The management of Rosebud School in Idimu, Lagos, has expelled three students after their father, Ayofe Kolawole, assaulted a teacher, Elizabeth Ogri, and a sanitary worker, Agnes Paul, on October 10, 2024.

The school’s Public Relations Officer, Vivian Shonekan, confirmed the expulsion, following a viral video of the 44-year-old Kolawole attacking the two women inside a classroom.

The shocking footage shows Kolawole physically assaulting Paul, while Ogri, fearing for her own safety, began filming the incident. Upon realizing he was being recorded, Kolawole turned his aggression toward Ogri, attempting to stop her from documenting the attack.

Shonekan explained that although Kolawole’s family later returned to apologize and seek a settlement, the school remained firm in its decision to expel his children. “There was no issue with settling, but the school firmly decided that their three children could not return,” she stated.

Agnes Paul, a mother of four, recounted the traumatic experience, revealing she is still suffering from injuries sustained during the attack. “I’ve been coughing at night and experiencing chest pain. The school has been covering my hospital bills, but I need further tests,” Paul shared.

The incident reportedly stemmed from a misunderstanding two days earlier when one of Kolawole’s children complained of feeling unwell. Ogri, the boy’s teacher, explained that she had administered first aid by closing windows and turning off the fan to help him feel better. However, Kolawole later accused Ogri of attempting to initiate his child with a “black substance” — a misunderstanding about kernel oil Ogri had applied to treat a whitlow on her fingernail.

Despite Ogri’s explanation, Kolawole demanded she sign an undertaking that the oil was not fetish. Ogri initially refused but later signed under pressure. The situation escalated into the violent confrontation captured in the viral video.

Kolawole was arrested and arraigned in court on Tuesday, October 22, according to Lagos State Police Command spokesperson Benjamin Hundeyin, who confirmed the charges of physical assault against him.

The Lagos State Government has officially partnered with China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC) through a Memorandum of Understanding to advance the Green Line Rail mass transit project.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu announced this development on Thursday, highlighting the significance of the project.

In a statement shared on X.com, Sanwo-Olu expressed enthusiasm about the new metro line, saying, “Lagos, yet another Metro line? Absolutely! The Green Line Metro is here.”

He emphasized that the Green Line will connect key areas such as Victoria Island, Lekki, and Marina, and is expected to carry over 500,000 passengers daily at launch, with capacity projected to exceed one million as demand grows.

State Commissioner for Information & Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, previously mentioned that the state was actively seeking investors for the project.

The Green Line, spanning 68km from the Lekki Free Zone to Marina and linking with the existing Blue Line at Marina, aims to enhance Lagos’ transport infrastructure significantly.

Governor Sanwo-Olu noted that this initiative complements the Red Line, which has already begun partial operations, and is part of a broader Strategic Transport Masterplan designed to provide a fast, efficient, and interconnected transport network across the city.

The Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority has outlined six rail systems in the state’s transport master plan, each identified by distinct colors including the Green, Purple, Yellow, Orange, Blue, and Red lines.

The Lagos State government has initiated a comprehensive campaign against the M-pox virus focusing on the emerging clade 1B variant circulating in Central Africa.

This effort, directed by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, involves key stakeholders including the World Health Organization, the National Institute for Medical Research, and local health institutions.

The Commissioner for Health, Professor Akin Abayomi who announced that the campaign includes the activation of an Emergency Operations Centre and a public health awareness drive said: “We have been given the mandate to protect Lagos from the potential threat of the M-pox clade 1B, a more aggressive strain currently spreading in Central Africa.”

Abayomi emphasized that while Lagos has no active M-pox cases, the state’s dense population and international connections pose a risk of importing the new variant. The campaign will focus on prevention, early detection, and public education to mitigate this threat.

Abayomi highlighted the state’s proactive approach, which has previously been effective against outbreaks like Ebola and COVID-19. “Lagos is preparing, not just for the local M-pox strain, but for the potential introduction of this new variant that could disrupt our economic and social stability,” he added.

The state will continue to monitor the situation closely and adjust its strategies as needed to protect the health and safety of its residents.

The Lagos State Government has announced a 90-day traffic diversion for motorists on the Odo Iya Alaro Bridge, starting Monday, July 22, 2024.

In a statement issued on Thursday, July 18, 2024, Commissioner for Transportation Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi explained that the diversion is necessary due to the deteriorated state of the asphalt pavement and expansion joints on the bridge.

Osiyemi detailed that the diversion will occur in two phases: the Ojota-bound lane and the Yaba/Ojuelegba/Maryland-bound lane. Alternative routes have been mapped out for each phase of the repairs.

The statement read, “For the first phase of the repairs, motorists heading to Ojota from Maryland/Yaba will be diverted into a counter flow on the lane inbound Maryland while motorists heading to Yaba from Ojota will continue their journeys on the same lane.

