The election to replace outgoing UK Prime Minister Liz Truss as leader of the Conservative Party should take place by October 28, the official in charge said Thursday.

This is following the resignation of Truss on Thursday, just 45 days after assuming the office, the shortest tenure of any British prime minister.

She announced her decision to step down outside Downing Street.

“It will be possible to conduct a ballot and conclude a leadership election by Friday, October 28. So we should have a new leader in place before the fiscal statement which will take place on (October) the 31,” Graham Brady, chairman of the influential 1922 Committee of backbench MPs, told reporters

The new Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Liz Truss, has resigned.

Truss barely lasted for two months on the seat.

She had defeated Rishi Sunak by 81,326 votes to 60,399 in an internal contest after Boris Johnson’s resignation in July.

The lawmaker was the Conservatives’ fourth head of the British government since 2015, promising to unleash Britain’s potential by going for growth and removing the obstacles holding the country back.

The United Kingdom Prime Minister, Liz Truss, appointed British-Nigerian Member of Parliament Kemi Badenoch as an International Trade Secretary on Tuesday.

The UK PM had surprised many by reaching the last four in the leadership contest.

Recall that Badenoch had vied for the office of the British PM as a member of the Conservative Party and made it to the top five in July.

Badenoch entered the Commons as a Member of Parliament, MP, for Saffron Walden in 2017.

She has also been outspoken on issues such as ”gender-neutral toilets and anti-woke”.

Following Truss’s appointments so far, it would be the first time in UK history that the leading cabinet lieutenants of Britain’s Prime Minister had no white occupying any of the “great offices of state” – Treasury, Foreign Office, and Home Affairs.

President Muhammadu Buhari has, on behalf of the citizens and Government of Nigeria, congratulated Liz Truss on her assumption of office as new British Prime Minister.

Buhari rejoiced with the former Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Affairs of the United Kingdom, “whose antecedents in government, politics, and diplomacy will further shape and strengthen relations with Nigeria and other countries.”

The President affirms that the shared ties between Nigeria and Britain remain strong, positive, and mutually beneficial while working with Truss to deepen that relationship in the interest of both countries.

This was disclosed in a statement by Femi Adesina, Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the President, on Tuesday.

Buhari, however, appreciated the warmth and friendliness of the immediate past Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, wishing him the best in his future endeavours.

Recall that Truss was confirmed as Britain’s new Conservative leader on Monday, taking over from Prime Minister Boris Johnson, one of Zelensky’s greatest backers.

Liz Truss is widely expected to be confirmed as Britain’s new prime minister today, September 5, before officially taking over from Boris Johnson a day later.

Boris Johnson was forced to announce his resignation in July after months of scandal and will travel to Scotland to meet Queen Elizabeth on Tuesday to officially tender his resignation.

The Foreign Secretary is believed to be on course to comfortably beat former Chancellor Rishi Sunak to the keys to Number 10, which would make her Britain’s 56th PM.

Truss, the front runner in the race to replace Johnson, if appointed, will become the Conservatives’ fourth prime minister since a 2015 election.

Confirmation of the result will come at 12.30pm. In a break from tradition on Tuesday, Mr. Johnson and his successor will go to Balmoral rather than Buckingham Palace to meet Queen Elizabeth, who will ask the new leader to form a government.

The Sunday Times reported that the pair would fly there in separate planes for security reasons.

Ms. Truss will start work as PM on the flight back, barring a major upset unexpectedly putting Mr. Sunak in charge.

The Queen will receive Mr. Johnson at her Aberdeenshire home, where he will formally tender his resignation.

On Tuesday, the winner will travel to Scotland to meet Queen Elizabeth, who will ask the new leader to form a government.

The new PM inherits a flagging economy, with inflation at a 40-year high.

Ms. Truss, tipped by pollsters to win the contest, has promised to announce further help to shield consumers within a week of taking over. She plans to deliver £30bn in tax cuts through an emergency Budget later this month, arguing the UK’s tax burden is behind sluggish growth.

Her rival, former chancellor Mr. Sunak, has signalled he believes he has lost, saying his job “now is just to support a Conservative government”.

