Four days after an Uber driver, Adedotun Clement was tortured by some policemen and officials of the Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps, the police authorities have yet to begin disciplinary procedures against the cops.

However, the LNSC had since suspended two officers over their roles in the incident.

Attacks on protesters were filmed by residents and journalists, who were present at the scene.

A clip showing the beating of Clement, however, went viral.

In the clip, policemen and officials of the LNSC were seen slapping and using pepper spray on the driver, as he protested against being locked up in a Black Maria and begged to be identified.

He also apologised to the victim, saying the state government placed a high premium on its relationship with residents.

However, the state Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosu, on Sunday, said the police could do nothing without an official complaint.

He said, “To the best of my knowledge, no single officer has been reported to have committed an infraction. The officers of the Neighborhood Watch were identified. I was there at the protest ground and I said if any policeman has done something contrary to our professional calling, let me know. No one has come to make a formal complaint. I told a journalist on that day that we have our procedure; we need an official complaint to be able to try any policeman that has been complained against. If you know the policeman that assaulted you and you also have witnesses, lodge a formal complaint against the policeman. There must be a complainant; we have internal trials as we don’t train people on the pages of newspapers; somebody needs to stand and give evidence. The Uber driver has not lodged any complaint; I got his number, called him personally and he told me about his vehicle and I called the General Manager, LASTMA, forwarded his number to him that they should release his vehicle. He has not lodged any complaint against anybody and our disciplinary procedure must be documented.”

The Lagos State Police Command has refuted claims of alleged torture and killing of Omolola Rotimi Ejioye, by policemen attached to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Panti.

Ejioye, aka Eji, died in police custody on May 7, five days after he was allegedly arrested at Ladega area of Ikorodu.

The State Commissioner of Police, CP Hakeem Odumosu, in a statement issued on Monday, May 10, said late Ejioye was not tortured to death but died at Falomo Police Hospital, Ikoyi, where he was admitted after falling sick.

He said “The Lagos State Police Command has deemed it necessary to refute and clear the air on the alleged torture and killing of one Omolola Rotimi Ejioye, aka Eji, by the operatives of the State Criminal Investigation Department, Panti, Yaba on Sunday 9th May 2021, contrary to the news making waves on the social media. The Command wishes to state in clear terms that a case of suspected murder was transferred from the Ikorodu Division of Lagos State to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Panti, Yaba-Lagos on 4th May 2021 for discreet investigation. One Rotimi Omolola, the deceased, was equally brought along with the case file and other suspects. On 7th May 2021, at about 4 am, the attention of the officers on duty at the State CID, Panti, was drawn to the strange behaviour of the suspect, Omolola, suggesting an underlining illness and he was quickly rushed to Falomo Police Hospital, Ikoyi, Lagos where he gave up the ghost while on admission. The corpse has been deposited at the mortuary for the performance of Autopsy to ascertain the probable cause of death. The Command, therefore, urges the general public to disregard the fake, unfounded and mischievous news which has been in circulation by certain individuals to distort the fact and escalate misinformation on the incident, for reasons best known to them”

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has denied claims that its members are planning to attack Lagos State.

On Monday, May 10, the Lagos state police commissioner, Hakeem Odumosu at a security meeting with the state governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, said the command has received intelligence that some members of the secessionist group were planning to attack the state as some of the members have done in some states in the South-South and South-East regions.

Reacting to the claim,  IPOB spokesperson, Emma Powerful, urged the public to disregard the allegation and accused the state Commissioner of Police of plotting to create disharmony between Ndígbo and Yorubas.

Powerful’s statement in part reads “The public is hereby notified that the allegations that IPOB is plotting to attack Lagos is a lie. Lagos State CP, Hakeem Odumosu who made the allegation is a former CSO to Tinubu and their intention is to fuel division between Yorubas & Biafrans. It won’t work. This is not 1967,”

American nurse, Kari-Ann O’Rourke has been released from police custody after spending 44 days in detention.

Kari-Ann R’ouke filed a lawsuit against the Commissioner of Police in Lagos, Hakeem Odumosu, and the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of State Criminal Investigation Department, Panti, Yaba, Adegoke Fayoade over her ‘unlawful and indefinite detention.

The nurse in the lawsuit filed before the federal high court in Lagos through her counsel Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa disclosed that she was arrested on February 9 and has been detained indefinitely over the death of her partner.

Her lawyer, Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa told newsmen that she was released on Wednesday, March 24. He also disclosed that the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP) in their advice said the office shall not prosecute his client for the offences of conspiracy to murder as the medical report attached to the duplicate case file establishes that the cause of the deceased’s death was an acute cardiac failure and hypertensive heart disease.

