Operatives of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Lagos Sector Command, and the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority have agreed to organize a Joint Task Force with other qualified traffic managers to reduce accidents, particularly truck crashes on Lagos roads.

According to a statement released on Monday by the Director of LASTMA’s Public Affairs and Enlightenment department, Mr. Adebayo Taofiq, the General Manager, Mr. Bolaji Oreagba, reportedly agreed to the proposed Joint Task Force during a weekend courtesy call.

Corps Commander Babatunde Farinloye and his staff, the new Sector Commander for FRSC Lagos, presented the idea.

Oreagba revealed that LASTMA had been saving accident victims, particularly those engaged in truck accidents, in coordination with other emergency responders at any emergency or accident scene around the state.

The agencies include the Lagos State Ambulance Services, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, National Emergency Management Authority, Lagos Fire & Rescue Service and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps.

“Sequel to the need to prevent further loss of lives and properties through truck crashes on Ojuelegba bridge, LASTMA had deployed trained officers to be disallowing heavy duty trucks/tankers from plying on top Ojuelegba Bridge by Ikorodu Road,” he said, according to the statement.

He maintained that for fairness, equity and quick dispensation of justice on all traffic violators including truck drivers, the Lagos State Mobile would be part of the LASTMA, FRSC joint Task Force on Accident Reduction.

The GM however stated that innocent motorists including other road users who were mostly victims of road accident would be beneficial of this joint task force.

Earlier in his speech, the new Sector Commander FRSC Lagos, Corps Commander Babatunde Farinloye, said the FRSC was primarily established to maintain safety on highways across the country.

Corps Farinloye maintained that the FRSC had been collaborating with individual State Traffic Management Agencies in maintaining standard on road safety management across the country.

According to Farinloye , the FRSC and LASTMA must work together as a team for peace, safety and prosperity on the highways as this would lead to a paradigm shift from usual way of operation to an exceptional and outstanding way.

He called for more public education and enlightenment on motorists disobeying traffic regulations particularly those driving against traffic (one-way) in Lagos State.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has cautioned motorists queuing up for fuel at different filling stations against causing traffic gridlock that could impede the movement of other road users.

The General Manager of LASTMA, Bolaji Oreagba gave the advice on Tuesday while deploying more officers of the Authority on traffic monitoring around filling stations across the State.

Oreagba disclosed that the deployment became imperative following reports of long queues around filling stations caused by motorists parking indiscriminately and blocking roads while queuing to buy fuel.

He expressed displeasure at the disorderly behaviour of some drivers, who queue up haphazardly and disrupt traffic flow around various petrol stations, imploring petrol marketers to ensure that their products are sold in an orderly manner that would not impede the free movement of other road users.

“The scarcity of fuel being experienced is not an excuse to block and impede traffic flow across Lagos. We want our roads to be free. We do not want fuel queues to constitute a burden for other road users in Lagos”, the General Manager stated.

While reiterating that efficient traffic management has remained crucial in the attainment of a seamless multi-modal transportation system in Lagos, he, however, sought cooperation from the motoring public to ensure that the T.H.E.M.E.S Agenda of the present administration yields positive results in terms of socio-economic development, as well as security of lives and property.

The General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Bolaji Oreagba disclosed this today during a courtesy visit by a delegation from LAMATA led by its Director of Corporate Communication, Kolawole Ojelabi to the Agency’s Headquarters at Oshodi, Lagos.

He stated that the enforcement of Traffic Laws on reckless BRT bus operators became imperative following a series of complaints from members of the public on the recalcitrant attitude of some of the drivers, particularly at major intersections across the metropolis.

His words: “It would no longer be business as usual for some of the BRT drivers who regularly violate traffic rules and regulations without regard to the law and causing avoidable traffic obstructions on major roads across the State”

The General Manager emphasised that any LAMATA bus driver caught driving against traffic one-way, discharging passengers at undesignated bus/stops, or disobeying traffic officers/traffic lights would be dealt with, in accordance with the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law of 2018.

“LAMATA as a management must as a matter of urgency engage experts on transportation management to train and retrain their operators (drivers) in order to checkmate their excesses”, he said.

Oreagba also appealed to motorists both private and commercial bus drivers to always adhere strictly to all traffic rules and regulations.

Earlier, the Director of Corporate Communication, LAMATA, Mr. Kolawole Ojelabi called for a synergy between LAMATA and LASTMA in traffic management and enforcement.

He assured that LASTMA personnel would henceforth be invited during their quarterly ‘Village Meeting’ to educate and enlighten BRT bus drivers on the basic traffic laws and signs.

According to him: “We are aware of the recklessness of some of these drivers and on a regular basis we sack and blacklist some to prevent them from being employed by another bus service company”.

Ojelabi, however, declared that any bus operator caught violating the State’s traffic laws and regulations must be held accountable in accordance with the Law.
