers of CNG kits and other investors in the sub-sector, further supporting the development of the CNG infrastructure.

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) announced on Friday that it will embark on a nationwide strike starting from next Wednesday.

The decision by the NLC to initiate the strike comes in response to the recent fuel scarcity plaguing the country, which was further exacerbated by President Bola Tinubu’s announcement during his inaugural speech.

In his address, President Tinubu boldly declared the end of fuel subsidy, sparking concerns among the labor union and citizens nationwide.

The nationwide strike is an effort by the NLC to express their discontent and demand immediate action to address the mounting fuel scarcity crisis.

This move signifies the NLC’s determination to advocate for the rights and welfare of workers, highlighting the importance of affordable and accessible fuel as a vital component in the lives of Nigerians.

The removal of fuel subsidy has raised fears among the populace regarding the potential impact on the cost of living and transportation.

As fuel scarcity persists, citizens have been facing increased challenges in accessing fuel for their daily needs, leading to longer queues at petrol stations and disruptions to daily activities.

The NLC’s decision to embark on a nationwide strike is aimed at pressing the government to reconsider the removal of fuel subsidy and find sustainable solutions to alleviate the fuel scarcity crisis.

The labor union intends to utilize this strike as a means to negotiate and engage in dialogue with the government, urging them to address the concerns of the Nigerian people.

As the strike is set to commence next Wednesday, Nigerians are advised to prepare for possible disruptions in various sectors, including transportation, banking, and public services.

The NLC has urged its members and workers across the country to actively participate in the strike, demonstrating their unity and determination to secure a favorable resolution to the ongoing fuel scarcity crisis.

The NLC’s nationwide strike serves as a reminder of the significant role labor unions play in safeguarding the rights and interests of workers.

The outcome of this strike and subsequent negotiations will likely have a profound impact on the future of fuel subsidies and labor relations in Nigeria.

The NLC has called on the government to promptly engage in constructive dialogue to resolve the current crisis, emphasizing the urgent need for effective policies that prioritize the welfare and well-being of Nigerian citizens.

As the nation braces for the impending strike, all eyes will be on the government’s response and their commitment to addressing the concerns raised by the NLC and the wider populace.

The Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) on Tuesday said President Bola Tinubu does not possess the authority to independently abolish subsidy payments on petroleum products within the country.

The TUC emphasized that the newly inaugurated President should exercise patience and allow for extensive dialogue, consultation, and engagement with stakeholders before making any decisions on this “delicate” matter.

The Congress highlighted numerous issues that must be amicably addressed and resolved prior to the President’s ability to make such a decision.

In a joint statement signed by TUC’s President, Festus Osifo, and Secretary General, Nuhu Toro, they expressed, “Nigerian workers and the masses should not bear the brunt of the inefficiency of successive governments.”

During Tinubu’s inaugural speech at the Eagle Square in Abuja on Monday, he announced the end of the era of subsidy payments for fuel, citing the absence of a provision for fuel subsidy in the 2023 Budget and the lack of justifiability for such payments.

Tinubu emphasized that his administration would redirect funds towards infrastructure and other areas to bolster the economy.

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has supported Tinubu’s stance on fuel subsidy removal.

Since the President’s pronouncement, fuel queues have reappeared across the country as Nigerians search for the essential product.

The TUC asserted that the President cannot unilaterally decide on subsidy removal, pointing out that the immediate past administration of Muhammadu Buhari intentionally handed over the “sensitive issue” to the new government for a reason.

President Bola Tinubu’s decision to remove the petroleum subsidy has left Nigerians feeling its impact, and now the House of Representatives is urging the public to pray for the successful implementation of this policy.

During a session on Tuesday, Abdulraheem Olajide presented a motion of urgent public importance, commending President Tinubu for his announcement the day before. It should be noted that Tinubu had declared the removal of the subsidy during his inauguration, which subsequently led to a shortage of petroleum products.

Mr. Olajide emphasized the importance of supporting Tinubu in this subsidy removal, as it was a promise he campaigned on. He stated, “The legislature must stand behind the President in delivering the benefits of democracy, which will greatly contribute to national development. He requested and campaigned for this change, and he is prepared for the challenges that lie ahead.”

Consequently, the House has resolved to call upon Nigerians to exercise patience, resilience, and offer prayers to enable the President to fulfill his promises.

Despite several members expressing their desire to participate in the debate, Femi Gbajabiamila prevented any further discussion on the motion.
