In the heart of Nigeria’s bustling communities, including Ojodu, where vibrant lives intertwine and dreams take root, the state of the nation hangs heavily over the residents. Nigeria, often hailed as the giant of Africa, is a land of immense potential, but it is also grappling with a multitude of challenges that impact the lives of every Nigerian, including those in the Ojodu community.

One of the enduring issues that continue to stir debate and unrest is the matter of fuel subsidy. This contentious topic has remained a persistent concern for Nigerians, causing economic ripples that are felt not only in the larger cities but also within local communities like Ojodu. While the government has made efforts to address this issue, it remains a source of frustration for many, as the price of fuel affects transportation costs, food prices, and daily life.

Fuel Subsidy Removal:

Fuel subsidy in Nigeria had been a longstanding and contentious issue even before the events leading up to the presidential election tribunal judgment. The government had traditionally subsidized the cost of fuel to keep prices artificially low for consumers. This subsidy was intended to alleviate the economic burden on the average Nigerian and was deeply entrenched in the country’s economic policy.

However, over time, the cost of fuel subsidy had become a significant fiscal burden on the government. It was a drain on the nation’s resources, leading to budgetary constraints, mounting debt, and economic instability. Despite the subsidy, fuel scarcity remained a recurrent issue, with long queues at petrol stations being a common sight.

In 2012, the then-President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration made a controversial move by announcing the partial removal of the fuel subsidy. This decision triggered widespread protests and strikes across the nation. Nigerians were deeply divided on the issue, with many arguing that the subsidy removal would lead to an increase in the cost of living and further economic hardship.

The Catalyst for Change:

The year 2023 heralded a new era in Nigeria’s history, marked by a decisive shift in economic policy. The government, under the leadership of President Bola Tinubu, made the momentous decision to remove the fuel subsidy once and for all, when he announced in his inaugural speech on the 29th of May, 2023 that subsidy is gone. This bold step was not taken lightly but was seen as essential to chart a path toward sustainable economic growth and development.

“Subsidy is gone” Tinubu exclaimed during his inaugural address at Eagle Square, Abuja, shortly after he was sworn in as the 16th President of Nigeria.

He further explained, “We commend the decision of the outgoing administration in phasing out the petrol subsidy regime which has increasingly favoured the rich more than the poor. Subsidy can no longer justify its ever-increasing costs in the wake of drying resources.”

The removal of the subsidy was met with mixed reactions across the nation. Citizens had long grappled with the high cost of living, and the prospect of higher fuel prices was met with apprehension. However, President Tinubu’s administration made a compelling case for the move, emphasizing that the funds previously allocated to the subsidy would now be redirected toward critical infrastructure, healthcare, education, and social welfare programs.

“We shall, instead, re-channel the funds into better investment in public infrastructure, education, health care, and jobs that will materially improve the lives of millions,” he said.

Impact on the Citizens:

The removal of the fuel subsidy had an immediate impact on the lives of everyday Nigerians. While the government’s rationale was to allocate funds to essential services, citizens had to grapple with the new economic landscape. Fuel prices surged, causing a ripple effect on the cost of transportation, goods, and services. The inflationary pressures were palpable, and families faced budgetary constraints.

Some more impacts include the following:

  1. School Fees on the Rise: Education is the bedrock of any society, and Ojodu is no exception. However, recent times have seen a concerning trend as several schools within the community have raised their fees. For parents and guardians, this has become a source of worry. The burden of ensuring quality education for their children has become even heavier. Families that once comfortably covered their children’s school expenses are now confronted with the difficult choice of making ends meet or securing their children’s education. It’s a challenge that many in Ojodu are grappling with daily.
  2. Food Prices Skyrocket: Another pressing concern is the drastic increase in food prices. The staple of Nigerian households, a bag of rice, has become a symbol of the economic struggle. What was once accessible at 25,000-30,000 Naira per bag now demands more than double that amount, exceeding 50,000 Naira. This price surge ripples through every aspect of daily life. From the cost of preparing daily meals to the overall household budget, the impact of these price hikes is profoundly felt. Families in Ojodu, like countless others across the nation, are adapting their food choices and spending habits to navigate this new financial reality.
  3. Businesses Under Pressure: In the bustling markets and small enterprises that define Ojodu, the increased cost of living and doing business has not gone unnoticed. Entrepreneurs who once thrived in the community are now grappling with rising operational expenses. Some have been forced to adjust their pricing, potentially alienating customers. The economic landscape of Ojodu is evolving, and businesses are being put to the test. Adaptation and resilience are the watchwords, but the challenges remain palpable.
  4. Shifting Work Modes: Organizations within the community have also felt the impact. Some have chosen to adapt by adopting hybrid work models, recognizing the need for flexibility in these uncertain times. This shift aims to balance employee well-being with operational efficiency. However, not all organizations have made this transition. Some have left their employees to face the financial reality of fuel subsidy removal on their own. For these employees, navigating the increased cost of living while maintaining their work commitments has become a formidable challenge.

