The Nigeria Medical Association (NMA) has said that only 24, 000 actively licensed physicians are remaining in the country following a recent brain drain.

NMA President, Ojinmah Uche who disclosed this during a policy dialogue on Nigeria’s health sector brain drain and its implications for sustainable child and family health service delivery, said the 24,000 actively licensed physicians are taking care of Nigeria’s over 200 million population.

Speaking at the event organised by the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies in collaboration with the Partnership for Advancing Child and Family Health at Scale project of the development Research and Projects Centre (dRPC), Ojinmah noted that based on the World Health Organisation established minimum threshold, a country needs a mix of 23 doctors, nurses and midwives per 10,000 population to deliver essential maternal and child health services.

He added; “Only one doctor is incredibly available to treat 30,000 patients in some states in the South; while states in the North are as worse as one doctor to 45,000 patients. In some rural areas, patients have to travel more than 30 kilometers from their abodes to get medical attention where available thus Nigeria making access to healthcare a rarity.”

Ojinmah further blamed the brain drain on poor funding of the health sector, stressful medical education, non-existent house job slots, difficulty in gaining employment, poor remuneration, unnecessary and unhealthy inter-professional rivalry, insecurity, among others.

As the country’s COVID-19 infections continue to increase, the Kwara State branch of the Nigeria Medical Association has said that in order to curb the spread of the pandemic, Nigerians must stop paying unnecessary visits or consultations to hospitals.

It said 35 doctors had so far been tested positive for COVID-19 since the virus manifested in the state.

The NMA Chairman, Dr Kolade Solagberu, disclosed this while briefing newsmen on Monday in Ilorin on events heralding the association’s 2020 Annual General Meeting

Solagberu, however, noted that the association had not recorded any casualty among its members.

He cautioned residents to disregard the beliefs that COVID-19 was not real and was only a money-making avenue for the government.

”Residents should help the doctors to help them by not paying unnecessary visits or consultations to hospitals.

”For now, people should avoid visiting the hospital except for life-threatening issues.

”We advise people to engage in e-health service instead of physical consultation to avoid contact as much as possible.

”People should stop unnecessary visits to patients in the hospital. Those who follow a patient waiting to be attended to, are not encouraged for now.

”You should just help us to help you because the less the number of patients we attend to, the less the chances of spreading the virus.

”This is because every patient is a potential COVID-19 case,” he said.

The NMA chairman commended the Federal and State governments for the continued closure of schools, adding that safety should be paramount until the coast is clear.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that as of 7 p.m on Sunday, Kwara has 401 confirmed cases – 208 active, 179 discharged, and 14 deaths.
