The Nigerian Meteorological Agency has said that the excessive heat being experienced in the country presently would remain for a while.

NiMET disclosed this in its weather and climate update posted on its official X page on Wednesday.

The agency in the post also outlined the weather’s implications and provided guidance to the public on how to manage the situation.

“Air Temperatures hit 41°C over the North and 39°C over the South with model Projections indicating temperatures to remain high in the coming days,” NiMET said.

Dehydration: This could also cause fainting; chicken pox disease, measles, heat rash, weakness of the body, slight fever, and dry lips; Heat-related illnesses; Respiratory Issues; and increased vulnerability to chronic conditions.

Adequate fluid intake. Seek shade, use fans, and wear light, breathable clothing to reduce exposure to high temperatures.

Avoid strenuous physical activity during peak heat hours (Stay indoors as much as possible between 12:00 noon and 4:00 pm).”

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency has notified the residents of the Federal Capital Territory, Edo, Kwara, and 22 other states of 48-hour downpour beginning on Thursday.

In its weekly heavy rainfall forecast bulletin released on Wednesday, the agency told the residents to also expect flash floods.
Other states listed are Katsina, Kano, Jigawa, Bauchi, Gombe, Plateau, Borno, Adamawa, Taraba, Kaduna, Niger, Nasarawa, Kogi, Enugu, Delta, Bayelsa, Abia, Anambra, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Ebonyi, Kwara, and Benue.

The bulletin reads: “Moderate to heavy rainfall is expected within the forecast period (Thursday 28th and Friday 29th, September 2023) over parts of Katsina, Kano, Jigawa, Bauchi, Gombe, Plateau, Borno, Adamawa, Taraba, Kaduna, Niger, Nasarawa, Kogi, Enugu, Edo, Delta, and Bayelsa.

Other States are: “Abia, Anambra, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Ebonyi, Kwara, Benue State and the Federal Capital Territory.”

On the likely impact of the rains, NiMet warned: “The expected moderate to heavy rainfall is expected to cause some flash flooding over their areas of occurrence.

“Strong winds should accompany the rains with the strongest winds expected over parts of Adamawa, Borno, Gombe, Bauchi, Yobe, Jigawa, Kano, Katsina, Zamfara, Sokoto, and Kebbi State.”

The agency cautioned residents against driving through surface runoff waters, as they have strong undercurrents.

It identified slippery road surfaces and reduced visibility as other hazards that may be triggered by the downpour.

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency has predicted dust haze weather condition, also known as harmattan, from Friday to Sunday across the country.

NiMet’s weather outlook released in Abuja anticipated prospects of thick dust haze on Friday over the Northern region with visibility of less than 1,000m over Yobe, Kano, Katsina and Jigawa.

“However, the remaining parts of the northern states, the central cities and the southern region should be in moderate dust haze condition with visibility range of 1,000m to 5,000m.

“Localised visibility of less than 1,000m is expected over parts of Kwara and Oyo States within the forecast period,” it said.

According to NiMet, thick dust haze with horizontal visibility of less than 1,000m is expected over Kano, Katsina, Jigawa and Yobe on Saturday.

The agency envisaged the rest of the northern states, the North-Central and southern region of the country to be in moderate dust haze condition with horizontal visibility range of 1,000m to 5,000m throughout the forecast period.

For Sunday, slight improvement in horizontal visibility is expected over the entire country with moderate dust haze condition in the range of 1, 000 to 5, 000m is expected over the country within the forecast period.

The public is advised to take necessary precautions due to dust particles presently in suspension over the atmosphere.

“Individuals with respiratory ailments are to protect themselves as the current dusty weather condition is adverse to their health.

”Night–time cold temperatures should be expected, hence, warm clothing are advised for the little ones. All Airline operators are advised to avail themselves of weather reports periodically from NiMet for effective planning in their operations,” it said.

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency has predicted sunny and cloudy weather activities from Monday to Wednesday across the country.

NiMet’s weather outlook released on Sunday in Abuja predicted sunny skies over the northern region on Monday throughout the forecast period.

According to it, sunny conditions with patches of clouds are expected over the North-Central region throughout the forecast period.

”Cloudy atmosphere with spells of sunshine are anticipated over the inland cities of the South with cloudiness over the coastal region in the morning hours.

Further into the day, there are chances of isolated thunderstorms over parts of Cross River, Rivers, Bayelsa, Delta and Akwa Ibom state,” it said.

NiMet envisaged hazy conditions with intervals of sunshine over the northern region throughout the forecast period on Tuesday.

It anticipated cloudy atmosphere with spells of sunshine over the North-Central region within the forecast period.

“The inland cities of the South and the coastal belt should be predominately cloudy with a few thunderstorms over parts of Rivers and Cross River state in the morning hours.

”Later in the day, thunderstorms are expected over parts of Cross River, Rivers, Bayelsa, Delta and Akwa Ibom state, ” it said.

The agency predicted hazy conditions on Wednesday with intervals of sunshine over the northern region throughout the forecast period.

According to it, cloudy atmosphere with spells of sunshine are expected over the North-Central region within the forecast period.

“The inland cities of the South and the coastal belt should be predominately cloudy with a few thunderstorms over parts of Rivers, Akwa Ibom and Cross River state in the morning hours.
