His former club Ajax announced in a statement on social media this afternoon that  van der Sar was currently in hospital in a “stable condition” after suffering from bleeding on the brain.

In the statement, Ajax said: “On Friday, Edwin van der Sar has had a bleeding around his brain.

“He’s currently in hospital in the intensive care unit and is in a stable condition.

“Once there is more concrete information, an update will follow.

“Everyone at Ajax wishes Edwin a speedy recovery. We’re thinking of you.”

Although no further details were given by Ajax, PA Media said van der Sar, 52, was admitted to a hospital while away in Croatia after suffering a cerebral haemorrhage.

Van der Sar played 186 games for Manchester United from 2005 to 2011 and made 226 appearances for Ajax from 1990 to 1999.

Prime Minister Mark Rutte plans to give a speech on slavery at the National Archives in The Hague later in the day.

The cabinet representatives are also scheduled to speak in the former Dutch colony of Suriname in South America as well as on the six Caribbean islands that still belong to the Dutch kingdom today.

The Netherlands was once the third largest colonial power in the world and enslaved an estimated 500,000 people for over 200 years.

They were mostly abducted from West Africa, sold and forced to work on the plantations in Suriname and the Antilles.

The Dutch kingdom was one of the last countries in Europe to officially abolish slavery on July 1, 1863, but the actual end came only in 1873.

Descendants of slaves and inhabitants of the colonies especially, had at that time, campaigned for an apology for years but Prime Minister Rutte’s government refused to do so.

Meanwhile, the debate about coming to terms with the past was rekindled by the Black Lives Matter movement in the United States.

A government-appointed commission declared in July that the Netherlands had to apologise and actively work to combat the consequences, such as racism.

According to them “slavery is a crime against humanity and the state has to recognise for the historical injustice.’’

The Netherlands have reappointed Louis van Gaal as their manager on a contract until the end of 2022.

Van Gaal is taking up the role as Netherlands boss for a third time, having previously led his country from 2000 to 2001 and from 2012 to 2014.

The 69-year-old will oversee the side’s bid to qualify for the 2022 World Cup, with his contract running until the end of the tournament in Qatar.

Van Gaal told the Dutch FA’s website: “Dutch football has always been close to my heart and national coaching is in my view a key position for the further advancement of our football. Moreover, I consider it an honour to coach the Dutch national team. There is little time for the next qualifying matches, which are immediately crucial for participation in the World Cup.

“The focus is therefore immediately 100 per cent on the players and the approach. After all, I was appointed for that. It is good to be back. By now I have already spoken to a number of players and the technical staff has been put together. I am very much looking forward to getting the job done together.”

Van Gaal replaces Frank de Boer, who left his role following the Netherlands’ shock defeat to the Czech Republic in the last 16 of Euro 2020 this summer.

Van Gaal led the Netherlands to third place in the 2014 World Cup, with their impressive run including a 3-0 win over Brazil and a 5-1 thrashing of then-world champions Spain.

The National Research Council (NRC) Handelsblad which collaborated with Lost in Europe in its June 2020 report, said the Central Agency for the Reception of Asylum Seekers (COA) identified a significant number of the cases.

Reacting to the investigative group’s findings, Shamir Ceuleers of the Dutch Centre Against Human and Child Trafficking says the results are not surprising because they follow a pattern that has been going on for years.

Ceuleers said “The Dutch police should create a specific West African human trafficking unit, which invests in knowledge and expertise and is well connected to the West African community that we have here in the Netherlands. And by using this and creating this expertise, the Dutch police would be well equipped to prosecute these trafficking rings. Within Europe, it’s essential to work together and to exchange experiences but also exchange data of the missing children and women and men. So if they disappear and pop up somewhere in conditions considered human trafficking, they can easily be identified. I think that’s really essential, and to give them the protection they need”.

The Government of Nigeria is restricting entry into the country for travelers from China, Italy, Iran, South Korea, Spain, Japan, France, Germany, the United States of America, Norway, the United Kingdom, Netherlands & Switzerland.

The Federal Government is temporarily suspending all visas issued to nationals from these countries. Nigerians arriving from these countries will be subjected to supervised isolation for 14 days.

The Government is also advising all Nigerians to avoid travel to these countries. These restrictions will come into effect from Friday 20 March 2020, for 4 weeks, subject to review.

The Netherlands stabbing took place in The Hague’s main shopping street, which was bustling with holiday shoppers, according to police. The motive is unknown at this time.

Authorities said they were searching for at least one suspect. The Hague police said in an earlier statement that they were looking for a man in a grey jogging suit who was about 45 to 50 years old.

Additional details were not immediately available. Police spokeswoman Marije Kuiper told The Associated Press it’s unclear if the incident was an act of terrorism and it’s too early to determine a motive for the attack.

Kuiper also said it’s unclear whether any of the injuries were life-threatening.

A similar stabbing took place in Amsterdam a year ago, when two Americans were injured in a knife attack that prosecutors said had a “terrorist motive.”

As of the time of publication, it was also unknown if the Friday attack had any relationship to the earlier stabbing in London, which authorities say is being treated as a terrorist attack.
