The Lagos police command says its operatives have arrested a man named Lekan Olanrewaju for allegedly vandalising one of the electronic road signs installed on the Five Star Bridge in Oshodi.

In a post on its X page on Monday, Nov. 18, the command said men of the rapid response squad (RRS) arrested the suspect last Wednesday, Nov. 13, while he was removing the battery cables of the electronic sign.

“Operatives of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) arrested a man last Wednesday for vandalising one of the electronic road signs installed on Five Star Bridge, Oshodi, to caution road users to slow down,” the post reads.

“The suspect, Lekan Olanrewaju, 30 years old, was arrested around 2:00 a.m. while removing the battery cables of the electronic sign.

“Vandals had a week before stolen the battery of one of the two road signs installed at the inward Apapa end of the bridge to caution motorists.”

The police said the suspect’s arrest came after Shola Jejeloye, the RRS commander, deployed a patrol team to combat traffic robbery and safeguard public infrastructure.

The command said operatives recovered cables and pliers from the suspects, adding that he has been charged and sentenced to one and a half years in prison.

Three brothers, Kamal Iyanda, Waheed Iyanda, and Omololu Iyanda, have accused officers of the Lagos State Police Command of extorting N63,000 from them.

One of the brothers, Kamal, said that the police officers enforcing the Okada ban in the Aguda area of Surulere allegedly made them pay the amount after they were detained for hours in the cell at Soloki Station in Aguda where they were taken to.

Kamal said the incident happened last Wednesday while their car broke down and they needed to board the bike.

Narrating, Kamal said, “We were three. We got arrested around 4 pm. They granted us bail around 10 pm. We were put in the cell. Our car broke down, so we took it to the mechanic. We went to eat at Pako, and when we were returning, we were so tired and decided to take a bike. The bike man said he could take the three of us, so we (boarded) the bike.”

Kamal said after some distance, a guy whistled at the bike man and he was going to wait, but they had to tell him not to wait since he would not be able to carry any other passenger with the three of them.

“But he (the bike man) said he knew them and wanted to settle them. When he stopped, those guys came to meet us, (we realised) they were policemen and they arrested us. Before we got to the place (police station), they said we should pay N100,000. We said we had just N10,000 to pay. They said no. They said they would take us to the station. We thought it was a joke, and when they took us to the station, they said they wanted N200,000,” he said.

Kamal added that the policemen began negotiating the amount with their sister who later arrived at the station when she was called.

She paid N60,000 and another N3,000. She paid cash. They (the policemen) said they didn’t want a transfer payment but cash.”

Speaking with our correspondent, the sister, Rafiat, said, “When I got there, they said they caught the three of them on a bike. I asked why they arrested the passengers alongside the Okada man, they said that’s the law: to arrest the passenger and the Okada man.”

Rafiat said when she asked them what was next and that she wanted to bail them, “The officers said I should go and bring N150,000 and that they were only helping me, if not, they would take them to court. I was begging them that I didn’t have N150,000. They pushed me outside when I said I had just N20,000. They embarrassed me and seized my phone.”

She said they eventually accepted N60,000 from her, but she later paid another N3,000 at the counter.

“When I asked for an account number, they said they don’t take transfers and that I should withdraw it from the Point of Sale machine.”

A resident in the area, who gave his name simply as Taofeek, said when he heard of the incident, he put a call across to the Aguda Divisional Police Officer, Oriloye Shederack, who maintained that Okada had been banned in the area.

Taofeek said, “I then asked him, ‘Was that why they have extorted the sum of N63,000?’ He had nothing to say to that, instead, he insisted I come to his office.”

The DPO, Oriloye,  also said, “Somebody called me a few days ago and I asked them to come to the station.”

“There are so many people who were detained at the station. If there’s anything, come to the DPO and find out, they will check, and they will be identified. Let the person come to me, I will investigate. I won’t condone indiscipline. Let the victim come and identify the person who collected money from him,” the DPO insisted.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, when contacted, asked to be sent a text message. He has yet to respond to the text and other calls made to his line on Saturday and Sunday.

The state government had in 2022 extended the ban on Okada to four more Local Government Areas and five Local Council Development Areas.

The state Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, had directed full enforcement from September 1, 2022. This followed the February 2020 restriction placed on the activities of commercial motorcycles in six LGAS including Ikeja, Surulere, Eti-Osa, Lagos Mainland, Lagos Island, and Apapa.

The additional councils where the total Okada ban was pronounced included Kosofe Local Government, Oshodi-Isolo Local Government, Somolu Local Government, and Mushin Local Government.

Others are Ikosi-Isherri LCDA, Agboyi-Ketu LCDA, Isolo LCDA, Bariga LCDA, and Odi-Olowo LCDA.

The Lagos State Police Command, on Wednesday, declared a singer, Owodunni Ibrahim, alias Prime Boy, wanted for shunning an invitation to assist in the probe of the circumstances leading to the death of  27-year-old musician, Ilerioluwa Aloba, alias Mohbad, who died in controversial circumstances.

The police command declared Prime Boy wanted in a statement on Wednesday by its spokesman, Benjamin Hundeyin.