She is planning a significant intervention this week, where tens of billions of pounds will be committed to helping with rising bills and inflation. That will include tax cuts and help for families and businesses. Expect her to also talk about an energy strategy to protect the UK against further turbulence in years to come.

Conservative rivals Rishi Sunak and Liz Truss, offering competing visions for Britain’s response to multiple crises, will duel in the coming weeks to become the next prime minister after the party’s lawmakers held a last vote Wednesday.

Former finance minister Sunak, running on a centrist platform of fiscal rectitude allied with “green levies” to fight climate change, again headed the field with 137 votes in the fifth and final elimination ballot.

The crucial race for second place was narrowly won by Foreign Secretary Liz Truss on 113 votes, against 105 for former defence secretary Penny Mordaunt.

Sunak and Truss now take their case to Conservative party members, who will decide the new leader and prime minister after a series of nationwide hustings in August.

The result will be announced on September 5. But Britain is already guaranteed to get either its first prime minister of colour, or its third woman leader.

Sunak’s resignation as finance minister this month helped to topple outgoing leader Boris Johnson after months of scandal including “Partygate”, and Downing Street is reportedly running an “anyone but Rishi” campaign.

At his last session of Prime Minister’s Questions in the House of Commons earlier Wednesday, Johnson bowed out by saying “Hasta la vista, baby!”.

In a hint of support for Truss’s low-tax platform, the premier urged his successor to “cut taxes and deregulate where you can to make this the greatest place to live and invest”.

Truss tweeted that she was “ready to hit the ground running from day one”.

But whoever wins the Tory race, “like some household detergent, would wipe the floor” with the main opposition Labour party, Johnson predicted.

– Mordaunt moribund –

Mordaunt — the one-time bookmakers’ favourite — lapsed to outsider status after Truss’s fellow right-winger Kemi Badenoch was eliminated on Tuesday.

In a bid to woo those MPs, Truss wrote in Wednesday’s Daily Telegraph that her plan to revive the economy would be “based around tax cuts, deregulation and tough reform”.

Former minister David Davis, a backer of Mordaunt, accused Sunak of lending votes to Truss so he could face her in the runoff.

He wants to fight Liz, because she’s the person who will lose the debate with him,” he told LBC radio.

A YouGov poll published before the vote indicated that, despite his popularity with colleagues, Sunak was the least appealing candidate to the members.

The BBC plans to host a live televised debate with the final two candidates on Monday. Sunak won the two previous debates, according to snap polls, and the second one featured a no-holds-barred clash with Truss.

But Sunak’s popularity with the Tory grassroots has faded since questions were raised over his family’s tax arrangements, and as he presided over sky-rocketing inflation, which hit a new 40-year high of 9.4 per cent in June.

In a new policy announcement, Sunak vowed an “ambitious new plan to make the UK energy independent” by 2045 in order to prevent future energy-driven inflation spikes, after Russia’s war in Ukraine sent gas prices rocketing.

– ‘Fantasy economics’ –

Mordaunt had headed the same YouGov poll of Tory members previously.

But she slipped after a damaging few days in which her former boss, one-time UK Brexit pointman David Frost, slammed her work ethic and questions were raised over her stance on transgender rights.

Johnson announced on July 7 he was quitting as Conservative leader after a government rebellion in protest at his scandal-hit administration.

Under Britain’s parliamentary system, the leader of the biggest party is prime minister and can be changed mid-term without having to call a general election.

Labour leader Keir Starmer accused the Tory candidates of “fantasy economics” before turning his fire on the outgoing Johnson.

“He is a complete bullshitter and I think he’s been found out,” he told Labour prime minister Tony Blair’s former spin chief Alastair Campbell in a podcast.

Starmer attacked Johnson for the Downing Street “Partygate” scandal, which saw him fined for breaking the Covid lockdown rules he set for the public.

“It wasn’t just that he did things which broke the rules, it’s that he then took the piss out of the public with his ridiculous defences afterwards,” the Labour leader added.

It is “good for the country” that Johnson is going, Starmer added, saying it was reflected in public opinion at the last local elections at which the Tories lost hundreds of council seats.