Coping and Looking Forward:

In the midst of these trials, Ojodu stands as a symbol of strength and unity. The challenges posed by rising school fees, soaring food prices, and a shifting economic landscape are formidable, but they are not insurmountable. As we navigate these turbulent waters, let us remember that we are not alone.

Within our community, the spirit of Ojodu prevails. Neighbors support one another, and together, we can find innovative solutions. Education remains a priority, and by coming together, we can explore avenues to ensure that every child has access to quality learning. As we adapt our food choices and spending habits, let’s embrace the rich diversity of our local cuisine and the strength of our communal bonds.

Our local businesses are the lifeblood of Ojodu, and as they face economic pressures, let us continue to patronize and support them. By doing so, we strengthen our community’s economic fabric.

For those organizations that have adopted hybrid work modes, this flexibility is a testament to our ability to adapt and thrive in changing times. And for those who continue to face financial challenges, remember that Ojodu stands with you, ready to offer support and understanding.

In this evolving landscape, we are reminded that resilience is our greatest asset. Ojodu’s spirit, characterized by unity and determination, is our guiding light. Together, we will navigate these challenges and emerge stronger on the other side.

As Ojodu’s resilience shines brightly, let it inspire us to face each new day with hope and determination. The road ahead may be challenging, but it is one we travel together—a journey that leads to a brighter, more prosperous future for our beloved community.

The post Man Recounts Gory Tale of How He Was Kidnapped, Tortured in Ojodu, Shares Pictures, Video first appeared on InsideOjodu.]]>
A car dealer, Adekeye Adeyemi has recounted how he was kidnapped, tortured, and almost on the verge of being killed in Lagos by a syndicate linked to one of his clients.

Adeyemi who claimed he was eventually saved miraculously in the process by the police who intercepted the vehicle while he was being taken away; gave a graphic detail of how the incident happened during a media parley in Lagos on Friday, May 12.

He said the men lured him to a house: No 2 Soyemi Street, Ojodu, Lagos, stripped him, seized his phone, and forced him to transfer money from his bank account.

How it all started

Incidentally, the syndicate that carried out the kidnap according to Adeyemi did so on the authority of one Mr Owolabi Onipede who had earlier purchased two vehicles that were yet to be cleared from the port from Adeyemi.

The vehicles according to Adeyemi were “bought by Onipede on my unction account. No dealer would do that. But I did that so he could see the transparency in the whole deal. But when the vehicle got to Nigeria, it incurred some demurrage because there was a delay in clearing.

“The vehicles were still not being cleared when I traveled to Osun for a prayer programme. While in Osun, Rogba, the brother of Owolabi Onipede called me and asked me to come back to Lagos; that they were ready to make payments to clear the cars,” said Adeyemi who did not suspect any foul play.

At first, he asked Rogba to pay the agent that had been detailed to clear the vehicles at the port. But he insisted his brother wanted him in Lagos.

Owolabi Onipede

Owolabi Onipede

The journey to Lagos

Unknown to Adeyemi, they were planning something untoward. He stopped what he was doing in Osun and headed to Lagos. It was while in transit Rogba called him again and asked him to link up with him at Sabo Bus stop around Ojodu when he gets to Lagos.

Adeyemi met him at the said location and from there was taken to No 2 Soyemi Street along with one Wale Soyemi who incidentally lives in the house. It is a face-me-I-face-you house supposedly owned by Soyemi’s father.

