Indiana police are investigating after a pedestrian walking a dog on Tuesday afternoon found an infant – still alive – inside a plastic bag along a road.

Officers with the Seymour Police Department were dispatched to the 600 block of South Jackson Park Drive at around 4 p.m. after someone walking a dog noticed the baby just 20 yards from a road in Seymour’s southeast side, FOX59 reported.

The baby was transported to Schneck Medical Center, just over 60 miles south of Indianapolis, where medical staff determined the infant was not only alive but healthy.

Authorities did not reveal the gender or age of the infant, but reminded residents that the city opened its first Safe Haven Baby Box at the Seymour Fire Station 3 on 605 Meadowbrook Drive in June.

The organization was founded by Monica Kelsey, who was abandoned as an infant herself, and provides struggling mothers with a safe and anonymous alternative.

“Baby Boxes are placed in Safe Haven locations and allow a woman to surrender her unwanted newborn under the Safe Haven Law by placing her newborn in an electronically monitored Safe Haven Baby Box,” the group writes on its Facebook page.

“These newborns will be picked up within 3-5 minutes by medical and fire personnel. The Baby Boxes have 3 alarms that activate and a heating and cooling unit in them for extreme weather.”

According to the group, seven infants have been recovered using the boxes this year, noting that this is the state’s first abandonment in almost four years.

Detective Sgt. C.J. Foster with the Seymour Police Department said in a statement that no arrests have been made but police continue to investigate.

An Indiana man who told police he didn’t believe their cruisers would catch his 2002 Acura was arrested after leading officers on a 140-mph chase on Thursday morning.

Dino Lorenzo Gagliano, 20, of Dyer, Indiana, was reportedly clocked going at least 116 miles per hour by trooper William Carlson who was sitting on the shoulder of Interstates 80/94 in Indiana around 2:30 a.m. in Lake County, Ind. The speed limit in that area was 55 miles per hour.

The 2002 Acura increased in speed as the officer pulled out to catch up with Gagliano, eventually reaching 140 miles per hour as the car weaved in and out of traffic, passing cars on the outside shoulder on multiple occasions, according to Indiana State Police.

The driver was finally taken into custody as his car stopped at the 13.5-mile marker. No one was reportedly injured during the chase as traffic was light, authorities said.

Gagliano was charged with resisting law enforcement, reckless driving, driving with a suspended license, speeding, unsafe land movement and failure to signal lane changes.

After his arrest, Gagliano stated he was worried about his license, which happened to be suspended and was surprised when Carlson caught up with him so quickly. He believed Indiana State Police cruisers only had V6 engines when they are actually equipped with a V8 Hemi.

Gagliano was taken to Lake County Jail in Crown Point and booked on the various charges.

A missing 16-year-old Indiana girl has been found safe Sunday in Arkansas with the assistance of the FBI, an Indiana sheriff said.

Lake County Sheriff Oscar Martinez reported that Madison Eddlemon had been located, the Times of Northwest Indiana reported.

“This positive could only have been possible through the mutual cooperation of both state and federal agencies,” Martinez said, according to the paper.

Madison was believed to be in “extreme danger,” possibly abducted by a man who has been accusing of stalking her, according to police.

Alexander Martin Curry-Fishtorn, 22, was also located and taken into custody, the paper reported. Martinez said he faces numerous charges.

Madison disappeared Saturday morning in Crown Point, Ind., a city roughly 50 miles southeast of Chicago, according to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. Her family last spoke to her the night before.

Her car was later found abandoned, with a window cracked open and “some of her belongings” inside, the Crown Point Police Department said.

Her family believed she was with Curry-Fishtorn, of St. John, who had an order of protection filed against him for stalking Eddlemon, according to investigators.

A Holocaust survivor, Eva Kor, who founded the CANDLES Holocaust Museum and Educational Center in Indiana, passed on very peacefully on Thursday during her annual trip to Poland. She was 85 years old.

Kor, a Jewish native of Romania, was sent to the infamous Auschwitz concentration camp in 1944, where most of her family was killed.

Kor and her twin sister, Miriam Mozes Zeiger, survived but were subjected to terrible medical experiments by Nazi doctor Josef Mengele before they were rescued in 1945.

ZeigerlLoss her life in June 1993.

A longtime resident of Terre Haute, Indiana, Kor always talked about forgiveness, even to the Nazis who brutally tortured her and her sister.

She spent the past 40 years sharing her story with students, teachers, doctors, senators, historians and civic groups both nationally and internationally.

In 1995, Kor launched the CANDLES museum to prevent prejudice and hatred through education about the Holocaust. In 2003, the museum was destroyed by an arsonist. Kor vowed to rebuild and, with the public’s help, reopened the museum in 2005.

“Eva Kor has touched hundreds of thousands of people over her 85 years through her message of overcoming tragedy, finding forgiveness, and healing,” the CANDLES museum said in a statement. “We hope Eva’s story continues to change the lives of those who hear it for many years to come.”

Museum officials said the center will be closed until Tuesday in honor of Kor’s memory.

In 2017, Indiana Gov. Eric Holcomb awarded Kor the Sachem Award, the state’s highest honor.

Holcomb tweeted Thursday that “the world just lost a giant.”

“Everywhere she went, Eva brought light into darkness & provided comfort to those in pain, unlike anyone we’ve ever met. From her against all odds survival as a young girl in Auschwitz to her peace-spreading message based from home in Terre Haute, Indiana, her relentless and optimistic example inspired the world. Her angelic spirit will live on in the countless souls she saved from ongoing confusion and torment,” Holcomb tweeted.
