A 33-year-old man living in Hong Kong has been reinfected with Covid-19 for the second time this year, according to preliminary research.

He is the “first case” documented getting coronavirus twice.

He had symptoms the first time, but no obvious symptoms the second time, the team at the University of Hong Kong reported Monday.

The pre-print study – which the University of Hong Kong said has been accepted for publication in the journal Clinical Infectious Diseases – found that the man’s second case of Covid-19 occurred 142 days after the first.

During his first episode of illness, the patient had a cough, sore throat, fever and headache for three days, according to the study. He tested positive for Covid-19 on March 26.

Then during his second episode, the patient was returning to Hong Kong from travelling in Spain via the United Kingdom, and he tested positive during his entry screening at the Hong Kong airport on August 15, the researchers said. The man was hospitalized again but remained asymptomatic, CNN reports.

“The patient got re-infected 4.5 months after the first infection. Therefore, it shows that for this patient, the immunity induced by the first infection is short-lasting,” Dr Kelvin Kai-Wang To of the University of Hong Kong, who worked on the study, said in an email to CNN.

Hong Kong police have frozen nearly $10 million belonging to a group raising funds on behalf of pro-democracy protesters.

Police also arrested four members of the group, Spark Alliance, on money laundering charges, according to reports.

Spark Alliance accused the police of “smears” in a Facebook post, the Guardian reported. The freeze and arrests were announced Thursday.

The paper quoted police as alleging that some of the donations were used by the fund’s owners for other investments.

“We found the donated money was transferred to a shell company and a significant portion of this money was invested in personal insurance products,” Police Superintendent Chan Wai-kei said, according to the paper. “The beneficiary of these products is the person in charge of the shell company.”

Hundreds of anti-government activists gathered outside a Hong Kong detention center Friday demanding the release of the arrested Spark Alliance members and denouncing the funds’ freeze, Reuters reported.

Spark Alliance was launched in 2016 to support protesters on a number of fronts including legal fees, according to the news outlet.

Chan said suspicions were raised after officers monitored large cash deposits being made on behalf of a shell company, as well as the purchasing of insurance policies. He said the deposits were “incommensurate with (the company’s) business nature,” while the money used to buy the insurance far exceeded the purchaser’s personal income.

“Based on these money laundering hallmarks, we made arrests today,” Chan said.

More than 6,100 people have been arrested in relation to the mass demonstrations that began in June in response to proposed legislation that would have allowed Hong Kong residents to be tried in mainland China.

China announced Monday that it will suspend U.S. Navy visits to Hong Kong in retaliation over President Trump’s decision to sign legislation that supported the city’s pro-democracy protesters who have taken to the streets since June.

Beijing took its first step to make good on its promise to employ “countermeasures” against the U.S. in light of the bills that it blasted as “hegemonic” in nature and ignorant of the facts on the ground.

The Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act, which was sponsored by Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., requires that the U.S. conducts yearly reviews into Hong Kong’s autonomy from Beijing. If ever found unsatisfactory, the city’s special status for U.S. trading could be tossed.

“I signed these bills out of respect for President Xi, China, and the people of Hong Kong,” Trump said in a statement. “They are being enacted in the hope that Leaders and Representatives of China and Hong Kong will be able to amicably settle their differences leading to long term peace and prosperity for all.”

China also announced on Monday that it sanctioned Human Rights Watch for its support of the violence in the city, Hua Chunying, a ministry spokesman, told Reuters.

Hong Kong police on Monday stormed Polytechnic University where anti-government protesters have hunkered down for days amid violent clashes with police.

Fiery explosions could be seen inside the university as riot officers entered before dawn Monday.

Police fired tear-gas barrages late Sunday at protesters outside the campus after an ultimatum to come out expired. The police had surrounded the university to prevent protesters from escaping as they moved in.

The protesters, numbering around 200 people, had assembled an arsenal of petrol bombs and bows and arrows to resist.

An officer from the media liaison team was stuck in the leg by an arrow around 2 p.m. and taken to police headquarters.

The protesters had also set fires on bridges leading to the university to keep police from advancing on their campus stronghold.

Orange flames extended the length of a footbridge over the roadway entrance to the Cross-Harbour tunnel.

Earlier Sunday, police had shut down access to the area and massed to surround the protesters, prompting some to retreat inside the campus while others remained outside to deter any advance.

Another fire was set on a bridge over the toll booths for the tunnel. Protesters have blocked access to the tunnel for days and set fires in the toll booths.

Although Morey quickly deleted the tweet, sportswear brand Li-Ning and Rockets sponsor Shanghai Pudong Development Bank (SPD Bank) Credit Card Center announced on Sunday they were suspending ties with the team.

The since-deleted tweet by Morey read: “Fight for Freedom. Stand with Hong Kong.”