Soyemi’s sister according to Adeyemi operates a shop in front of the house. There is an RCCG parish in front of the house too.

He was ushered into the house and offered a sit. He saw a number of young men in the house and was wondering what could be going on.

Not long, Rogba who led him to the house told him in the Yoruba Language that, “Mr. Yemi, Eko te wa, eti si rin o” meaning, your coming to Lagos is a misadventure.

The import of that statement did not dawn on Adeyemi until minutes later when the men in the room took turns to beat him. He was being tortured while they informed him the vehicles in question had been cleared by the agent.

“Immediately I called the agent and he confirmed to me that he had used his money to clear the cars. He said he did not want to bother me since I said I was traveling. I now said to them that since the vehicles had been cleared why did they ask me to come to Lagos? Rather than get an answer, I was greeted with a heavy slap”

The torture continued

Adeyemi could not fathom why they had to beat and torture him.

They collected all he had on him including his iPhone pro max and some jewelry. And they stripped him.

He recounts, “Wale Soyemi brought a rope from inside the fridge in his room. I was tied for more than 8 hours. They were beating me, punching me. At a point, I zeroed my mind that the end had come.

“Rogba Onipede later brought out his phone and started showing me pictures of people they had dealt with. He showed me more than 10 people including the picture of a lady who was beaten to the point that her eyes were blurred.

“It was at that point that I gave up hope of escape. I surrendered to God. But then I prayed and pleaded with God that I don’t want another person to father my child, trusting that God would see me through.

“Wale Soyemi’s sister who runs a POS service outside the house and many others were coming and going out of the house as if nothing was happening. Some were smoking Indian hemp and did as if nobody was being tortured. At a point, they brought out a golf stick and started hitting me on the head and all over my body.

Owolabi Onipede from Turkey

In the process of the torture, Wale Soyemi called Owolabi Onipede who was the first person Adekeye had a business deal with. He is said to be the owner of O’Blow Hotel located at 45 Agbado Oke Aro Road, Ifako Ijaiye. He was in Turkey as at the time he called.

“He called him, put him on video, and showed him how I was tied down and was being tortured. To show he was behind my ordeal, he said to them that he had not seen blood yet, that they should get a blade and tear my body apart so he could see blood.

“But they told him it was not time for that yet, that they were going to use me to kidnap the agent that cleared the vehicles and collect the vehicles from him forcefully. And they would remove parts of our bodies they need and throw the rest into water.”

Exasperated, accused.

At that point, Adeyemi was already exasperated. Nobody knew where he was. His phone was ringing but he could not receive the call since it was in their custody. They got his bank details and blocked his accounts after transferring the money there.

He was there till the following day. “The second day, Some men in military uniform came to the room and asked me what happened. I gave my side of the story and the men accused me of being a thief. I said I was not a thief but that we only had a business transaction.

“The military men now asked me to call the agent and pretend as if nothing had happened to me, that I should speak well with him on the phone and agree on where we could meet. I had to cooperate with them. I called the agent and we agreed to meet at Ago Palace in Isolo. They took me in their car and we drove to Ago Palace.

“By the time they got to Ago palace, they untied him because the agent was around. But they threatened me not to raise any alarm. They said some of their people were already in front of my house in Ikeja, and that they would kill all those in my house if I raised the alarm.

“The agent eventually came and we got talking. Not long, the soldiers bashed in and threw him into the car. We all entered the car and they started taking us on another ride to nowhere.

The police stepped in

“What saved the day was that the friend of the agent came along with him to Ago Palace. He was at a distance watching what was happening. He was the one who ran to the police station to tell them someone had been kidnapped. And that there were some military men involved in the kidnap.

“The police immediately swung into action and intercepted us. They redirected our vehicle to Ago Palace Police Station. That was how God thwarted their plan. On getting to the station, the agent who did not know what I had experienced thought I was the one who set him up to be kidnapped. As soon as we got to the police station he started pointing at me that I was the one who arranged his kidnap.

“The police didn’t ask any question. They just put me in detention along with others. It was on the Good Friday of the year 2022.