Hundeyin said the police had placed N1m bounty on Prime Boy, described as a “male, approximately 1.64-m tall, complexioned with tribal marks and Yoruba by tribe.”

“If seen, contact the nearest police station or call 0803 688 5727. CP Idowu Owohunwa hereby offers a handsome reward of N1,000,000 to anyone with useful information leading to his arrest,” Hundeyin noted.

Meanwhile, a Lagos State Magistrates’ Court in Yaba, on Wednesday, granted the police an order to detain controversial musician, Azeez Fashola, popularly known as Naira Marley, in their custody for 21 days.

The late Mohbad was formally signed to Naira Marley’s Malian record label but they fell out. The deceased had alleged intimidation by Naira Marley and his associates.

The court also ordered the police to remand for 21 days a Lagos socialite, Balogun Eletu, also known as Sam Larry; a nurse alleged to have injected the late singer, Fisayo Ogedengbe, and another fellow, Sadiq Ayobami,  who claimed to be the late singer’s friend.

The four defendants were remanded at the State Criminal Investigation Department, Panti, pending the completion of the police investigation.

Naira Marley had on Tuesday turned himself in to the police, after which he was detained.

On Wednesday, the police approached the magistrates’ court with a remand application requesting that Naira Marley and the three other defendants be remanded for 30 days.

However, the magistrate, Olatunbosun granted the police 21 days to complete their investigation.

Olatunbosun however, granted the defendants access to medicals and lawyers of their choice.

The case was adjourned till October 25, for the report of the police investigation.

Also at the plenary on Wednesday in Abuja, the House of Representatives assured the family of late Mohbad, of its commitment to secure proper compensation and royalties from his music works.

The Chairman of the House Committee on Justice, Olumide Osoba, representing the Abeokuta North/Odeda/Obafemi-Owode Federal Constituency of Ogun State, stated this during an interactive session on the rights and royalties of the deceased rapper who passed on September 12.

The resolution followed a motion of urgent public importance earlier moved by Babajimi Benson, the lawmaker representing Ikorodu Federal Constituency, Lagos State.

“It is crucial to recognise that young musicians are often not well-informed about their rights when entering into contracts,” he said.

Three suspected members of the Klansman Confraternity have been arrested by men of the Lagos State Police Command for allegedly shooting a member of the Eiye Confraternity, Akinola Ayegbusi, to death at a restaurant in the Alapere area of the state.

normal activities were ongoing when the suspects, who were said to be on a revenge mission, trailed Ayegbusi to the front of the restaurant.

After spotting him, the suspects, who were armed with guns and cutlasses, allegedly shot Ayegbusi. In a bid to escape, the victim ran into the restaurant.

Thereafter, the suspects, numbering six, were seen in a video clip captured by the Closed-Circuit Television installed on the premises of the restaurant, shooting and using cutlasses to hack Ayegbusi till he died.

The attack threw the security guard, workers and customers, who came to patronise the restaurant into panic as they were seen in the video clip, running helter-skelter to escape from the crime scene.

The suspects left the premises of the restaurant after perpetrating the crime.

A source, who spoke to our correspondent on Tuesday, said residents in the area alerted the police after the suspects fled from the crime scene.

The policemen from the Alapere Division quickly mobilised to the restaurant. They evacuated the corpse and commenced investigation,” the source said.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, in a statement on Tuesday, identified three of the suspects as Jamiu Rasheed, Emmanuel Samson, and Sheriff Module.

He said efforts were on to arrest other fleeing members connected to the crime, adding that the suspects would be arraigned at the conclusion of the investigation.

Hundeyin said, “Operatives of the Lagos State Police Command have arrested a suspected cultist, Jamiu Rasheed, 22, who was captured on CCTV on July 7, 2022, hacking and shooting to death, one Akinola Ayegbusi, a rival cult member at a restaurant in the Alapere area of Lagos State.

“Investigations revealed that Jamiu has been a member of Klansman Confraternity since 2017 and has participated in the killing of two other rival cultists. Investigation into the crime also led to the arrest of the armourer of the group, one Sheriff Module, 26, who was found with two locally-made pistols; and one other cultist, Emmanuel Samson.

“Sheriff who was also part of the killing confessed that it was carried out to avenge the death of their leader who was killed by the Eiye Confraternity on November 23, 2021. Efforts are ongoing to arrest other fleeing cultists. Suspects will be arraigned at the conclusion of investigations.”

Hundeyin said the state Commissioner of Police, Abiodun Alabi, called on parents and guardians, as well as traditional, religious, and political leaders to prevail on their children and wards, and the teeming youth population to stay away from cultism and other social vices.

Cult-related attacks and killings had been ongoing for a while in the Alapere area of the state.

rampaging cultists allegedly killed a father of three, identified only as Oluwole; a man, identified simply as Labalaba, and a yet-to-be-identified tricycle operator, in the Agboyi area of Alapare.

Landlords, residents and business owners in the area had been calling on the Lagos State Police Command to mobilise policemen to restore normalcy in the community.
