The Lagos State University, LASU, has issued fifteen new guidelines for its students that are considered indecent on campus.

Additionally, the management gave lecturers instructions to make sure that no pupils are dressed indecently and are not admitted into the classrooms.

The University cautioned that it is no longer satisfied with the students’ on-campus persistent contempt for its laws and regulations regarding the manner of clothing in a statement released by Olaniyi Jeariogbe, temporary head of the Centre for Information.

The statement said the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, had informed the College Provost, Deans of Faculties and Heads of Departments, as well as faculty officers both in the main and satellite campuses to join hands to enforce the new dressing rules.

The fifteen indecent dressing codes outlined by the Institution include wearing transparent dresses, dirty jeans with holes or obscene subliminal messages, mini and skimpy skirts/dresses, and other clothes revealing sensitive parts of the body, particularly by ladies, tattered clothes, “baggy”, “saggy”, “yansh”, “ass level”, and all other forms of indecent trousers.

Others are shirts and tops with obscene write-ups, tight-fitting apparel, rolling of sleeves or flying of shirt collars, obnoxious or seductive inscription; improperly buttoned shirts dresses, shirts without buttons, complete covering of faces (very dark glasses) or wearing of face caps; piercing of body and tattooing; wearing of necklace and earrings by male students, wearing of very big dropping earrings, wearing of necklaces and nose ring by students.

The school management also warned against distractive knocking of shoes like stiletto heels to the library and lecture rooms, plaiting, weaving or bonding of hair by male students. Lousy slippers, unkempt, brightly tinted hair/eyelashes/brown, extremely bogus hair or coloured artificial hair, artificial dreadlocks, fixing of long nails as well as fixing of long eyelashes.

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Thursday, announced that his government will be setting up Lagos State Tertiary Education Trust Fund for tertiary institutions in the state.

He said the initiative would be an autonomous funding mechanism that would keep all three Lagos tertiary institutions on the path of sustainability.

Sanwo-Olu made the announcement when he received members of the Visitation Panel to LASU led by the former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Lagos, Prof. Abdulrahman Bello, at the State House, Marina.

This was contained in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Gboyega Akosile, titled, ‘Sanwo-Olu floats autonomous financing channel for Lagos’ tertiary schools, sets up dedicated trust fund’.

According to Sanwo-Olu, the move will creatively revolutionise the model for the funding of tertiary education in the country.

Sanwo-Olu said the need to create an independent funding channel for the state’s tertiary institutions became pertinent, given the nature of disputes characterising the national university system which had led to the perennial staff strikes and closure of campuses across the country.

The governor said the fund would be a pragmatic strategy to meet the schools’ requirements.

Sanwo-Olu, however, directed the Attorney General, Moyosore Onigbanjo, SAN, and the Special Adviser on Education, Hon. Tokunbo Wahab, to fashion out the statutory framework that will give legal approval to the Fund.

He said: “Now that we have three universities in Lagos, I believe there is a need for us to set up Lagos State Tertiary Education Trust Fund, which, in our view, will create a sustainable model and the funding that is required, both internally and externally, to strengthen academic research, learning and all that is necessary to keep these universities on track of their mission.

“This is an idea whose time has come at the appropriate period many schools are under closure due to industrial disputes. I am issuing the responsibility to Attorney General and Special Adviser on Education to create the legal framework for the birth of the Trust Fund. This will be another legacy initiative our Government is bringing to sustain education in our State. This will create a financial model that will ensure sustainability of these schools.”

Sanwo-Olu said the Trust Fund would create an additional funding source to the three universities, aside the monthly subventions and intervention funds from federal education agencies, including Tertiary Education Trust Fund.

A student of Lagos State University (LASU), Afeez Ogunbowale has been jailed for 21 years for being involved in armed robbery and rape of two fellow LASU students.

Ogunbowale who has been suspended by LASU over the case reportedly committed the offence alongside others who are at large, on April 18, 2018, at Okokomaiko area of Lagos.

Testifying in court on November 4, 2019, the two rape victims revealed that they lost their virginities to the attack. The victims who disclosed they were robbed of their phones, power bank, earpiece, gold chain and N1, 200 by five men but raped by two members of the gang, Ogunbowale and another who is at large, said they were able to identify the convict who is in the same faculty with them through Facebook.

Though it was alleged that the suspect confessed to the crime and prostrated to beg for forgiveness when confronted at the police station, he however denied involvement in the crime and gave an alibi to the court. He claimed he was in school preparing for an examination which was to begin in May 2018 on the night of the attack.

Justice Oluwatoyin Taiwo of Ikeja Special Offences Court who passed judgement on the case on Tuesday, June 29, said Ogunbowale was found guilty of conspiracy, rape and armed robbery.

Taiwo held that the prosecution proved its case beyond a reasonable doubt and further noted that the testimony of the victims was compelling.