The Miracle

But a miracle happened. On Easter Monday the IPO came to the cell and they were planning to take Adeyemi to court. “The soldiers with us were released to military police. Immediately after the IPO left, the DPO came and asked to see me.”

“Incidentally, the DPO had seen a video of where I was being tortured in a Whatsapp group. The video must have been taken when I was being tortured in Ojodu by Soyemi or any of the other men in the room. I later got to know they sent the video to all my contacts.”

Adeyemi said the video got to his mother who was living in the US. According to him, his mother, who was ill at that time could not stand the shock. She passed on three days after. So when the DPO who is a lady saw Adekeye she quickly linked his face to the video she saw on the WhatsApp group. “The DPO now ordered they should bring me out of detention.”

Impact of the torture

That was how he was released from the cell and was asked to go and treat himself in the hospital. By then, a lot of damage had been done to him. His hearing was impaired. He was no longer himself.

“I did a series of tests in the hospital and spent millions of naira on my health. I just started regaining the use of my right ear.”

The twist

Everybody knew it was a clear case of kidnapping and sundry crime. But one year after the gory incident, the dust is yet to settle. Adekeye told journalists that one DIG Adeleke played a great role in ensuring that he gets justice. “He played a fatherly role in trying to settle the matter. But some forces within the system are trying to trivialize the crime. My assailants are now being charged with “tying and fist blowing” from what my lawyer found out. That is after two months that the same Directorate of Public Prosecution charged them for kidnapping. I don’t know what changed between then and now. But I suspect some people are being manipulated in the system.”

Already Wale Soyemi who supervised the torture in the Ojodu house is being detained in Ikoyi prison, while a warrant of arrest has been issued to arrest Rogba and Owolabi Onipede. Rogba is said to have jumped bail about three times. That notwithstanding, Adeyemi said he got the hint that there were several moves to thwart the case and make light of it. Rogba Owolabi may never show up in court again.

“I gathered some people connected to the case asked the DPP that the charges against my assailants be reviewed. My concern is that justice is about being thwarted. I would have been killed and forgotten. While we are in court, we are also appealing that the DPP should maintain its earlier charge. There is clear evidence that these people are killers.”

The matter will be heard on Monday, May 15 at the Lagos Igbosere Magistrate Court 18 under Magistrate K.K. Awoyinka

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has arrested a Kogi State House of Assembly candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party, Ismaila Yusuf Atumeyi, with N326 million and $140,500 cash.

According to available information, the candidate for the 2023 elections was arrested on October 30, 2022. He was arrested in connection with a N1.4 billion bank fraud.

Atumeyi, who is seeking to represent Ankpa 11 Constituency in the Kogi State House of Assembly, was picked up alongside one Joshua Dominic, an alleged serial fraudster, in a sting operation at Macedonia Street, Queens Estate, Karsana, Gwarinpa, Abuja.

Also arrested in connection with the fraud is Abdumalik Salau Femi, a former bank employee, who allegedly supplied the inside information that facilitated the attack on the bank by the syndicate. He was picked up on November 1, 2022 at Radisson Blu Hotel in Lagos.

Following his arrest, a search was conducted on his home in Morgan Estate Phase 2, Ojodu, Lagos State, where a total of $470,000 was recovered.

The arrest of the suspects followed months of investigation into the hacking of one of the commercial banks by a syndicate of fraudsters who pulled off a heist of N1.4 billion.

The syndicate allegedly moved N887 million into the account of Fav Oil and Gas Limited, from where the monies were paid to several Bureau de Change operators and some auto dealers for exchange into United States Dollars and purchase of high-end cars.

Dominic, who has severally been arrested for fraud, allegedly helped Atumeyi perfect the hacking plan through Abdumalik.

Dominic, a self-styled investment expert and Managing Director of Brisk Capital Limited, was arrested in May 2021 by the Special Fraud Unit of the Nigeria Police for alleged N2 billion investment scam.

He allegedly defrauded over 500 persons in a phony investment scheme. Two Range Rover Luxury SUVs were also recovered from the two suspects arrested in Abuja.

They will be charged to court as soon as the investigation is concluded, the EFCC said in a statement on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, the Commission expressed concern about the rising spate of cyber-attacks on banks and the reluctance of the institutions to report such breaches to law enforcement.

