The Governor of Ondo State, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu has declared a seven-day mourning in the State following the attack on Saint Francis Catholic Church in Owo by gunmen.

This was contained in a statement issued by Akeredolu’s Chief Press Secretary, Richard Olatunde on Monday.

According to the statement, Akeredolu ordered all public buildings, facilities, and official residence in the State to fly flags at half-mast for seven days in honour of the victims of the Sunday terror assault.

Akeredolu stated that the attack on the church’s innocent worshipers was a deliberate and calculated strike on the people of the State.

The Governor added that those who unleashed the unprovoked terror attack on the people have tested the collective resolves of everyone.

The statement read, “We will not be deterred in responding appropriately to this dastardly act.

“In honour of the victims of this unfortunate attack, I hereby direct that all flags be flown at half-mast for seven days, starting from today, Monday, June 6, to Sunday, June 12, 2022.

“It is a collective loss to the people of our dear State.”

Southwest governors and the leadership of Miyetti Allah are set to meet on Monday, January 25, as Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu’s ultimatum for herdsmen to vacate forest reserves in Ondo state expires.

The meeting which will be held in Akure, the state capital, is meant to find lasting solutions to the incessant killings, kidnapping, and crises between herdsmen and farmers in the region.

A media aide to one of the Southwest governors who preferred anonymity told reporters in Akure that his boss would attend the meeting.

He said “The whole thing was about the misconception. We all know the Presidency misinterpreted the Ondo State government’s directive. They took it to mean a total action which intended to clear the state of all herders. And while admitting that the spokesman to Mr President acted hastily and without proper authorisation, they (Presidency) have reached out to other governors to facilitate a meeting where the leadership of Miyyetti Allah would likely plead for time to comply with the directive. My principal is involved and very concerned too because this is a Yoruba matter and not a personal issue between Aketi and the herders. So we are coming to Akure for the meeting tomorrow at 12. We need to give the honour to our chairman, the governor of Ondo State who is even leading the fight against insecurity in the region”.

Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State has called on the police to hasten the release of the Federal High Court Judge, Ondo division, Justice Abdul Dogo from his abductors.

Akeredolu said that synergy among Ondo, Edo and Kogi police commands will ensure seamless rescue operation towards freeing Justice Dogo.

Recall that Justice Dogo was kidnapped alongside his driver by gunmen suspected to be kidnappers while on their way from Abuja to Akure on Tuesday evening.

The governor who spoke through his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Ojo Oyewamide via a statement stated that, “the Governor of Ondo State, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Odunayo Akeredolu has received with concern the news of the abduction of Hon. Justice Abdul Dogo.

“Justice Dogo is a Judge of the Federal High Court, Akure Division, and was said to have been kidnapped at Ibilo, Edo State, while returning from Abuja.

“Notwithstanding that the unpleasant incident happened outside the territory of Ondo State, Governor Akeredolu says the kidnap of any Nigerian anywhere must elicit a pan-Nigerian reaction and empathy.

“In this particular case, Mr Governor is disturbed and deeply concerned that Dogo serves the Federal Judiciary in Ondo.

“While charging the Ondo State Police Command to synergize with its Edo and Kogi counterparts to effect the early release of Justice Dogo, Governor Akeredolu admonishes that seemingly incorrect narrative on the heels of such critical situations as kidnap are capable of disrupting the focus and attention of the appropriate intelligence architectures.

“The case of Justice Dogo who was said to have been kidnapped in Ondo rather than Ibilo in Edo State is a relevant case study that could hamper proper and adequate intelligence gathering.”
