The Nigerian Bar Association Section on Public Interest and Development Law has urged the court to sack the Minister of Art, Culture and Creative Economy, Hannatu Musawa, from office for allegedly violating the National Youth Service Corps Act.

The organisation also asked the court to compel the NYSC to nullify the certificates given to Musawa and a music promoter, Kenny Ogungbe, alleging that the issuance of the certificate was contrary to the provisions of NYSC Act Cap N84.LFN 2024.

The plaintiffs in the suit marked FCH/ABJ/05/90/2024 are the Chairman, NBA-SPIDEL, John Aikpokpo-Martins, and Secretary, NBA-SPIDEL, Funmi Adeogun.

Musawa, Ogungbe, NYSC, and the Federal Government of Nigeria are the first to fourth defendants, respectively in the suit.

The plaintiffs alleged that the mobilisation of Musawa and Ogungbe for the mandatory one-year national youth service after exceeding 30 years of age was unlawful, illegal, and an affront to patriotism.

They also alleged that Musawa and  Ogungbe’s purported national service and the certificates of service purportedly issued by the NYSC were null and void.

The plaintiffs are seeking a declaration that, “By virtue of the provisions of Sections 2(1), 12(1), and 13(1) of the National Youth Service Corps Act, Cap. N84 LFN 2004, the 1st and 2nd defendants are not entitled to be engaged as employees by any employer of labour or services (including the Federal Government of Nigeria) without first possessing and presenting their certificates of National Youth Service.

“A declaration that the 1st defendant is not entitled to continue to hold the exalted office of Honourable Minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria or any public office in Nigeria after violently violating with flagrant impunity the provisions of Sections 2(1), 12(1), and 13(1) of the National Youth Service Corps Act, Cap. N84, LFN 2004.”

The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria had accused Musawa in August 2023 of serving as a minister while undertaking the one-year mandatory National Youth Service Corps scheme.

Similarly, in October 2023, there was a stir on social media when Ogungbe shared a photo of himself in the NYSC uniform, announcing that he had finished NYSC at the age of 53.

The Minister of Arts, Culture and Creative Economy, Hannatu Musawa, has revealed that plans are underway to reposition the video game animation industry in Nigeria.

Musawa disclosed this during the third quarter edition of the Xbox Developer Hangout, organised by Microsoft, in Lagos.

According to her, this will be done in such a way that Nigerian movies, music, fashion and culture will feature in every locally produced video game.

She said the industry holds lots of employment potential for the youth, adding that consultations with Microsoft would help in the actualisation of her vision in that respect.

She said that a working document had already been developed to actualise the mission but needed input from Microsoft.

“We want to look at the kind of innovation we can achieve through gaming, with the huge talent we have in the sector. I want the gaming space transformed and I know with collaborations we can achieve a lot.

“I promise to support in whatever capacity to actualise this and this is the reason I will continually remain grateful to President Bola Tinubu for creating the Ministry of Arts, Culture and Creative Economy.

“I perceive Nigerians as the most creative beings who will transform the gaming industry, the billion-dollar industry, with help and support from the government.

“We want to see a situation where our indigenous movies, peculiar fashion sense, music and elements of our culture will serve as contents of our locally produced video games,” she said.

Earlier, Olatomiwa Williams, Country Manager, Microsoft, noted that the organisation was committed to empowering everyone with the needed tools to grow in the industry.

Williams said it was important to leverage all opportunities to achieve President Tinubu’s agenda for economic diversification.

Partnering with the Federal Government is a thing of delight for us, young Nigerians deserve every right to thrive, and we are creating an inclusive industry also for women to thrive.

“Microsoft has been in existence for over 20 years and I can say that Nigerians have been contributing to our solution areas,” she said.

Also, Oluseye Soyode-Johnson, Founder, of NuConti, said, “The videogame industry is larger than the Nollywood and the global music industry, it is a billion-dollar industry which should be taken seriously.”

Speaking on the needed tools for video games, Matthew Isikhuemen of  Unreal Engine,  said they included epic mega grants, epic game education, epic unreal fellowship, unreal marketplace, epic games store, and twin motion among others.

Winston Ohunyon, Creative Director, Dimension II Games noted that infusing culture into video games could be achieved through storytelling which entailed description and expanding beyond traditional elements.

“The tools for this description can be seen in the plot, setting, theme, characterisation, composition, dialogue, story and all.

“We must be careful about how the stories are relayed to protect our identity as a nation or a continent,” he said.

Also, Dooshima Anger, Founder of Dooshimagames, noted that to fully support inclusivity in the video game industry in Nigeria, more collaborations and awareness must created.

Bolaji Akingbade, Chief Executive Officer of Kucheza, said,  “I can see a lot more parallel industry when we talk of women representation in the video game industry.

“We need more intervention in the early Secondary School levels to influence active participation.’

Nigeria’s entertainment industry is set to receive a boost with the recent appointment of Hannatu Musawa as the Special Adviser on Culture and Entertainment Economy to President Bola Tinubu.

Musawa, who is a daughter of the late Katsina politician, Musa Musawa, is a lawyer, politician and author.

She studied Law at the University of Buckingham, United Kingdom; and has Master’s degrees in the Legal Aspects of Marine Affairs from the University of Cardiff, Wales; and Oil and Gas Law from the University of Aberdeen, Scotland.

She is also a qualified solicitor in England and Wales, UK; and a member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators.

With her vast work experience in Nigeria and the UK, Musawa has established herself as a respected legal practitioner. She has worked with different firms, and is the Principal Partner of her own legal firm, Hanney Musawa and Associates.

Aside from her professional achievements, Musawa is also known for her social nature and family values. She enjoys going out in style and often shares her outings on social media. A family-oriented woman, she usually celebrates the achievements of her loved ones at every opportunity she gets. Last Sunday, she wished her late father a ‘Happy Father’s Day’ on social media.

Meanwhile, stakeholders in the entertainment industry have high expectations from Musawa, as regards improving the country’s entertainment scene.

On Friday, the President of the Theatre Arts and Motion Pictures Practitioners Association of Nigeria, Bolaji Amusan, aka Mr Latin, commended President Bola Tinubu for Musawa’s appointment. He said, “I commend President Tinubu for this. It is a new beginning for the industry and a sign that the present administration is ready to work in the industry. Entertainment was not given priority attention before now. We hope the office will function well, and meet the expectations of practitioners, who have always been the sole drivers of the industry.”
