As a result of the death of a student named Whitney Adeniran, the Lagos State government has mandated that Chrisland School in Opebi, Ikeja, be shut down.

The school will stay closed while a thorough investigation is conducted, according to Folasade Adefisayo, commissioner for education.

The representative offered condolences to the deceased’s family and friends and said a prayer for the soul’s peace.

Adefisayo, however, called for calm, assuring that “no effort will be spared in investigating the incident”.

The father of the late 12-year-old called for an investigation into her death in a statement circulated on social media.

Michael Adeniran said she neither had any health condition nor was she sick when the school bus picked her up for inter-house sports activities last Thursday.

The Lagos State Government through its Fire and Rescue Service has warned the general public, particularly motorists, to desist from indiscriminate storage of Premium Motor Spirit (Petrol) in inappropriate places.

This is as the State has so far recorded 129 emergency calls on fire outbreaks in November, with 17 calls received in a day recently.

The State Fire Chief, Mrs. Margaret Adeseye, who disclosed this noted that since the commencement of the recent fuel scarcity, some people have devised illegal means of storing the product in unsuitable places, such as in vehicles, under staircases at home or within the premises of their working places.

Adeseye, however, stressed that all these have contributed to the increase in the number of fire outbreaks.

Adeseye reiterated that the State Government places a high premium on the safety of lives and properties of the citizenry, therefore, the nonchalant attitude of the general public to the basic principle of safety is of great concern to the present administration as the total number of emergency calls in November is already much higher than the 82 recorded in October 2022.

Her words: “The high figure of 129 fire outbreaks in less than a month is worrisome. However, we are extending our safety enlightenment campaigns to all Local Government Areas, Hospitals, Schools and the grassroots, all in an effort to curb the tide of fire incidents and related emergencies”.

According to her, fuel scarcity is not an excuse for the inappropriate storage of fuel to the detriment of the lives and properties of residents, imploring members of the public to avoid using jerry cans that have been used for petrol to store kerosene and any other flammable liquids. She also advised Motorists, particularly commercial vehicle operators, not to store petrol in the boots of their cars and buses.

She urged landlords and tenants to be observant and prevent inappropriate storage of fuel in and around their homes while enjoining operators of filling stations to stop the practice of dispensing fuel in polythene bags while allowing customers to cluster around petrol dispensing pumps to avoid scuffle that can lead to fire outbreaks.

Adeseye, therefore, urged residents to call the toll-free emergency lines 767 or 112 or the Lagos Fire Service Hotline: 08033235891 to report an outbreak of fire for a prompt response.

The Lagos State Government through its Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Cooperatives (MCIC) has commenced the drive for compliance with the Auction Law Cap. A12 (2015) of the State.

The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Cooperatives, Adetutu Ososanya disclosed this while receiving the leadership of the National Association of Auctioneers (NAA) and Certified Institute of Auctioneers of Nigeria (CIAN) on behalf of the Honourable Commissioner, Hon. Dr. (Mrs) Lola Akande at the Ministry recently.

The Permanent Secretary stated that the drive for compliance has kicked off with the sensitisation of Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) of the State and 57 LGAs/LCDAs, assuring that the exercise will be followed with physical engagements with Accounting Officers of the MDAs and Chairmen of the LGAs/LCDAs.

“The Ministry is already acting on the circular issued by the Office of the Head of Service directing all government establishments to patronise auctioneers registered with the State. I can assure you that your members will soon start getting jobs”, she said.

Ososanya affirmed the readiness to commence physical engagement with the Office of the Head of Service/Public Service Office (OHS/PSO) and the Ministry of Transportation (MOT), both of which are critical to the implementation of the Law while cascading sensitisation and mobilisation to the local councils.

Her words: “Let me assure the leadership of NAA and CIAN of continued government support to ensure only licensed auctioneers are engaged for the exercise in the State”.

The Director of Commerce in the Ministry, Helen Adesina expressed delight at the joint meeting, which was the first between the two bodies, encouraging them to work together and hold regular meetings to foster a stronger bond and harmonious relationship in the interest of the profession.

She reiterated the need for those with expired licenses to renew without delay as that qualifies them to practice.

