The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission has urged authorities in the United States to investigate the cause of death of a Nigerian professor, Marinus Iwuchukwu, who was found dead in Pittsburg Pennsylvania.

Allegheny County Police had received a distress call requesting they check on the well-being of the professor, who was later found dead in his house with a woman, Charce Dunn.

When a SWAT team gained entrance into the house, they found the couple dead; the 59-year-old professor was with stab wounds and the 50-year-old woman with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

When our correspondent contacted NiDCOM, the Public Relations Officer of the commission, Abdur-Rahman Balogun, said the US authorities would have to investigate the incident and notify the Nigerian embassy.

He said, “We have an embassy in the US that will take care of such. If it is criminal in nature, US authorities will carry out investigation. If the police suspect foul play, we encourage them to do the needful, to investigate. They will want to know the cause of the death and why it happened like that. They will also notify our embassy, the embassy will also notify us. That is the procedure.”

Nigerians who are stranded in the United Arab Emirates are currently undergoing profiling ahead of their evacuation to Nigeria.

In a viral video, thousands of people were seated in an open area with their bags and luggage following the mass deportation of aliens being carried out by the UAE authorities.

The Chairman, Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, who briefed journalists in Abuja on Friday, said the profiling being carried out by the Nigerian Consulate in Dubai was necessary to properly get detailed information about the Nigerians over there before evacuating them.

She said, “Immediately, the attention of the Nigerian Consulate in Dubai was drawn to the issue, Nigerians there are being profiled. Some of them have passports and some do not. There are some children that do not have any form of identification. Some do not even remember the names with which they entered the country originally. So they need to be profiled. It is also important to ensure that some have not committed a crime and they are just running.

“So, what the consulate is doing now is profiling everybody at the holding centre. Initially, at the airport, there was a fake WhatsApp message sent to everybody that there were flights that led to the rush to the airport. There were quite a lot of Africans.”

The NiDCOM chairman also explained that “It is after the profiling that the consulate will make a decision on the next step to take. The consulate and the embassy will brief the Federal Government on the next step to take.”

Poland has released 13 out of 19 Nigerians who fled the Ukrainian war and were detained in various camps.

Five of the detainees were said to have applied for asylum in Poland.

The Nigerians were reportedly released following the intervention of the Nigerian Ambassador to Poland Christian Ugwu

A statement on Wednesday by the spokesman, Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, Abdul-Rahman Balogun, quoted Ugwu as saying that one of the six in detention claimed he is a Cameroonian because the mother is from Cameroon.

Unfortunately, the remaining five all applied for international protection (asylum) in Poland, including Igwe Ikechukwu Christian, who had been interviewed by some foreign media.

“They can not be released until the Government of Poland takes a decision on their application or they decide to withdraw the application”, the envoy added.

He assured that the Mission would continue to do its best to ensure that the interest of Nigerians is well taken care of, despite the fact that they had been adequately briefed on the likely consequences of remaining as undocumented immigrants in Poland.

The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), had in March approved the evacuation of Nigerians mostly students trapped in the Russian- Ukrainian crisis.

The directive was carried out by the interministerial agencies coordinated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs with over 1,600 Nigerians brought back home.

However, some Nigerians chose to remain behind and were clamped into detention centres in Poland.

Speaking on the development, the NIDCOM Chairman, Dr Abike Dabiri-Erewa, commended the successful intervention of the Nigerian mission in Poland and reiterated the call for Nigerians to obey the laws of the countries they reside in.
