The Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 is considering lockdown in some specific states like, the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja; as well as Lagos and Plateau States.

This as the government expressed worries that with more than 127,000 confirmed cases, Nigerians are still not obeying the safety protocols.

The National Incident Manager of the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19, Dr. Mukhtar Muhammad, who appeared on Channels Television on Friday, said “Certainly, even if we are going to have a lockdown, it is not going to be a total lockdown.

“A couple of weeks back, we analysed the data and we identified the hotspot local government areas.”

Mostly, the areas affected are the urban local governments in Lagos, Abuja, Kaduna, Plateau.

“The urban areas are the most affected and that is why we have these superspreaders and that is where we are going to target. We have analysed that and we are advising the states based on the data that these are the focused areas where these transmissions are more than the others.”

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), reported 864 new coronavirus infections in the country on Friday morning.

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), reported 864 new coronavirus infections in the country on Friday morning.

The centre also confirmed the nation’s deaths toll to now stand at 1,547, adding that Lagos State recorded zero infection.

The Federal Government on Tuesday said Nigerians’ level of compliance will be the determining factor on whether or not fresh lockdown will be imposed.

The government stated this amid the increase in the number of virus infection, as its battled the second wave of the pandemic.

The National Coordinator of the Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVID-19, Dr Sani Aliyu, who disclosed this while during his on TVC on Tuesday, noted the taskforce is yet to take a decision on imposing a fresh lockdown in the country.

“The behaviour of the public when it comes to these rules matters. We have countries abroad that have very strict non-pharmaceutical intervention measures and everybody follows it.

“The flights are coming in, schools are open, churches are open, and they don’t have COVID-19 problems because everybody observes the rules.

“We definitely don’t want a lockdown and because we don’t want to lock down, we need to make sure we do everything we can to prevent ourselves from reaching that state where the government will have to take action,” he said.

The Federal Government ordered a lockdown in March 2020 in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja, Lagos and Ogun States for over five weeks during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic.

It led to job losses as airlines, hotels, banks, among others cut their workforce due to the crushing economic effect of the lockdown

The post COVID-19 Lockdown: UK minister resigns over Dominic Cummings trip first appeared on InsideOjodu.]]>
British Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s government was hit by its first resignation on Tuesday over the controversy surrounding top aide Dominic Cummings’ cross-country trip during the coronavirus lockdown.

Undermining attempts by ministers to try and move on from the crisis which has dominated British politics for days, Douglas Ross, a minister for Scotland, quit in protest.

“I have constituents who didn’t get to say goodbye to loved ones; families who could not mourn together; people who didn’t visit sick relatives because they followed the guidance of the government,” he said in a Twitter statement announcing his departure.

“I cannot in good faith tell them they were all wrong and one senior advisor to the government was right.”

He added that Cummings’ interpretation of government rules was “not shared by the vast majority of people”.

The resignation will pile more pressure on Cummings, who held an extraordinary press conference Monday to justify driving his wife and young son on a 264-mile (425-kilometre) trip from London to Durham in the northeast of England during the height of the coronavirus crisis.

Not long after Ross quit, Harriet Baldwin joined a growing list of Conservative MPs calling on Cummings to resign.

Tory party grandee Michael Heseltine told Sky News that “the lack of credibility” in Cummings’ version of events was “damaging the government”.

Some members of the clergy have also called on him to stand down as well as opposition party members, who will meet later today regarding the crisis.

Downing Street said it “regrets” the decision by Ross.

The resignation came after a cabinet heavyweight defended Cummings and said the controversial aide did not break the law.

Michael Gove, Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, said Cummings had acted reasonably in driving from London to Durham and then taking a separate journey to a local beauty spot, Barnard Castle, to – as he claimed – test his eyesight.

“What’s clear is that he didn’t break the law, he didn’t break the rules, he sought to protect his family and he also sought to ensure that the risk of anyone in his family infecting anyone else was absolutely minimised,” Gove told the BBC on Tuesday.

Cummings drove to his parents’ home in Durham after feeling ill because he and his wife, who was also feeling unwell, needed possible back-up childcare for their young son.

