A 24-year-old man was sentenced Tuesday to life in prison without parole for running over and killing a sheriff’s deputy in southeastern Michigan in 2017, according to a report.

Christopher Berak was convicted last month for first-degree murder and the murder of a police officer, Fox 2 Detroit reported.

“I’m sorry for what I did. I hope that they’re all doing OK,” Berak had said before sentencing, per the news outlet.

Berak was accused of leading Lapeer County deputies on a car chase and deliberately hitting the cop at an intersection.

Deputy Eric Overall, 50, a 22-year veteran of the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office, was hit outside his car on Thanksgiving 2017 while deploying “stop sticks” to deflate Berak’s tires.

Berak’s car rolled over, and he was arrested.

Berak’s defense said he had no intention of striking the deputy and was reacting to the stop sticks on the road.

Earlier in the day, Berak had told authorities at the Lapeer County jail he was “God” and came to break out one of his “sons.”

“He was a man of honor and integrity. On and off duty, he always strived to do the right thing. … Eric had a big heart and wore it on his sleeve,” Overall’s wife, Sonya, said about her husband at the sentencing this week.

“My father impacted so many lives, like Sonya just said — raised me and my brother up to be the best men we could be,” the cop’s son, Kenneth Overall, said. “My father was a great man, always selfless. That Thanksgiving morning, it will be a day we’ll never forget. Every morning, every day we relive it.”

“We wish we had him back,” he added.

A Michigan man wielded an ax he calls ‘his baby’ to fend off a convicted criminal who tried to break into his apartment on Wednesday night.

Ben Ball, 36, used a replica battle-ax to chop through the intruder, 33-year-old Alex Lavell Rawls, who is facing a charge of first-degree home invasion.

Ball says the suspect dated his former roommate, but she moved away to distance herself from the convicted felon. Rawls showed up at the apartment at 11:30 p.m. thinking she was still there, according to Wood TV.

He repeatedly knocked on the door before kicking it in while Ball was sitting at home playing video games and watching the TV show, Rick and Morty. Ball says he believed Rawls was carrying a firearm, the outlet reported.

When the door opened, he decided to go medieval.

“[The] door opened, [I] grabbed the ax, [then] step, step, hit,” he told Wood TV.

He struck Rawls at least once in the torso with the sharp blade before the two continued to fight in the apartment.

“There was a bloody mess everywhere,” Ball said.

A professor in Michigan has been charged with manslaughter in the March accidental drowning death of his 16-year-old autistic son.

Investigators said the boy, Sam Koets, drowned after climbing into an above-ground pool with icy water in the backyard of a Georgetown Township, Mich., home where he lived with his parents and siblings, according to reports.

“There are facts in this case that I think the public will find disturbing,” said Capt. Mark Bennett of the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office, according to MLive.com.

Timothy Koets, 50, was accused Friday of failing to supervise his son who investigators said had been left alone in the backyard, Fox 17 Grand Rapids reported.

Investigators found the boy, who had severe autism, in the pool unresponsive with his arms bound, the station reported.

Koets teaches computer science at Grand Rapids Community College, according to the station.

He was released on bail Friday after a not guilty plea was entered on his behalf by a judge, MLive.com reported.

Koets, who was also charged with child abuse, told the judge he wasn’t going to flee.

“I’m not a risk at all,” he said, according to the news outlet. “I’m not going to run or anything.”

Investigators also said Sam had been living in the home in deplorable conditions that included sleeping in the basement on a soiled mattress, Fox 17 reported.

A 12-year-old Michigan boy is suffering from severe burns after partaking in the “fire challenge” — and his mother is speaking out in an effort to warn other parents.

Jason Cleary, of Dearborn Heights, was playing with a friend on Sept. 28 when his mother, Tabitha Cleary, heard screaming.

“So we came running out. That’s when we saw his friend Bryce riding him on the bike with no shirt on,” Cleary told WDIV-TV. “I start to freak out. ‘Take him to the hospital, take him to the hospital.’ I’m crying. He’s crying.”

She said the 12-year-old boy suffered burns on his chin, chest and stomach after he was sprayed with nail polish remover and lit on fire — part of a so-called “social media challenge” in which children light each other on fire.

Whoops! We couldn’t access this Tweet.

Jason told the news outlet the first time he was set on fire, the flame “was little, and they swatted if off.” But on the second time, “they kept spraying it (nail polish remover) on me.”

The boy isn’t the first child to participate in this dangerous craze. A 12-year-old girl in Detroit was left with 49 percent of her body burned in August 2018 after playing the challenge.

Her mother told WJBK at the time that the girl was hanging out with two friends at her house when she became “engulfed in flames” after apparently mimicking a video she saw on YouTube.

Another child, 13-year-old Miyah Landers, was also burned around the same time, after accidentally being lit on fire by a friend.

