He, along with his teammate Kevin De Bruyne, and Arsenal’s Bukola Saka, alongside Harry Kane and others, were nominated for the prestigious award. Haaland, with 36 goals in the Premier League this season, has emerged as the winner of this award.

He is now the fourth player to win the Man City Player of the Year award, following Kevin De Bruyne, who won the award in 2019/20 and 2021/22, Ruben Dias, who won it in 2020/21, and Vincent Kompany, who was the first to win it in 2011/12.

He emerged as the winner of the award through a combination of public votes, the votes of the 20 club captains, and the opinions of a panel of football experts.  Haaland beat seven other nominees, including De Bruyne, Kane, Martin Odegaard, Marcus Rashford, Bukayo Saka, and Kieran Trippier.

The new contract is expected to be £500,000-a-week.

The new deal would make Haaland become the best-paid player in the Premier League.

Halland currently earns £375,000 per week, putting him equal at the top of the Premier League’s best-paid stars, along with teammate Kevin De Bruyne and Man United shotstopper David de Gea.

The Norwegian striker has also scored 42 times so far for Manchester City.

The 22-year-old performance has seen him linked with Real Madrid, who are believed to be keen on landing him in the summer of 2024.

The player’s current deal lasts until 2027.

However, at the end of the season, Man City would be negotiating a new deal with Haaland to extend that by a year as part of the proposals to maintain Haaland’s services despite Real Madrid’s interest in him.

The fee for the 25-year-old is understood to be £45m and he moves to the Emirates after undergoing a medical and agreeing personal terms. Jesus will wear the No 9 shirt recently vacated by Alexandre Lacazette, who left for Lyon on a free transfer.

The Gunners put in nearly six months of work with Jesus’ representative Marcello Pettinati to ensure they were in pole position to recruit him from City this summer.

He becomes the north London club’s fourth signing of the summer following the additions of Fabio Vieira, Matt Turner and Marquinhos

I know Gabriel personally very well, and we all know him well from his time in the Premier League and being really successful here. “This is a position that’s been on our radar for a long time now and we have managed to get a player that we all wanted, so I’m really happy.”

Salah left the field in tears when he was forced off with a shoulder injury in the first half of that game and said he would relish the opportunity to face Madrid again.

“I want to play Madrid, I have to be honest,” Salah told BT Sport.

“City is a really tough team. We played against them a few times this season.”

But I think, if you ask me personally, I prefer Madrid, because we lost in the final [to them], so I want to play against them and hopefully we will win it.”

Salah, who provided the assist for Fabinho’s crucial goal early in the second half against Villarreal, felt Liverpool’s comeback in Spain underlined their strong mentality.

“It was tough in the first half but then we went to the dressing room. The gaffer talked and we talked to each other as well.

That shows character and personality in the dressing room. It shows that we are a top team. That’s why we can strike back after losing 2-0 in the first half. I think it makes the win more exciting.”

Asked if he is motivated by the possibility of winning the Quadruple, he added: “For sure. Maybe not at the beginning of the season because I always focus on the Premier League and the Champions League but now we are close for everything, so why not?”

The 22-year-old, who has won five senior international caps with Argentina, will remain with River on loan at least until July 2022.

Director of football Txiki Begiristain said Premier League leaders City had signed a player with significant potential.

He said “Julian is a player we have monitored for some time, he is capable of operating in a number of attacking roles, and we firmly believe he’s one of the best young attacking players in South America. I am so happy we have managed to bring him to Manchester City. I really believe we can provide him with the right conditions to fulfil his potential and become a top player.”

Alvarez made his senior international debut in a World Cup qualifier against Chile in June last year and was part of the squad that won the Copa America in July.

Mendy, 27, who has been in custody for around seven weeks, was denied bail by Judge Patrick Thompson at a 50-minute hearing at Chester Crown Court, from which the media was excluded.

The defendant, who was not in court, is being held on remand at HMP Altcourse, Liverpool. It was the third bail application Mendy had made. He is yet to enter pleas to the charges of four counts of rape and one of sexual assault.

The alleged attacks, on three different women including one under 18, none of whom can be identified, are said to have happened at his home address on Withinlee Road in Prestbury, Cheshire.

Mendy was charged on August 26 with three counts of rape relating to an alleged incident in October 2020 and with the sexual assault of a woman in early January this year. He is also charged with raping a woman in August.

A trial date has been set for January 24, 2021. Mendy was suspended by City after being charged by police, pending a club investigation.

The 27-year-old, who is charged with four counts of rape and one count of sexual assault against three people, was told by guards he would be placed in the VP wing for vulnerable prisoners after he arrived at HMP Altcourse in Liverpool on Friday August 27. However, he was left heartbroken after he discovered he wasn’t going to be locked up in a VIP wing for celebrity figures.

A source told The Sun: ‘When Mendy arrived staff explained he was going to be kept on the VP wing for his own safety.’

They added: ‘He had a rude awakening when he saw the cell and realised who he was going to be mixing with.

‘He wasn’t happy and it was a very sobering experience for him.’

The French footballer who plays at left-back for the Premier League champions, was last week charged with four counts of rape and one count of sexual assault against three people last week.

He was immediately suspended by his club pending an investigation.

A Man City spokesman said: ‘Manchester City can confirm that, following his being charged by police, Benjamin Mendy has been suspended pending an investigation. The matter is subject to a legal process and the club is therefore unable to make further comment until that process is complete.’

Mendy will appear at Chester crown court on September 10.

Mendy has also been suspended by Manchester City, the club announced last night. Sportsmail revealed in November that a Premier League star had been arrested on suspicion of rape, but was unable to reveal his identity for legal reasons.

Mendy, who earns £90,000 a week and lives in a £5million mansion in Prestbury, an upmarket village near Manchester popular with fellow players, was part of France’s World Cup-winning squad in 2018.

The England Centre-back was an integral part of the City squad as they reclaimed the league title last season, while his form earned him a recall to the England set-up.

Stones started every match as England reached the Euro 2020 final, while at City he made 35 appearances in all competitions in 2020-21.
