The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors and the Los Angeles County Department of Health on Wednesday declared a local and public state of emergency after 6 new cases of coronavirus were confirmed in the last 48 hours in the county.

According to Fox LA, three of the infected patients recently traveled to Northern Italy, two patients had family members who live outside the area that had the virus, and the sixth patient has a job that requires them to make contact with travelers.

L.A. County Board of Supervisors Chairwoman Kathryn Barger said the declaration was being made out of an abundance of caution and that the state and the federal government will continue to work together.

In addition, she made it clear that the local government, health care facilities, schools, and communities must be active in efforts to be prepared for more cases of the disease and should also follow the precautionary measures to help slow down the spread of the virus.

A 79-year-old former Delta Air Lines flight attendant is suing the airline after being fired over accusations that she swiped a carton of milk and other on-flight goods.

Ida Gomez Llanos, who worked for the company for 57 years, claims she was the victim of a smear campaign orchestrated by envious colleagues who wanted her gone because of her seniority and whopping $250,000 salary.

The lawsuit, filed this month in a Los Angeles court, claims she was “harassed” and “bullied,” and that the spreading of lies led to her being penalized and eventually terminated.

“I couldn’t believe it,” Llanos told the Daily Mail. “I’ve been accused of so many things and none were true. I try not to take it personally, but when you get mean about me and start lying, that is a problem.”

Llanos, who was reportedly the highest-ranking flight attendant in Los Angeles and ranked fifth in the country, said she received her first write-up in nearly 60 years in April 2018. She had been accused of stealing a carton of milk, as well as cereal packets and a chocolate bar. Colleagues also claimed Llanos put Bailey’s Irish Cream in her coffee.

‘They want to get rid of the older flight attendants,” she said. “I think they put us on a higher surveillance. It’s because they have to pay us so much because we’ve been there forever and your pay scale goes up each year. I think they can hire four newer flight attendants for what they pay me.”

Llanos said that as the most senior flight attendant in Los Angeles, she received company perks like a priority on overtime shifts. Her colleagues, she said, became envious of her and launched a smear campaign to get her fired.

From 536 in 2013 to 1,047 in 2018, reports have it that deaths of homeless people have gone up.

Taking the increase of the homeless population into account, the total death rate has tripled since that time.

The report also said that the biggest factors that heavily impacted the death rate to take its toll are drug and alcohol overdoses.

Figures show that from 2016 to 2018, the overdose death rate for the homeless people was as high as 26 times more than the general population in homes.

In a news release, the director of the county health department, Dr Barbara Ferrer said, “This alarming increase in homeless deaths requires immediate action to improve the care for our most vulnerable populations.”

Accounting for nearly 25% of the number of deaths in the six-year span, coronary heart disease was the top cause of death. And other leading causes of deaths also includes traffic injuries, homicide and also suicide.

The report also discovered that the general population lived 22 years more than the homeless people.

Supervisor Hilda L. Solis said in an interview, “Homelessness can have a devastating impact on a person’s health and well-being, and we need to better understand the underlying causes that contribute to our County’s high mortality rate among those who are experiencing homelessness.”

As a result of the increase in deaths of homeless people, the report recommended a few actions to do something about the saddening news, including creating a team to review homeless deaths to have a better understanding of the situation.

Three deaths have been linked to two wildfires in Southern California as law enforcement officials said Saturday that a second body had been found at a mobile home park in Calimesa where 74 structures were destroyed Thursday.

The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department said they were working to identify the victim. The second person who died in the so-called Sandalwood Fire has been identified as 89-year-old Lois Arvikson. Her son Don Turner said she had called him to say she was evacuating, but he never heard from her again.

Some 100,000 residents were ordered out of their homes because of the wind-driven wildfire that broke out Thursday evening in the San Fernando Valley, though authorities began lifting evacuation orders in some areas Saturday. It spread westward through tinder-dry brush in hilly subdivisions on the outskirts of the nation’s second-largest city.

As of Saturday morning, fire officials said the Sandalwood blaze had burned 823 acres and was 25 percent contained. The Saddleridge Fire, in the city’s San Fernando Valley area, had burned 7,552 acres and was 19 percent contained.

One man who tried to fight the Saddleridge blaze died of a heart attack, and one firefighter reported a minor eye injury. The fire’s cause is under investigation, and authorities warned that the threat of flare-ups remained. Thousands of people remained under evacuation orders, though some were lifted Saturday.

Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Brian Humphrey said the bulk of the fire at the city’s edge had moved away from homes and into rugged hillsides and canyons where firefighters were making steady progress slowing its advance. Television footage showed plumes of smoke rising from the area but no walls of towering flame, as a water-dropping helicopter moved in to dump another cascade on the blaze.

Firefighters worked under sunny skies, but air quality was poor as smoke dispersed over much of greater Los Angeles. Air quality officials urged people to limit outdoor activities.

The forecast called for low humidity — in the 10 percent range — with light wind and an occasional gust up to 15 mph.

Fire danger remained high for much of Southern California, with warnings in place for large swaths of Ventura and Santa Barbara counties west of Los Angeles.

The cause of the Los Angeles blaze wasn’t immediately known, though arson investigators said a witness reported seeing sparks or flames coming from a power line near where the fire is believed to have started, said Peter Sanders, a spokesman for the Los Angeles Fire Department.

A woman in California was apprehended and consequently charged on Friday with the death of her daughter after allegedly leaving her alone in a running car overnight with the heater on and a blanket covering her, according to officials.

The LA County district attorney’s office announced Friday that 34-year-old Lacey Ana Mazzarella of Rancho Palos Verdes has been charged with one count each of murder and child neglect resulting in death.

