Nigeria is eyeing smart city development through strategic partnerships with the United States.

A smart city is an urban area that uses advanced technology and data analytics to improve the quality of life for its citizens, enhance sustainability, and streamline public services.

Smart cities integrate information and communication technologies to manage and govern the city’s infrastructure, services, and resources.

NASRDA’s Director of Media and Corporate Communications, Dr. Felix Ale, disclosed this in a statement on Thursday.

The Director-General of the National Space Research and Development Agency, Dr. Matthew Adepoju, underscored this during the ongoing Nigerian Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture and Global Africa Business Alliance Trade Mission in Michigan, United States.

“The Nigeria Space Programme is all-embracing, with a strong focus on the socio-economic development of the country,” Adepoju stated.

He emphasised the agency’s commitment to leveraging space technology for national progress.

His participation in this trade mission aims to foster essential business connections and collaboration between Africa and Michigan.

The trade mission, described as a “historic event” by the Director-General, serves as a unique platform for exploring future collaborations.

Adepoju highlighted the relevance of NASRDA’s activities within the context of the blue economy, asserting that “the potential benefits for the great people of Nigeria and humanity at large are immense.”

The Nigerian delegation, led by the president of NACCIMA, was warmly received by the Mayor of Monroe, Mr. Robert Clark.

The Port of Monroe has emerged as a hub for economic growth, attracting industrial developments such as wind energy and lithium battery production.

This sets the stage for potential partnerships that could bolster Nigeria’s technological and infrastructural advancements.

At the Detroit Port Authority, discussions focused on integrating blue economy initiatives with space technology, emphasising maritime domain awareness.

We are committed to taking NASRDA to greater heights,” Adepoju affirmed, reiterating his dedication to realising the Nigeria space agenda during his tenure.

The conference also featured presentations on investment opportunities in smart city development and tech hubs, areas where Nigeria seeks to forge robust partnerships.

Adepoju’s active role in these discussions signals Nigeria’s strategic interest in harnessing American expertise to build sustainable, technologically advanced urban environments.

He noted that, as Nigeria positions itself at the forefront of smart city development through these international collaborations, the outcomes of this trade mission could significantly influence the nation’s trajectory in technological innovation and economic growth.
