The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps has disclosed plans to organise a one-day sensitisation workshop for personnel of security agencies to proffer a lasting solution to the consistent attacks on schools by kidnappers in the North Central geo-political zone

According to the NSCDC, the workshop which is expected to have 500 security personnel in attendance, will be held at the Nasarawa State Government House, Lafia, the state capital, on Thursday.

The Commander, National Safe Schools Response Coordination Centre, CSC Tersoo Shaapera, disclosed this during a press briefing on Tuesday in the Doma Local Government Area of Nasarawa State.

He explained that the attacks on many schools across the country necessitated the Federal Government to launch the programme, adding that the NSCDC will be collaborating with the Nigerian Army, the Nigerian Police Force, the Department of State Services, and private security organisations for the safe schools’ drive.

Shaapera mentioned the functions of the NSSRCC to include formulating school-host community engagement programmes for information gathering and security alert; advocacy, capacity development and creating awareness on safe schools approach; provide forensic evidence-based response, amongst others.

“The challenge cuts across all geo-political zones though with differences in its manifestation. Terrorism and insurgency has resulted in the worrisome kidnap and abduction of students and teachers with the destruction of physical structures of schools.

“The willingness and ability to end attacks on schools which has been overwhelmingly supported by the government, has today resulted in the establishment of the NSSRCC. The existence of the centre which is just 10 to 11 months is heartwarming,” Shaapera said.

The commander added, “For me as the Commander of the centre, the establishment of NSSRCC has come as a serious and strategic intervention to address the menace of insecurity in schools, and gladly, different measures have been taken as panacea to ending the problem.

“With the support and collaboration of all and sundry, I believe the goal is realisable. All we need to do is to demonstrate the willingness to support what the Federal Government has started. We must all unite against anything that will affect the teaching and learning process in any school, both the ones in urban, semi-urban and rural areas.”

Earlier, while welcoming Shaapera and his entourage to the state, the Commandant of the NSCDC in the state, Abbas Bappa-Muhammed, pledged the total commitment of all personnel of the command to ensure the protection of schools across the 13 LGAs of the state.

Also, at the exercise held within the premises of Ataoja School of Science, Osogbo, the trainees were engaged in the area of inter-agencies relations, to better position them for the task of assisting in crime prevention.

Addressing the participants at the closing session of the training on Monday, the National Provost, NHFSS, Kehinde Ogunlade, harped on the importance of training for security volunteers to keep them abreast of their duties.

Speaking in a similar vein, Osun Commander of the NHFSS, Ahmed Nureni, said the participants were trained by officers from the Osun State Command of Nigeria Police Force, Department of State Security, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, and the Immigration Service.

Nureni further said, “We have 1,200 hunters that came from all parts of Osun State for the 4-day training. Officers of the Nigeria Police Osun State Command, NSCDC, DSS, and the Immigration Service were here to train our men on their responsibilities.

“The participants were separated into different groups and the trainers took them through different aspects of our job.

“More importantly, they were trained on how to relate with conventional security organizations to achieve maximum results in keeping the environment safe for residents of the state. We also had training on intelligence gathering.

“We hope to keep doing this regularly. It is part of our plans for hunters in this state. We know every part of the state and the forests around. We have resolved to contribute our quota by assisting conventional security organizations but we can’t do it without acquiring relevant knowledge.”

Air Commodore G.I. Jibia, Commander of the 303 Medium Airlift Group, Nigeria Air Force, says the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps is one of the critical elements of the nation’s security.

Jibia said this during a visit on Tuesday to the NSCDC Command Headquarters in Ilorin.

He noted that the NSCDC had been contributing to the security well-being of the country since its establishment.

The Commander, who recently assumed duty, explained that the visit was to seek the cooperation of NSCDC, saying that no security agency can succeed in isolation.

“As the Chief of Defence Staff stated recently, the country is bleeding, security-wise, and we are in a very challenging situation.

“We believe there is a need for all the security agencies to come together and through this collaborative effort, we can be result-oriented,” he said.

Jibia added that over the years NSCDC had played major roles in the security of the country.

He said that it had become imperative to seek collaborative effort of the corps in order to achieve set out goals and objectives.

The commander explained that the 303 Medium Airlift Group of the NAF was established to provide all the medium airlifting requirements of the Nigeria Air Force.

He said that it would assist the force to accomplish its own security mandate across the country.

Responding, the state Commandant of NSCDC, Makinde Ayinla, said that it had become imperative for the security operatives to collaborate and work together.

The commandant recalled the working relationship between NSCDC and the Nigeria Army since when the Corps was established and assured the Air Force commander of the NSCDC readiness to parley with Air Force.

A member of the House of Representatives, Shina Peller, had recently introduced a bill in the green chamber proposing to scrap the Corps and merge it with the Nigeria Police Force.

The Commandant-General, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Dr Ahmed Audi, has ordered his personnel to gun down suspected attackers of custodial facilities across the country.