“Alternately, motorists from Berger, Magodo and Tollgate along Lagos-Ibadan Expressway are advised to go through the Alapere/Ogudu axis inward Gbagada/Anthony Oke Bridge to descend the ramp and access Ikorodu Road to continue their journeys.

“Motorists coming from Ikeja, Oregun and Kudirat Abiola Way are advised to use the Opebi Link Bridge to connect Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way inwards Sheraton through Maryland to access Ikorodu Road and navigate their ways.”

The statement also added that “motorists from Jibowu are advised to use the Ikorodu Road Service lane by Mobil Fuel Station/Bertola Engineering Equipment Company to access the Gbagada/Ogudu axis to continue their journeys.”

However, if the motorists “miss the turning by the Mobil Fuel Station and Bertola Engineering Equipment Company, they can also use Theodolite to link Anthony Oke Ramp and join Ikorodu Road again to access the Town Planning Way inward Gbagada/Ogudu/Alapere axis to proceed with their journeys.”

“Motorists from Jibowu heading to Ikeja, Magodo, Berger and Lagos Ibadan Expressway can use Maryland inwards Mobolaji Bank Anthony to link Sheraton/Opebi to Allen Avenue/Obafemi Awolowo Way and access Nurudeen Olowopopo Road to continue their journeys.

Alternatively, after going through the Opebi Link Bridge, they can also make use of Kudirat Abiola Way to access Ikosi Road inwards Mobolaji Johnson Avenue/7up to connect Nurudeen Olowopopo Road and access their desired destinations,” the statement read.

While explaining the second phase of the repair works, the commissioner noted that “motorists inward Maryland/Yaba from Ojota will be diverted into a counter flow on the lane inbound Ojota while motorists from Maryland will continue their journey on the same lane.”

For the alternative routes, motorists “from Berger, Magodo and Toll Gate can use Alapere inwards Gbagada to link the Anthony Oke Ramp to connect Ikorodu Road and access their desired destinations. Similarly, motorists coming from Ikorodu/ Ketu can utilise the Ojota Ramp Bridge to link Alapere and continue their journeys as explained above.

“Motorists from Ikeja, Oregun and Kudirat Abiola Way are advised to use the Opebi Link Bridge inwards Mobolaji Bank Anthony/Sheraton and come out at Maryland to enter Ikorodu Road and continue their journeys.”

“The aforementioned alternative routes for motorists heading to Ikeja, Magodo, Berger and Lagos-Ibadan Expressway from Jibowu during the first phase are also available during the second phase of the repairs,” the statement explained.

The Commissioner appealed to the public ” to cooperate with the interventions put in place during the repairs” as he assured that traffic management personnel would be on the ground to ensure a steady traffic flow.

The Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Prof Akin Abayomi, on Wednesday said the state health sector needs about 30,000 medical doctors to service residents’ needs.

Abayomi disclosed this at the ongoing 2024 Clean-Air Forum in Lagos.

The commissioner decried the negative effect of brain drain in the health sector, stating that the gap between the available doctor to patient ratio has been overstretched.

He emphasized the importance of getting more medical doctors to cater for the increasing need of medical services in the state.

He said, “Lagos annual population growth rate of six to eight per cent comes with huge challenges and the health sector is not an exception.

“Lagos because of its daily increasing population has a complex tuberculosis index and the state is making a whole lot of impact in this area to mitigate its spread.

“The promotion of air quality and the need to halt environmental pollution in the state is where the collaborative efforts of the agencies are needed.

“As a government, the state will continue to support every effort to sanitise the air in the city in order to reduce rate of air born, water diseases that bear negative on the health of the residents.’’

Speaking on the shortage of bed spaces in state health centres, Abayomi said the state would construct modern facilities in various areas and establish a medical research institution.

The commissioner noted that the development would bridge the doctor to patient gap within 18 months to give the public desired service.

The Lagos State Government has called for calm in response to flash floods caused by torrential rainfall across the state on Wednesday.

Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, addressed the situation in a statement, highlighting that Lagos experienced about nine hours of continuous rainfall since the early hours of Wednesday.

He noted that the persistent heavy rainfall over the past week has led to a significant rise in the level of the Lagos lagoon.

Wahab assured the public that the flash floods, which affected areas such as Iyana-Oworo and other parts of the state, would recede once the rain subsides and the lagoon levels decrease.

He mentioned that officials from the Emergency Flood Abatement Gang had been deployed to major black spots, including Iyana-Oworo, to clear any blockages.

He advised residents in low-lying areas to relocate to higher ground to protect their lives and properties.

Additionally, he warned against wading through flooded areas with vehicles, as even a foot of flowing water with high tide could sweep away a vehicle regardless of the number of occupants
