The Director-General of NYSC, Brigadier General Shuaibu Ibrahim, disclosed this during a session with some corps members at the service’s Bauchi State Secretariat.

Speaking on the amount approved as monthly allowance for corps members, Brigadier General Ibrahim, said contrary to the various amounts being circulated on social media, the sum of N33,000 had been approved as the new rate.

He explained that the approval was made in line with the implementation of the new National Minimum Wage by the Federal Government.

He stressed that provision had been made for the new allowance in the year 2020 Budget, adding that payment would commence as soon as funds were released by the appropriate authorities.

However, the NYSC boss advised the corps members to be security conscious at all times, as well as warned against rumor-mongering and negative usage of the social media.

He also urged them to avoid unauthorised journeys and when authorised to travel, not to do so at night because of the inherent danger.

The Minister of Finance, Mrs Zainab Ahmed who spoke during a media briefing on the activities of her ministry said that the financial implications of the new minimum wage had been worked out by the Presidential Committee set up by Buhari adding that the report had been submitted to the president.

“Apart from the increase of the minimum wage from N18, 000 to N30, 000, there is also a consequential adjustment that we have to negotiate with the labour unions.

“It could be a flat amount or a proportion, but the other aspect that is clear is that there would be an increase for the National Youth Service Corps as well because, by the Act, they should earn at least the minimum wage and the NYSC also has to increase to that N30, 000.”

“The total implication of that would be worked out only after the negotiations and that would involve determining how much increase every other employee above the minimum wage would get.