Mazzarella allegedly left her daughter, 2-year-old June Love Agosto, in a car on Sept. 22 and returned early the next morning to find the child dead, according to Deputy District Attorney David Zygielbaum.

“The engine and heater were both left running, the prosecutor added,” the office said in a news release.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said in a prior news release that deputies at the Carson station responded to a location regarding a “baby not breathing call” and found the 2-year-old unresponsive. Los Angeles County Fire Department paramedics transported the girl to a local hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

In an initial coroner’s report obtained by FOX11, the mother admitted to police she left the child alone in the car at about 11 p.m. on Sept. 21 before getting into another vehicle to drink alcohol with a friend. She told authorities she then fell asleep.

The woman told police she had put the 2-year-old in her car seat with a blanket on her, the windows rolled up, and the heat on for about four to five hours, according to the report obtained by FOX11.

When the 34-year-old mother woke up several hours later, she said she checked on her toddler to find vomit on the child’s clothes with burns to the girl’s face, chest and arms.

“Skin was coming off the decedent’s back,” the report also obtained by KTLA said.

In the coroner’s report, the mother said she placed June outside on the lawn and sprayed her with a hose in an attempt to revive her and cool her off. Paramedics took the child to an area hospital, but she was found to be in full cardiac arrest.

“She’s my only grandchild. I just came out here and June celebrated her second birthday. June Love was a beautiful baby, she deserved a good life. She deserved to grow up, go to school,” the child’s grandmother, Helen Hernandez, told FOX11.

During her arraignment on Friday afternoon, Mazzarella entered a not guilty plea as a preliminary hearing was scheduled for Oct. 23, according to KTLA.

Prosecutors said the 34-year-old faces up to 15 years to life in prison if convicted as charged. Bail was requested by prosecutors at $1.15 million, the DA’s office said.

The child’s official cause of death has yet to be determined, pending the result of additional forensic tests.

Officials said the incident remains under investigation.

The Los Angeles Police Department on Saturday said it was investigating how a recruitment ad wound up on the controversial website Breitbart.

The ad, which reportedly appeared Friday night, showed a uniformed officer with the word: “Choose your future! LAPD is hiring!”

Breitbart has garnered criticism over the years for its incendiary content, with headlines such as “The Smartest People in the World Are All Men” and “Milo: The solution to online ‘harassment’ is simple; Women should log off.”

Multiple advertisers have left the site recently.

The department has denied knowingly placing an ad on the site, telling the Los Angeles Times that such a job listing would conflict with its core values. An LAPD spokesman told Fox News the department was first alerted by its social media team.

“No. LAPD did NOT purchase or otherwise acquire ad space on that website,” LAPD Chief Michel Moore tweeted Saturday.

He said the department was trying to determine whether the posting was meant to tarnish its image.

City of Los Angeles personnel department spokesman Bruce Whidden told the Times his department would buy job ads through Google on behalf of the LAPD and other city departments.

The department said Saturday it had stopped Google Ads altogether to “reexamine our ad filters and take all necessary steps to ensure tighter control of ad settings.”

Breitbart spokeswoman Elizabeth Moore issued a statement to the Times saying the company was “one of the most pro-police, pro-law-enforcement news organizations in America.”

Breitbart did not immediately respond to Fox News’ request for comment.

Authorities in Los Angeles on Thursday found a burned body stuffed in a shopping cart at a city homeless encampment, a report said.

The find comes after several recent fire attacks on the homeless in the city, The Los Angeles Times reported. It was unclear if the person was homeless, but the report said it was recovered at a spot in Van Nuys that is frequented by transients.

Homelessness in Los Angeles has been a top issue in the city that has attracted national attention after President Trump sent a team to take a firsthand look at the issue.

In July, Democratic Mayor Eric Garcetti issued a public invitation for the Republican president to walk the streets with him and see the suffering and squalid conditions. The mayor released a letter to Trump on Tuesday saying he looked forward to working together, but tensions between the White House and officials in heavily Democratic California were also on vivid display.

Garcetti, who said 36,000 people in the city are homeless on any given night, implied that he was ready to talk but wrote that “the federal government has woefully underfunded our housing safety net, contributing to homelessness” and slashed funding for new housing.

“We must put politics aside,” he wrote.

A Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department deputy who said he was shot by a sniper on Wednesday, launching a manhunt for the shooter, “completely fabricated” the story and will be relieved of his duties, the sheriff’s department announced at a news conference Saturday night.

Sheriff’s Deputy Angel Reinosa, a 21-year-old rookie with the department, had cut holes in his shirt to make it look like he had been shot and was treated for a “bruise” on his shoulder at a hospital following the allegedly made-up incident, Homicide Bureau Capt. Kent Wegener said.

Assistant Sheriff Robin Limon told reporters the department was “incredibly disappointed” by the case and that Reinosa had been relieved of his duties. The department is launching a criminal investigation into Reinosa’s false report, Limon added.

“Things didn’t add up. There was no sniper, no shots fired and no gunshot injuries sustained to his shoulder. Completely fabricated.”

— Capt. Kent Wegener, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department

Wegener said the investigation found no ballistic evidence at the scene and no witnesses said they had heard any shots.

He added that Reinosa hasn’t said why he did it.

The deputy claimed he was shot while walking to his car from the sheriff’s station in Lancaster in northern L.A. County. Reinosa reported that he was shot in the chest but said his bulletproof vest deflected the bullet into his shoulder, causing a bruise.

Heavily armed deputies wearing tactical gear set up a perimeter and launched a massive search for a suspect in triple-digit temperatures Wednesday but weren’t able to find a suspect.