Despite calls for him to resign, Cummings has so far resisted and instead defended his actions.

He told reporters he had acted “reasonably and legally”.

The prime minister called Cummings’ actions “plausible”.

Also on Tuesday, the Office for National Statistics said the number of deaths in Britain “involving” the coronavirus had risen above 46,000, far higher than the 36,914 deaths officially confirmed in the government’s count.

The Lagos State Government has shut two facilities in Badagry West LCDA of the state for contravening new guidelines issued by the government to operators of hotels, clubs, and other entertainment outfits in the state.

This was disclosed by Mr Gboyega Akosile, the Chief Press Secretary to Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu in a tweet via his official handle @gboyegaakosile

According to the tweet, the facilities include Maggi Hotel, and Tambari Theatre Art (Night Club).

Mr Akosile noted that the Special Adviser to the Governor on Tourism, Arts and Culture, Mr Solomon Bonu, stated that the facilities were shut for violating and contravening the order of the State government

“It was also discovered that there is a high level of immorality going on in these places. The Night Club has become home for strippers, drug barons, and all sorts of mischief,” Bonu said.

The Special Adviser expressed displeasure with the unlawful practices by the management of the two facilities, stressing that the guidelines issued by the Ministry of Tourism, Arts, and Culture were not followed in spite of several advocacies by the state government.

Bonu added that legal action will be instituted against the owners of the hotel and night club to ensure appropriate sanctions are meted out.

He, therefore, pleaded with residents to provide useful information that would assist in discovering other hotels and clubhouses still operating in different parts of Lagos despite restrictions by the state government.

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Youth Task Force on COVID-19 has again advised President Muhammadu Buhari to lockdown Nigeria due to rising cases on coronavirus.

Chairman of the Presidential Advisory Committee Against Corruption (PACAC), Itsey Sagay, in his suggestion, said Nigeria should be locked for two months, DailyPost reports.

Officials of the Buhari administration have also decried the level of compliance by citizens since the lockdown ease.

On Thursday, the Progressive Students Movement (PSM) joined calls to the federal government to impose a fresh ‘stay at home’ order.

PSM President, Bestman Okereafor, spoke in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

Okereafor expressed concern about facilities, equipment and health workers preparedness in states.

“The Federal Government, as a matter of urgency, should declare a state of emergency in states with high level of confirmed COVID-19 cases basically to reduce the spread of the pandemic.

“The state of emergency should come on these states through strict enforcement of lockdown for at least two weeks.

“This move had become imperative following the increase in inter-state movement especially at night hours notwithstanding the present night curfew imposed by the Federal Government meant to ensure containment of the pandemic,’’ he said.

The World Health Organization, WHO, on Tuesday urged countries to apply caution in lifting COVID-19 lockdowns, warning of a resurgence of infections if current restrictions were relaxed too soon.

Takeshi Kasai, WHO’s Regional Director for the Western Pacific, said this during an online media briefing in Manila, NAN reports.

Kasai said that lockdown measures have proven effective by reducing transmission of the highly infectious disease while easing the burden on the overstretched health system.

According to him, “This is going to be a long battle. This is not the time to relax.”

Instead, he stressed the need to be ready for “a new way of living that strikes the right balance between the measures to keep the virus in check and enable vital parts of the economy and society to function.”

Kasai urged people in the region to protect themselves, their family and their community by physically distancing and frequently cleaning their hands.

Others are covering coughs and sneeze as well as staying at home and away from others, especially when sick.

He also urged the private sector to adopt new ways of working, such as establishing staff to work from home where possible and other measures to reduce the risk of infections in the workplace.

“For the government, this means preparing for the worst, having a system that works in every corner of the country to detect and care for people in case of large-scale community transmission,” he said.

Already, Kasai said, COVID-19 had upended millions of peoples’ lives and had caused a major economic impact on the world.

He said that the governments in the region were making “extremely complex decisions about introducing or enhancing or easing or lifting lockdowns and physical distancing measures.

“As we move forward in these difficult times, our lives, our health systems and approach to stopping transmission must continue to adapt and evolve along with the epidemic.”

According to him, until a vaccine is found, the process of adapting to the epidemic will have to become a new normal.

