The United boss is refusing to back down in his stand-off with Sancho, who has been banished from the first-team squad for calling Ten Hag a liar after he was dropped from last month’s defeat at Arsenal due to a poor attitude in training.

According to Mail Sport, Ten Hag has highlighted Sancho’s influence on other players as a cause for concern.

The Dutchman is understood to have told the club that the attitude of other players in training has improved since Sancho was exiled, with their team spirit reflected in Saturday’s dramatic injury-time win over Brentford despite a patchy performance.

Ten Hag is demanding that Sancho make both a public apology and say sorry in front of his teammates before he can return to the squad, a stance which has the full backing of his employers, but five weeks after, he is yet to apologise.

United are so eager to offload Sancho in January that they are willing to subsidize his £300,000-a-week wages if they are able to agree a loan move for the rest of the season.

The Red Devils have lost four of their first six matches in all competitions, leaving the Dutch manager with a major task on his hands just over a month into the new campaign.

United travel to face struggling Burnley on Saturday languishing in 13th place in the Premier League — they have lost 18 of their past 35 away matches in all competitions.

“It’s my second year,” said Ten Hag, whose team last season finished third in the table and ended a six-year trophy drought.

“I know it’s not always only going up — you will have your gaps and you get stronger from it as long as you stay together, and that’s what we’re doing.

“The dressing room, staff, all the staff, coaches, medical, everyone is united and at United you fight.”

Stories of disgruntlement in the dressing room have begun to emerge while the attitude of players has also been questioned.

Ten Hag tried to paint a positive picture at his pre-match press conference, saying: “I don’t know if it’s a leak but I know the opinion(s), I know my players. Everyone can make suggestions, we are okay with it.”

United’s poor form has made the trip to Burnley a high-pressure occasion, and they will again be without Jadon Sancho, who remains absent from the squad after a spat with the manager.

It is unclear whether the former Borussia Dortmund winger will play for the club again.

“It depends on him,” said Ten Hag. “For the rest, we are preparing for Burnley and that’s our focus. He will not be in the squad.”

United have been badly hit by injuries. Raphael Varane, Mason Mount, Sofyan Amrabat and Harry Maguire were set to train ahead of the match at Turf Moor but Ten Hag was cautious when asked if they would be available.

Central to United’s problems has been a lack of defensive solidity, with 14 goals conceded in their past five games.

Goalkeeper Andre Onana held his hands up after making a mistake for Bayern’s first goal in the 4-3 Champions League defeat this week, but Ten Hag believes the problems are collective.

“It’s about the team and, as a team, we don’t have the results at this moment so then also individuals don’t bring the performance you expect, not only one player, there are more, including the manager,” he said.

“I always tell my players we attack with 11 and we defend with 11. When one or two are not doing their job, it’s like a pack of cards, so that is not only one or two players.”

The forward made this known in a statement today after news broke that he will be parting ways with Manchester United.

His former club Ajax announced in a statement on social media this afternoon that  van der Sar was currently in hospital in a “stable condition” after suffering from bleeding on the brain.

Although no further details were given by Ajax, PA Media said van der Sar, 52, was admitted to a hospital while away in Croatia after suffering a cerebral haemorrhage.

The England international had a frustrating and disappointing 2021/22 campaign, dropped by Gareth Southgate from the national team amid a form dip at the Old Trafford club.

But he has been working hard over the English summer and, injury free, is on his first full pre-season tour since breaking into the senior Red Devils squad.

“For me, it’s a fresh start and something I’m looking forward to,” he said in Melbourne ahead of their tour game against Melbourne Victory after a 4-0 win over Liverpool in Bangkok this week.

“I’m in a good place right now. I’m just looking forward to getting more games under my belt.”

The good place comes is courtesy of a rare, prolonged summer break with no international duty.

“It’s been a bit unnatural for me to have such a long break in the summer, just under four weeks and I could have a break physically and mentally,” said the 24-year-old.

It’s massive to have a full pre-season. This is the first year I’ve been with the team from the beginning and I already feel a lot better.

“I think the first two-and-a-half weeks of training have been good, we’re (United) a lot fitter than we were last season and also we’re making mistakes along the way so we have a lot of room for improvement.”

Asked about his confidence after a season in which United finished a disappointing sixth in the Premier League, Rashford said it was never easy playing on an underperforming team.

“I always say to myself it’s a lot easier to make mistakes in a team that’s winning,” he said.

United finished in sixth place this past season and have just gone five years without winning any silverware.

Ten Hag believes United are better than the league position this past season suggested, adding: “Also know one year ago, this club, this team was second in the Premier League. There’s potential and now it’s up to us to get that out. It’s a process, it will take time but I’m convinced we will come to that point where we get success. We have to work hard and it has to be based on the right philosophy and strategy.”
