The Senate on Tuesday asked the Federal Government to review its policy which made it compulsory for prospective candidates wishing to write examinations being conducted by the Joint Admissions and Matriculations Board to obtain the National Identification Number.

The Senate resolution followed the adoption of a motion moved on the issue by Senator Ifeanyi Ubah at plenary.

The red chamber, specifically, urged the Federal Ministry of Education, the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, and the National Identity Management Commission to review the implementation of the policy.

The Senate noted that the review of the policy was with a view to extending the JAMB registration deadline and requirements until there is a seamless and well-organised process for obtaining the NIN.

The Senate also urged the Federal Ministry of Education and NIMC to introduce and streamline a simple and decentralised NIN registration process.

The upper chamber said students should be able to obtain their NIN in their various accredited school’s premises.

JAMB had earlier extended registration for the annual Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination till Saturday, May 29.

The Minister of State for Health, Olorunnimbe Mamora, has said that the Federal government may suspend the ongoing National Identification Number (NIN) due to the large crowds which pose COVID-19 risks.

Mamora, who is also a member of the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19, said this when he appeared on Channels Television today January 11.

He said “Nobody feels good; I don’t feel good looking at the picture where people are gathered in multitude. It’s like a super spreader event which we don’t like. I’m also aware that the relevant ministry which is the communications and digital economy is looking at this. My understanding is that the whole process may be suspended so as to reorder the whole process in terms of management of the crowd because it was never intended that it would become a rowdy process like that. So, people may have to wait and be called at intervals to go through the process”

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has announced that the National Identification Number (NIN) is now compulsory for car registration and issuance of the driver’s licence.

Dr Boboye Oyeyemi, Corps Marshal, FRSC disclosed this at a workshop organised for sector heads of the driver’s licence on Friday in Abuja.

According to him, the action became imperative in order to stop corruption, lamenting that FRSC has been faced with a lot of problems in respect to the production of the driver’s licence.

Oyeyemi said that there was need to improve the production of the driver’s licence, adding that the driver’s licence is not just a permit or an authorisation to drive a vehicle on Nigerian roads, but also a highly valued identification and security document.

“It is useful for identity tracking, especially when it involves travelling and driving outside the country.

“As a matter of fact, it also offers support to the different agencies who desire to keep a tab on the identity of holders, including the diplomatic community,” Boboye said.

According to him, the new directive is in line with the direction of the government to guard against practices that are inimical to the sustenance.

He reiterated that the decision is to curb corruption in the driver’s licence production chain.

Oyeyemi, added that the same would apply to vehicle registration, stressing that Nigeria was experiencing challenges relating to identity theft like many countries, NAN reports.

“Without a NIN, you cannot continue any vehicle registration. This is also to ensure that the correct information is provided and kick against corruption,” the FRSC boss added.

He added that the directive is important for the FRSC to avoid double identity and ease the processing of the driver’s licence as well.