“There is no one-size-fits-all approach to doing this but WHO strongly urges that decisions on measures be guided by public health principles, the lifting of lockdowns, and other measures that need to be done gradually.

“If restrictions are relaxed or lifted before the strong system is in place to identify, isolate and care for this sick, and trace and quarantine their contacts, this will likely lead to a resurgence of diseases.

“As long as the new Coronavirus is circulating, no country is safe from potentially overwhelming outbreaks,” he said.

As the number of  COVID-19 pandemic cases rises daily in the country, the Federal Government has appealed to Nigerians to comply with the lockdown directive and not resist or encourage others to resist it.

The Chairman Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVID-19, Boss Mustapha, made this appeal on Wednesday while briefing Nigerians on the measures to combat the virus.

According to him, “The President himself attests to the fact that it is a difficult, painful decision, a decision that must be taken in the interest of the people of Nigeria. We are cognisance of the fact that our social life has been disrupted by the lockdown.

“Our constant appeal to the people of Nigeria is to see the long-term gain that will come out of this temporary dislocation in our communal life and try all possible to accommodate the processes put in place by the Federal Government.

“So, this is not the time to encourage resistance to the lockdown. This is the time to appeal to our people to respect the advice that has come out from experts, state and federal government.”

“We are not operating in isolation, we see what is happening all over the world and how some governments have reacted. Some countries have been on lockdown for the past one month, and they are not thinking about lifting the lockdown.”

Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun on Tuesday said the current relaxation of the lockdown in the state from 7am to 2pm would be suspended on Friday.

The governor also said the state would soon commence strict enforcement of wearing of face masks in the public, saying it would help flatten the spread of coronavirus.

The governor in the statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Kunle Somorin, urged the residents of the state to consider the extension announced by the President on Monday a necessary sacrifice to defeat an invisible and deadly enemy.

He said, “Therefore, the current window of relaxation of the lockdown in the state from 7am to 2pm, which follows the same pattern of last week, will still be available for this Wednesday (15th April) and Friday (17th April, 2020) only.

“This is to allow the residents prepare for the extension of the lockdown and restock on food and other essential items. However, Ogun State borders remain closed.

“It should be emphasised that people should only go out if they need to and are required at all times when outside their homes to wear a face mask, including locally made face masks, even as they observe other social distancing measures.

“The state will soon commence strict enforcement of wearing of face mask in the public as it has been shown to help flatten the spread of the virus.”

The Northern Governors’ Forum on Monday has met over the COVID-19 pandemic, seeking for cooperation in other to tackle the virus in the region.

The meeting, which was held via a teleconference was chaired by the Chairman of the forum and Plateau State Governor, Simon Lalong.

Part of the discussion was to examine the impact of the virus in the region and also stressed that they cannot lock down the entire north.

In a statement issued by the Director of Press and Public Affairs to Plateau Governor, Simon Macham, members of the Forum resolved to strengthen preventive measures against the pandemic, by enhancing border controls and surveillance as well as greater collaboration to ensure that there is synergy among them in movement restriction.

While noting that the lockdown in some states in the region had varying levels of success, the governors also raised concerns that enforcing cross-border movements remains a challenge as some of the cases recorded in some states were imported from outside despite the closure of borders by their respective governments.

The statement said, “They (northern governors) agreed that at the moment, each state would adopt the measure suitable to its setting because total lockdown of the region will come at a very high cost since most of its citizens are farmers who need to go to farms since the rains have started.

“Another issue discussed by the northern governors was the issue of palliatives from the Federal Government where they regretted that so far, no state in the region had received a dime as special allocation despite the fact that some of them have recorded cases while others are making frantic efforts to prevent any outbreak, as well as prepare against any eventuality.

“This they observed has eaten deep into the pockets of the states as they have spent a lot of money already and may not be able to sustain this for a long time. Since prevention is better than cure, they canvassed that the Federal Government grant them some special funds just as it has done to other states.

“The northern governors lamented that the region has no testing centre, which is very disturbing. They resolved to again liaise with the Federal Government to ensure that each state at least gets one testing centre while highly populated ones get two.
