Mexican mayor, three others found dead in vehicle

A mayor in Mexico’s central San Luis Potosi state, who was a member of the ruling Morena party, was shot dead on Sunday along with three other people, local authorities said.

Jesus Eduardo Franco, mayor of Tancanhuitz municipality, and the three other victims were all found dead inside a vehicle, according to the state prosecutor’s office.”We deeply regret the death of our colleague Eduardo Franco, municipal president of Tancanhuitz,” Morena party president Rita Rodriguez wrote on X.“We ask authorities to reach the ultimate consequences and find those responsible,” she added.

Dozens of local officials have been targeted in organised crime-related violence that has plagued Mexico in recent years.

Local media reported last month that Alejandro Arcos, a mayor in southern Guerrero state, was decapitated less than a week after taking office and his head placed on top of a pickup truck.

More than 450,000 people have been murdered and thousands have gone missing since the Mexican government deployed the army to combat drug trafficking in 2006, according to official figures.

FIFA unveils 16 cities for 2026 World Cup co-hosted by Canada, Mexico and USA

FIFA have announced the cities that would host the 2026 World Cup in United States, Mexico and Canada.

The 2026 showpiece will be the first World Cup co-hosted by three countries, and will also be the first World Cup to host 48 nations.

According to the world football governing body, 11 of the approved cities are in the United States, which will host 60 games, while Canada has two and Mexico has three. Canada and Mexico will both host ten games each.

Korea Republic and Japan were the first countries to co-host a FIFA World Cup in 2002.

US border wall falls into Mexico

A portion of the newly erected US border wall fell into Mexico on Wednesday January 29, after high winds in the afternoon.

Though no one was injured in the incident, it was however learnt that panel from the wall located at Calexico, California broke free from their concrete foundation which was yet to set in, before leaning against trees adjacent to Mexicali, Mexico.

US Customs and Border Protection Agent Carlos Pitones said the sections which fell off had recently been set in a new concrete foundation

Mexico finds migrants in half of inspected trains

Mexican officials on Thursday said authorities have found migrants riding on about half of the trains inspected in the country since June.

While the largest number of migrants were detained while walking — 41,649 between June and Dec. 22 — many migrants walk along tracks hoping to hop onto a passing train.

About 2,800 migrants were found hidden in trucks, and almost 3,500 were detained aboard buses.

The government presented figures on its crackdown on migrants, which started in May.

So far in 2019, Mexico has detained 178,917 migrants, mainly Central Americans, and deported 84,327.

In the first 11 months of 2019, Mexico has received nearly 67,000 asylum claims, more than double what it received in all of 2018.

Mexico’s ambassador to Argentina resigns after being caught shoplifting

Mexico’s ambassador to Argentina who was caught on camera trying to steal a book from a bookstore in October has resigned, blaming years long health problems that stemmed from a brain tumor, officials said.

Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador on Monday called the case “painful” and “sad.”

Officials said late Sunday that Ambassador Óscar Ricardo Valero, 77, had resigned for health reasons. Mexico’s Foreign Relations Secretary Marcelo Ebrard wrote on Twitter that Valero “is undergoing neurological treatment.”

He also described Valero, a career diplomat with a long pedigree in Mexico’s left, as “a great person.”

Mexican news media reported that Valero allegedly also tried to steal a T-shirt from an airport shop after he was called back to Mexico in early December.

At the request of relatives, Ebrard’s office published a doctor’s letter saying Valero had been diagnosed with a brain tumor in 2012 that resulted in “behavioral changes.”

Iowa woman ran down girl because victim was ‘a Mexican

“During the interview, Franklin not only admitted to being the driver of the car that struck this girl but also that she had done so intentionally,” Venema said. “Franklin told investigators that she ran the girl over because she was, in her words, ‘a Mexican.’”

“She went on to make a number of derogatory statements about Latinos to the investigators,” he added.

Franklin was charged with attempted murder, Venema said.

“I want to say in the strongest terms possible that there is no place in our community or any other for this type of hatred or violence,” the chief said.

Franklin was accused of driving her SUV onto the girl on a sidewalk as the girl was walking to school to watch a basketball game.

“I don’t remember the impact,” the teenager told a Des Moines TV station days later. “I just remember the car coming at me.”

