A video that went viral last weekend showed two Indonesian Immigration officers manhandling an accredited Nigerian diplomat, Mohammed Buba. While two of the officials held his hands and pinned him down in the backseat, another freely assaulted his unprotected head as he cried out in pain.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffery Onyeama, while reacting to the development, demanded an unreserved apology for the Indonesian government and also threatened that Nigeria would review its relationship with the country. The Federal government also announced the recall of the Nigerian Ambassador to Indonesia.

Apologising on behalf of his country, the spokesperson of the Indonesian Foreign Ministry, Teuku Faizasyah, said “The Ministry of Foreign Affairs regrets the incident on August 7th. This is an isolated incident, and is in no way related to the commitment of the Indonesian government in carrying out its obligations as host country or in accordance with the Vienna Convention on diplomatic relations.”

The government stated this following a trending video showing the unnamed Nigerian diplomat being attacked by Indonesian officials in Jakarta. He was pinned down in a car and he could be heard shouting, ‘I can’t breathe.’

The FG had on Monday summoned the Indonesian ambassador in Nigeria, Dr Usra Harahap, who apologized on behalf of the Government of Indonesia.

But speaking on the development at a briefing in Abuja on Tuesday, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffry Onyeama, said the FG had received a full report of the incident, noting that the government condemned the assault on the diplomat by the Indonesian agents.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has received a comprehensive report from the Nigerian ambassador in Indonesia on the manhandling and arrest of a Nigerian diplomat.

“The MFA had previously summoned the Indonesian ambassador to the ministry to express outrage and to protest strongly.

“After studying the report of the Nigerian ambassador, the Nigerian Government condemns in the strongest terms what is in effect an egregious act of international delinquency by Indonesian state actors against an accredited representative of the Federal Republic of Nigeria with absolutely no justification and against international law.”

The ministry reaffirmed its “resolve to protect the interest of Nigeria and Nigerians wherever they are in the world, and calls for calm as consultations continue,” he said.

The snake, which is said to have the ability to eat up a human, was first seen near Lovell Road in Cambridge on Sunday. Cambridgeshire Police said that they have tracked down the python’s owner, but have yet to locate the reptile.

The department tweeted on Sunday: “In the early hours of this morning, Officers attended the area of Lovell Rd Cambridge. Reports of a three meter snake seen in the area.”

“Police have located the owner but not the Reticulated Python confirmed to be 9ft long. Any sighting please notify Cambs Police on 101,” Cambridgeshire Police wrote.

Reticulated pythons are known as the world’s longest snake, growing up to 31.5 feet long, according to Encyclopedia Britannica. The species is native to Southeast Asia and is non-venomous. A python is a constrictor and kills its prey by coiling around it and squeezing.

While attacks on humans are rare, there have been reports of pythons eating humans in Indonesia in recent years.

The body of a 54-year-old woman was found inside a 23-foot long python in Indonesia last year. The woman had gone missing while in her garden, according to the BBC.

A year earlier, the body of a 25-year-old man was cut out of another 23-foot long python, the outlet reported.
