Governor Bala Mohammed has described MKO Abiola, a self-acclaimed winner of the June 12, 1993, presidential election, as “the most acceptable democrat” in Nigeria.

Speaking in Gamawa LGA of the state during the distribution of empowerment items to youths and women under the Kaura Economic Empowerment Programme (KEEP), Bala said Abiola empowered several people across the board without considering religion, language and origin of those that benefited from the gestures.

The Governor said “Our launching of this empowerment programme today is historic and passionate; we remember today is democracy day and we decided to do it on this day.  This is because Chief Moshood Abiola, who we are celebrating, empowered several people. He did that across the board without considering the religion, language and origin of those that benefited from the gestures. Abiola will remain in our memory as the most acceptable democrat or politician in Nigeria. We all voted for him and that is why myself, my deputy and the government decided to honour him this day by coming to Gamawa and Zaki to empower the people.”

An N100m lawsuit has been filed against the police by Kassim and Aliyu Abiola, two children of the late Nigerian politician MKO Abiola.

Abiola’s children in the lawsuit filed on their behalf by Mike Ozekhome, a senior advocate of Nigeria (SAN), alleged that their stepmother Adebisi Abiola accused them of being involved in the recent robbery incident at their father’s house and also got them arrested.

Kassim and Aliyu also alleged that they were tortured, totally humiliated, dehumanised and terrorised with a crowd of people swarming the premises to witness the ugly scene. Ozekhome asked the court to ”order the release of the two late politician’s children as their arrest was a violation of their fundamental human right.”

An affidavit filed in support of the suit read “The applicants were tortured, totally humiliated, dehumanised and terrorised, with a crowd of people swarming the premises to witness the ugly scene in the home of MKO Abiola, a former presidential aspirant of the Social Democratic Party.  The applicants were informed that their arrest was based on an alleged complaint by one Mrs Adebisi Abiola, their stepmother, to the effect that a robbery incident took place in their home; that suspected armed men invaded the residence and carted away valuables, including money. The applicants were forcibly dragged like common criminals, more in form of abduction than arrest and roughly driven to the Ikeja police station. They were promptly detained without any record, howsoever. They were not given any opportunity to speak with anyone, let alone a lawyer.”