Franklin was behind bars after being charged with assaulting a Des Moines convenience store clerk with racist remarks.

Shooting near Mexican president’s residence leaves 4 dead

Four people were shot to death in the Mexican capital Saturday, just steps from an entrance to the official residence of the president, authorities said.

Officials said a man entered an apartment building near the National Palace seeking to urinate in the courtyard and was confronted by residents. He pulled out a gun and began shooting, hitting five people, officials said.

A police officer killed the shooter, while three of the building residents died, authorities said. Two more residents were wounded.

The surrounding area was packed with holiday shoppers.

Residents who declined to give their names said their street in the capital’s historic centre is far from safe, despite being a stone’s throw from the National Palace. President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador moved into the palace when he took office a year ago, turning the former presidential residence in Chapultepec Park into a museum.

Mexican families of El Paso shooting victims sue Walmart

Walmart re-opened its El Paso, TX store nearly three months after a gunman killed 22 people and injured dozens more in August.

Mexican citizens whose relatives were victims in the Aug. 3 mass shooting at a Walmart in El Paso, Texas, have filed a lawsuit against the store chain.

Mexico’s Foreign Relations Department said Wednesday it is assisting the 10 Mexican plaintiffs in the suit, filed in El Paso.

The lawsuit, presented in El Paso County Wednesday, is intended to hold Walmart “responsible for not taking reasonable and necessary measures to protect its customers from the attack at the Cielo Vista branch in El Paso, Texas,” according to the department’s website.

It did not say what damages the lawsuit seeks, nor how many of the plaintiffs were wounded victims, or relatives of those killed.

Eight Mexicans were among the 22 people killed in the shooting; eight other Mexicans were wounded. Police have said Patrick Crusius of Dallas confessed to the shooting and that he targeted Mexicans.

The El Paso Walmart reopened its doors last week, nearly three months after the massacre.

Man charged with raping woman, and killing two in Mexico

A Florida man was charged with raping a woman and later admitted to killing a man and woman in Mexico, according to the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office.

Omar Navis Torres, 39, who the victim says has a “crack and alcohol addiction,” allegedly beat the unnamed woman before sexually assaulting her.

He later admitted to killing a man and woman in Mexico, according to the arrest report.

Officers responded to a location in Manatee County on Oct. 30, in reference to a past physical dispute, when they made contact with Torres and the victim.

Torres allegedly threw the woman onto the bed, hitting her in the face multiple times after he told her she wasn’t good for anything but sex.

The victim told police he forced himself on her and that she only stopped resisting after realizing he wouldn’t stop hitting her until she complied, according to the report.

Police say Torres allegedly controlled the victim with fear, saying multiple times that if she sought help from law enforcement he would kill her and if Torres was unable to find her — he would come after her family, kill them and then take his own life.

Those reasons kept the woman from reaching out to the police, but after another aggressive encounter, the victim called 911 due to fears for her own safety, according to the arrest report.

The victim told police that Torres was “very aggressive” and that he punched her in the nose — causing it to bleed — following a verbal argument a couple of days ago.

Police arranged for a rape kit to be administered on the victim, while Torres was booked into the Manatee County jail on Oct. 31 and remains in custody on a $35,000 bond, according to the Bradenton Herald.

Republican Party plans to return to California in 2020

Trump 2020 campaign director Brad Parscale insisted on Saturday that the Republican Party had not withdrawn from California despite setbacks in the 2018 polls.

“We have the potential to win eight seats in Congress, back to Republicans here in California,” Parscale said at the Republican party’s autumn convention in Indian Wells.

But Parscale acknowledged that the work would not be easy and said the work should be done by the Golden State Republicans, not the national party leaders.

“You’re the California Republican Party,” he said, according to Politico. “I can’t do any tricks on my laptop that you can’t. You have to work hard and talk to your neighbors. And with a strong leader with President Trump at the front, the sky is the limit.”

Democrats defeated the California Republican Party in last year’s polls, leaving Republicans only seven of the 53 state seats in the US House. California’s two Senate seats also belong to the Democrats.

However, Parscale told convention attendees on Saturday that Trump’s reelection campaign envisioned a major effort in California, with no less than 50 paid staff, making it one of the “biggest polling day operations” in the country. state history, the politician reported.