Jason’s mother is trying to warn parents about much challenges — and urging them to monitor their children.

“I just want everybody to know that these challenges, or whatever they are watching on YouTube, is not worth your risking your life,” Cleary said. “I mean, my son got burns second-degree and could have been way, way worse.”

The United States Education Department is fining Michigan State University a record $4.5 million and demanding sweeping changes after determining that it failed to respond to sexual assault complaints against Larry Nassar, a former sports doctor at the school who also worked at USA Gymnastics.

Education Secretary Betsy DeVos announced the penalty Thursday after the school settled with the department to resolve two investigations. DeVos said that Nassar’s actions were “disgusting and unimaginable” but that so too was the university’s response.

“Too many people in power knew about the behaviors and the complaints and yet the predators continued on the payroll and abused even more students,” DeVos said in a call with reporters. “This must not happen again there or anywhere else.”

The fine is the largest levied under the Clery Act, a federal law that requires colleges to collect data on campus crime and notify students of threats. The previous largest fine, $2.4 million, was imposed in 2016 against Pennsylvania State University over its handling of sexual misconduct involving former assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky.

The department’s investigation concluded that Michigan State violated several key parts of the Clery Act along with Title IX, a federal law forbidding discrimination based on gender in education.

Michigan State did not immediately provide comment.

A department investigation found that Michigan State violated the Clery Act by failing to disclose crime statistics, failing to issue campus warnings about security threats and failing to establish a system to collect crime statistics. As a remedy, the school says it will hire a “Clery compliance officer” and create measures to protect athletes and children who participate in youth programs on campus.

A separate Title IX investigation found that Michigan State failed to respond to reports of sexual misconduct against Nassar and his supervisor William Strampel, failed to take interim measures to protect students while complaints against both men were pending, and failed to take steps to end any harassment and prevent it from recurring.

Close to a dozen illegal immigrants, including a man previously convicted of drug charges, were apprehended by Border Patrol agents in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan on Monday, according to reports.

The arrests came after agents in Munising stopped a van, mlive.com reported. The driver and nine passengers admitted they were in the United States illegally and were taken to the Border Patrol station in Sault Ste. Marie.

The agents discovered during processing that four of those men had been removed from the U.S. One of them, Jose Bernal-Medeles of Mexico, was convicted of drug charges in both Minnesota and Wisconsin and had been deported three times, WWJ reported.

“Today the men and women of the United States Border Patrol made Munising safer by removing a convicted illegal alien drug dealer and nine others from the streets,” said Sault Ste. Marie Acting Patrol Agent in Charge Andrew Halonen.

Bernal-Medeles and the three other men who had been deported were turned over to the custody of Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) Enforcement and Removal Operations. The remaining men were being held pending further proceedings, mlive.com reported.

A Michigan man is currently in jail for allegedly running someone over with his vehicle — over a $140 debt.

Ryan Joseph Philipps, aged 23, was apprehended just after witnesses claimed that he drove onto a front lawn in Menominee Township on Friday and purposely hit Devon Scott Barley, 23, with his SUV and fled the scene, WLUC-TV reported.

Investigators claim that the event occurred because Philipps was upset about a $140 debt.

Barley was taken to the hospital and suffered a broken femur, broken ribs, multiple traumatic wounds and a bruised lung, according to the report. As of Monday, he remained in intensive care.

Philipps reportedly turned himself in to authorities on Sunday. He was charged with assault with intent to murder and attempted murder, and was being held at the Menominee County Jail on $250,000 cash or surety bond.

A chain of some powerful thunderstorms over the weekend across the upper Midwest may have given a reprieve from the heat wave gripping the eastern half the country, where hundreds of thousands across Michigan and also Wisconsinare without power while residents clean upthe damage.

The thunderstorms brought hurricane-force wind gusts in two rounds on Friday night and Saturday from South Dakota into southern Minnesota, with a separate cluster of storms stretching across Wisconsin and into Michigan.

“I was so scared, I really thought I was going to die,” Lisa Gast told FOX11.

Gast, who was driving from work to her home in Mountain when the first round of storms moved through, said in her 20 years living in the community about 65 miles northwest of Green Bay she’s never experienced a storm like the one Friday night.

“I wanted to get home to my family,” she said.

As of Sunday morning, more than 564,000 power outages were reported in Wisconsin and Michigan as a result of the severe weather, according to poweroutage.us.

The vast majority of outages were reported in Michigan, where DTE Energy said 375,000 customers were without power as of 6 a.m. on Sunday due to the two waves of severe weather that moved through southeast Michigan Friday and Saturday.

“I know it is very hard and inconvenient to live without power any time, but especially in today’s record heat levels,” spokesperson Heather Rivard told FOX2.