Speaking earlier, the Chairman of the National Association of Auctioneers (NAA), Chief Babatunde Cole canvassed the need for compliance with the HOS Circular 014 amongst the State and Local Government establishments, noting that the Association has engaged OHS/PSO and the Lagos State House of Assembly for support.

The Registrar, Certified Institute of Auctioneers of Nigeria (CIAN), Mr. Adeleke Hassan, remarked that the Institute is a professional body of auctioneers that promotes professionalism and provides training for practitioners to ensure standardisation in operations.
“The Institute recognises the Association and vice versa as we do not want to end up with two professional bodies. The challenges of the two bodies are identical and we are fighting for the same interest”, he said.

He further requested the Ministry to encourage MDAs to make use of the service of registered practitioners which will be to their benefit as they will get the best value in all transactions.

Pioneer Chairman of CIAN, Lagos State Chapter, Jagun Onabanjo opined that many MDAs and LGAs/LCDAs have unserviceable assets which can be disposed to generate revenue and advocated the buy-in of all stakeholders at entrenching standard in auctioneering practice in Lagos State.

The Lagos Government has called on stakeholders in the built environment to support the whistleblowing policy initiated by the government to stem the tide of building collapse.

The Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Dr. Idris Salako spoke on the need to speak up while engaging stakeholders in Ebute-Metta on measures to reduce building collapse in Lagos State.

He said that stemming the tide of building collapse is a collective responsibility for everyone in order to secure the precious lives and property of Lagosians.

“Recent collapses witnessed in Ebute-Metta area has become worrisome as the area accounts for approximately 40% of cases of building collapse in the State, which is in contrast to the historical reference of the area as an economic hub of old Lagos”, he said.

While lamenting the prevalence of illegal building construction in the area, the Commissioner noted that Lagos Mainland, which is home to some reputable tertiary institutions, used to be one of the oldest well-planned localities in the State with most of the streets and neighborhoods properly laid out in regular, distinguishable and functional patterns.

Salako listed some major causes of building collapse to include inappropriate foundation, use of substandard materials, poor construction technology, lack of building plan/non-compliance with approval, age of the building, and use of quacks amongst others.

He averred that to change the narrative and restore Ebute-Metta to its erstwhile status, residents must embrace the whistleblowing policy, which is creative and affordable for near real-time involvement of citizens in round-the-clock monitoring of physical developments in every nook and cranny of the State.

The Commissioner urged residents not to hesitate in reporting developers and owners who do not build in compliance with the building codes of the State, just as they must give reports of distressed buildings in their vicinity.

Earlier, the Chairman of Mainland Local Government, Mrs. Omololu Essien, berated the activities of some developers who compromise the lives and property of the people by cutting corners and failing to do the right thing, urging residents not to keep quiet when they notice the use of substandard materials in building construction because the consequences of not raising alarm will be unbearable.

Other speakers at the event include the General Manager of Lagos State Building Control Agency, Arc. Gbolahan Oki, representatives of the Lagos State Physical Planning Permit Authority and LASAMBUS.

The Commissioner for Education, Mrs Folashade Adefisayo, who made a visit to some schools in the state to see level of compliance and also sensitise them on COVID-19 disclosed this on Monday.

Adefisayo, while addressing journalist said, “There are some routines that will ensure that we are able to keep children away from each other. For one, no sports day, which is a pity because school is all about relationship. No assembly so that we don’t all come into one place.”

The Commissioner who visited the schools with a quality assurance team promised that the visit will be on a regular basis.

“That means we are not going to leave the schools alone. We are going to keep coming around, holding meetings, talking to them and encouraging them,” she said.

On the issue of face masks, Adefisayo admitted “I know they find it uncomfortable. I keep asking, isn’t it better to be uncomfortable and alive? So, let’s cope with the discomfort. We have to keep on re-enforcing the message, insisting that no mask, no entry.”

The Director-General, Lagos State Pension Commission, Folashade Onanuga, disclosed this at the 17th Retirement Benefits Documentation seminar in Lagos, noting that the commission had received approval from the state government to commence the new rate.

The Pension Reform Act 2014 increased the rate of contributions for employees and employers to a minimum of eight per cent and 10 per cent, respectively rising from 7.5 per cent formerly contributed by employers and the employees.

According to her, all was set to commence the deductions of the new rate signed into law in 2014.