Adegboruwa said “In the course of time, Kari Ann’s lawyer discovered, upon further investigation, that the case file had been forwarded to the Lagos State Ministry of Justice a long ago and that a legal opinion had been issued by the Director of Public Prosecutions, to the extent that there was no prima facie case worthy of prosecution. In the Legal Advice dated March 5, 2021, and signed by the DPP, it was stated as follows: The medical report attached to the duplicate case file establishes that the cause of the deceased’s death was an acute cardiac failure and hypertensive heart disease.  They should therefore be discharged and released if still in custody, as there is no case to be established against them from the facts presented in the duplicate case file”

A mobile court sitting at the Lagos State Task Force on Environmental and Special Offences Enforcement Unit in Oshodi has convicted 172 persons arrested by the state police command for violating COVID-19 protocols.

The state police command said on Monday that the presiding judge ordered each of the 172 violators to pay a fine of N40,000, and also sentenced them to community service.

The state Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosu while parading them at the command headquarters in Ikeja, said the 172 persons were arrested during a raid on the Cubana Nightclub, Victoria Island, on Saturday.

Odumosu said, “Despite all the efforts and COVID-19 policies being rolled out by the government, most youths, who are leaders of tomorrow, still find it difficult to comply. Self-compliance is what matters most; the ladies and gentlemen here were arrested around 2 am on Saturday at the Cubana Nightclub on Victoria Island. When we got there, 172 violators were inside one club and were not observing social distancing. We have footage of them in the club and aiding the spread of COVID-19. We will charge them and we will comply with whatever decision the court makes. Our job is to get them arrested for violating COVID-19 regulations and present them before the court of law. It is at the discretion of the magistrate or the presiding judge to decide the judgment that will be meted out to them. The owner of the hotel was not there, he disappeared, but recall that same happened when we raided the Victoria Club, but after his staff members called him, he came out of hiding and we charged him. The same thing happened at Club 38 in Bode Thomas, Surulere. The owner of this club will also be arrested and charged because if he didn’t open the club, people won’t go there. The Cubana Club we first raided was in Ikeja, this new one is on the island. People must know that clubbing has been banned and they must obtain approval from the Lagos State Safety Commission for all other social engagements.”

The Commissioner of Police in Lagos State, Hakeem Odumosu, has warned traditionalists in the Ikorodu Local Government Area of the state to stop fortifying cultists and criminals in the area.

The police chief gave the warning while speaking at the 2021 Ikorodu Town Hall Meeting on Security held in the community on Wednesday, January 27. He said community leaders must also contribute their quota in ensuring the safety of all and sundry in their environment by exposing all criminal elements.

He said “The Local Government Councils in Ikorodu must occupy the front line in combating crimes in the area. Their constitutional responsibilities cannot be jettisoned in the fight against cultism and crimes in general. The traditional institution in the division must be up and doing in condemning the activities of the bad boys (cultists), instead of supporting and celebrating them and their criminal acts. The members of the public, especially landlords must key into this fight against insecurity in Ikorodu by screening those to be accommodated or harboured in their houses. The traditionalists and traditional worshippers in this area must stop promoting and protecting the criminals in Ikorodu axis and Lagos State in general. The ideas of fortifying the bad boys and providing native charms for them are counterproductive to our security architecture in this area. Their powers must be used to assist us not to jeopardise our efforts. The religious bodies must use all their platforms, links and ideological perspectives to promote peace and security in the state and Nigeria at large. The idea of preaching prosperity at the detriment of salvation is counterproductive to the security of lives and properties in our contemporary society.”

The Commissioner for Police in Lagos State, Hakeem Odumosu, has said that operatives of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad in the state no longer have the authority to unilaterally detain suspects.

Speaking on Channels TV on Tuesday morning October 6, Odumosu said the recent directive by the IGP banning some of the actions of SARS officers, will be more effective than earlier directives issued to curtail the excesses of SARS operatives.

He said “It is going to be different because there will be more monitoring and more supervision. The additional directive I gave yesterday Monday, October 5 is that they must not even go to investigate any case without booking their arrival at the Area Commander’s office so that the Area Commander will know that they are in that area doing what they ought to do. And once they finish, they must go back and file entry. Secondly, I gave a directive that they must not detain anybody in their cells any longer. They can only detain at my office or at the Area Commander’s office. And the Area Commander must interview any suspect they want to detain and ascertain that the suspect had done what warranted being detained. All these are additional measures put in to make sure that the supervision is effective. So, there is more supervision now and it going to be more effective now.”
