Hakeem Muri-Okunola, the Lagos State Head of Service, has allegedly said there were no bloodstains at the Lekki toll gate when the state governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, visited the scene hours after the shooting that took place on October 20.

Premium Times reports that Muri-Okunola said this during his cross-examination at the Lagos Judicial Panel on Tuesday, June 29.

The state government had set up the panel to investigate acts of police brutality in the state as well as investigate the October 20, 2020 shooting incident that took place while #EndSARS protesters gathered to protest.

Muri-Okunola while being cross-examined by counsels to the #EndSARS protesters, Olumide Fusika and Adeshina Ogunlana said when Governor Sanwo-Olu and his entourage including himself visited the Lekki toll plaza between 12:30 a.m. and 1:30 a.m., few hours after the shooting, they did not see any bloodstains on the ground.

At his first appearance before the panel last Tuesday, Muri-Okunola said injuries recorded in the aftermath of the Lekki shooting were predominantly fractures, machete wounds, and minor cuts.

He said “At the time we were there, most of the injuries were all in the nature of cuts, bruises from machetes’ wounds, and stampede. Nobody at the hospitals said they were shot at,”

During his cross-examination yesterday, one of the EndSARS counsel, Fusika told Muri-Okunola that his last testimony contradicts what doctors from Reddington and other hospitals that treated victims of the shooting told the panel. According to Fusika, the video clip presented by the Head of Service during his last testimony was edited.

Although the counsel representing the state government, Abiodun Owonikoko, raised an objection to the line of question, the panel allowed the question.

Responding to the question, Muri-Okunola said the video clip presented was the way it was “because cameras were not admitted at a point during the hospital visit.” He added that the government only tendered the “relevant portion of the clip.

Amidst the numerous questions thrown at him by counsels to #EndSARS protesters, Muri-Okunola insisted that at the time the governor visited the hospital, they were informed that there were no persons with gunshot injuries. Fusika presented records from the hospitals that treated victims of gunshot injuries, asking the Head of Service to react to them.

“Either the hospital misled the governor or the governor misunderstood. We were informed by Reddington, Lekki, that the patients were not shot”Muri-Okunola said.

The chairperson of the panel, Justice Doris Okuwobi, adjourned the matter till July 3.

The Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai, have insisted that nobody was killed during the #EndSARS protest at Lekki toll gate in Lagos State.

While maintaining that there was no corpse during the protest at Lekki toll gate, Buratai stressed that those claiming protesters were killed were seeing double.

The Army chief made this known at the decoration of 39 newly promoted Major Generals on Friday in Abuja.

“I am glad that we held the Spiritual Warfare Seminar on Wednesday and most of the decorated Generals today are graduates of the Spiritual Warfare Seminar.

“I must say that the Spiritual Warfare Seminar we had last time, helped us during the last #EndSARS protest to the extent that there was no single corpse, but some persons were seeing double at Lekki Toll Gate in Lagos State,” Buratai said.

Several protesters demonstrating against bad governance were reported killed by soldiers at the Lekki toll gate.

Popular Nigerian Disc Jockey, Obianuju Catherine Udeh, also known as DJ Switch, had alleged that soldiers shot and killed some of the people protesting at Lekki toll gate.

However, the 81 Division of the Nigerian Army had maintained that soldiers drafted to the scene didn’t kill any protester.

The Army, however, admitted that soldiers were at the venue of the protest but did not kill anybody.

The Nigerian Army has insisted that soldiers did not shoot at protesters at the Lekki Toll Gate area of Lagos State.

The Army, however admitted that soldiers were deployed to ‘restore normalcy’ in the area on the order of the State Govt.

The Acting Deputy Director, 81 Division, Army Public Relations, Osoba Olaniyi disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday.

He also described reports of a massacre by the officers as “untrue, unfounded, and aimed at causing anarchy in the country”.

Olaniyi also stated that the decision to involve the military was taken by the Lagos State Government after a 24-hour curfew was imposed.

“This was a result of the violence which led to several police stations being burnt, policemen killed, suspects in police custody released, and weapons carted away.

“The situation was fast degenerating into anarchy. It was at this point that the LASG requested for the military to intervene in order to restore normalcy,” the statement read in part.

Popular entertainers, Folarin Falana, popularly known as Falz, and Runtown, have vowed they won’t back down on the #EndSARS protest in Lagos State against police brutality and extortion.

Both entertainers led the protest, which took place in the Lekki area of Lagos on Thursday.

During the protest, youths were seen carrying placards and chanting #EndSARS with inscriptions on some of the placards read, ‘Enough is Enough’ and ‘We are all victims’.

Both Falz and Runtown counselled the protesters not to be violent as they engaged security operatives who attempted to disrupt the protest.

In an Instagram live chat before the protest, Falz, son of human rights activist, Femi Falana, said, “No backing down. We move. The police are already there, waiting for us but we are not here to cause trouble. It is a peaceful protest. Coming through.”

The protesters, who gathered at Lekki toll gate, are marching to Onikan and Appeal Court through the Nigerian Law School, Lagos.

The protesters are seeking the dissolution of the FSARS unit of the Nigeria Police Force.

Recall that there had been an earlier announcement that the #ENDSARS protest would be held across Lagos for three days, starting from Wednesday.