“We want to express our indignation and strong condemnation,” Li-Ning stated on Weibo. “We have already stopped our cooperation with the Houston Rockets, and continue to urge them to give a clear answer on this matter.”

SPD Bank also announced it was suspending related marketing activities with the team.

“SPD Bank Credit Card Center expresses strong protest and opposition to the wrong remarks made by Houston Rockets’ General Manager Daryl Morey,” the bank said in a statement.

The Houston Rockets have a strong following in China thanks to the most famous Chinese basketball player of all time, Yao Ming, who the team drafted in 2002. Chinese fans followed his entire Hall of Fame career with the Rockets, making it a sensitive issue for both parties.

Protests in Hong Kong have made worldwide news over the past couple of months thanks to increased violence between the government and those fighting for increased rights and freedom. China appears extremely sensitive to outside parties encouraging the demonstrators, especially within a group they have strong ties to.

Rockets owner Tilman Fertitta denounced Morey’s tweet, saying the Rockets are not a political organization.

“Our presence in Tokyo is all about the promotion of the @NBA internationally and we are NOT a political organization,” he said.

“I have the best general manager in the league,” Fertitta told ESPN’s Tim MacMahon. “Everything is fine with Daryl and me. We got a huge backlash, and I wanted to make clear that the organization has no political position. We’re here to play basketball and not to offend anybody.”

China has expressed a total condemnation of protesters who stormed the Hong Kong’s legislature on Monday, saying that the acts “trample on the rule of law” and are “totally intolerable.”

Geng Shuang, foreign Ministry spokesman said that Beijing totally condemned the protesters who broke through the glass and steel barriers and went into the building where they unlawfully vandalized it.

He said that the Chinese government supports Hong Kong’s government and its police force in dealing with the incident in accordance with law.

“The violent attacks … are serious illegal acts that trample on the rule of law and endanger social order. We strongly condemn it,” Geng said.

A group of protesters broke through a window and stormed into Hong Kong’s legislative building amid another episode of mass demonstrations in the city, where a commemoration of the 22nd anniversary of the orderly return to Chinese rule was taken over by tumultuous scenes of utter civil disobedience, destruction and the deployment of tear gas.

The crowd, which comprised mostly of young protesters, could be clearly seen on video using a cargo cart and large poles as battering rams against the glass panel of the legislative building. The demonstrators then broke part of a glass and metal wall of the government building, carrying away the long strips of metal framework.

The Chinese government’s liaison office in Hong Kong, meanwhile, released a statement through the state-run Xinhua news agency, slamming the protesters as well, the Guardian reported.

The office said it was “shocked, indignant and strongly condemned” the siege of the government building that came following the massive protests over a controversial extradition bill concerning China.

“Some extreme elements used excessive violence to storm the legislature building and carried out a series of large-scale assaults. This is shocking, heart-breaking and angering,” the statement said.

“Their violent acts are an extreme challenge to Hong Kong’s rule of law and seriously undermined Hong Kong’s peace and stability. It is totally intolerable.”

Hong Kong’s government put on a deaf ear towards a Thursday deadline imposed by protesters to scrap controversial extradition legislation, setting the stage for additional protests this weekend.

The number of protesters right outside the Legislative Council, which had severely dwindled since a massive march last Sunday, began picking up again on Thursday afternoon. With no reply from the government, protests were set to begin on Friday morning and many people looked prepared to stay the night at the central government complex.

The government announced that the complex would be closed on Friday “due to security considerations.”

The extradition bill which was pushed by Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam would allow suspected criminals apprehended in Hong Kong to be extradited to mainland China for trial. Critics say that the bill puts critics of China’s ruling Communist Party at risk of torture and unfair trials in the mainland and further chips away at the “one country, two systems” framework under which Hong Kong has been governed since 1997.

Under the terms of the British handover, Hong Kong is guaranteed the right to retain its own legal, economic and political system until 2047, however, the Chinese Communist Party under President Xi Jinping has been pushing ever-more aggressively to quiet independent voices in Hong Kong. Beijing has squelched all reporting on the protests in mainland media and accused foreign forces of stirring up disturbances in Hong Kong.

2 million people on estimate took part in Sunday’s march on government headquarters, which constituted the largest protest the semi-autonomous territory has seen in years.

Hong Kong is looking another massive protest over a sparsely known extradition bill, one week after the crisis brought as many as 1 million into the streets.

Carrie Lam, Hong Kong Chief Executive on Saturday said that she was suspending work on the bill that would allow some suspects to be sent for trial in mainland Chinese courts.

However, pro-democracy activists say that it is not enough. They want the proposal withdrawn and are calling for Lam to step down.

In Beijing, the communist government issued statements fully supporting Lam’s decision.

Mourners meanwhile laid flowers on Sunday on the pavement near where a man fell to his death a day earlier after hanging a protest banner on scaffolding on a shopping mall.

Emergency workers tried to cushion the man’s fall but failed to catch him.