While warning that such reticence would only embolden the criminals, the EFCC appealed to financial institutions to collaborate with it to secure the financial sector from threats of cyber-attacks.

It will also be recalled that the EFCC had in the wake of the recent announcement by the Central Bank Nigeria of plans to redesign and re-issue higher denominations of the Naira, warned Bureau de Change operators to be wary of currency hoarders who would attempt to seize the opportunity to offload the currencies they had illegally stashed away.

The Executive Chairman of Ojodu Local Council Development Area, Lagos State, Hon David Olusegun Odunmbaku, on Wednesday handed over a newly purchased patrol vehicle to Alausa Police Station.

The gesture is part of his commitment to protect and secure the lives and properties of Ojodu residents and ensure increased security presence in the environs.

According to him, the presentation of the patrol vehicle would give the Police the additional aid to effectively execute the duty of containing crime in the Council area.

It would be recalled that Odunmbaku had during his 100 days in office celebration presented patrol vehicles to Ojodu, Pen Cinema and Area G Police Divisions.

The Divisional Police Officer, Alausa, W/CSP. Opadola O. Elizabeth, described the intervention of the Council boss by presenting the vehicle as a relief to the Police Station. She said that the provision of the vehicle will help make the mobility of her officers seamless.

A distribution warehouse located at Wilmer Street, Isheri-Berger Ojodu Local Council Development Area in Lagos State has been closed down over sales of contaminated milk.

The Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency (LASCOPA) in a statement ordered the closure after its General Manager, Afolabi Solebo (Esq.), led an enforcement team to the distribution warehouse.

A video had surfaced online showing a middle-aged man selling hazardous and contaminated milk to unsuspecting members of the public at Ibidun Street, in the Ojuelegba area of the State.

According to Solebo, the man disclosed during an earlier interrogation by men of the Nigeria Police Force, Area C Police Station, Surulere, that the products were collected from the warehouse at Wilmer Street in Isheri, Berger.

The LASCOPA boss said the actions taken against the warehouse were meant to ensure that further sales of the hazardous and contaminated milk are stopped and withdrawn from circulation in order to protect residents from consuming milk that is harmful to their health.

He said the warehouse personnel distributing the unwholesome products to retailers flouted safety regulations of the food and beverage sector.

This is as he reiterated that the state government has zero tolerance for the sales of hazardous and expired products.

The LASCOPA boss was quoted as saying, “We, on our own part, will carry out a forensic investigation, through the Standards Organisation of Nigeria, SON, to confirm the actual state of those products, because mere opening the product, we discovered that they smell.

“I will want to warn the members of the public to ensure that they check whatever they are buying, check the product information such as the manufacture and expiry dates and all other relevant information about the product”.

The General Manager gave an assurance that the state government will not leave any stone unturned irrespective of whose ox is gored, just as LASCOPA will continue to promote consumers’ rights and ensure that Lagosians are protected at all times.

Solebo also called on members of the public to support the Agency in ridding Lagos of illegal activities by reporting traders or persons who sell fake, expired, and substandard products.

Meanwhile, LASCOPA had said that the warehouse located at Wilmer Street, Isheri Berger will remain closed until it gets the court order to seal up the premises according to the Agency’s law.

The Chief Press Secretary, Jumu’ah Abiodun, disclosed this in a statement on Monday.

According to the statement, successful candidates are to go to the council secretariat with their credentials such as academic and birth certificates, LASRRA among others.

The statement reads; “This is to inform residents of Ojodu LCDA, most especially those that submitted application letters for different non-pensionable positions at our council, that the Executive Chairman, Mr. David Odunmbaku, has fulfilled one of his electioneering campaigns promises by approving the employment of over 150 non-pensionable staff.”

“The successful candidates who are graduates will be deployed to hospitals, accounting and revenue departments to assists the senior staff, doctors, and nurses, while those with secondary school certificates will work as clerical assistants, security and cleaners.”

Recall, after he assumed office, Odunmbaku dissolved the previous list of the scheme to pave way for new candidates. Despite the dissolution, his administration continues the payment of aged people in the scheme.

In his message when the aged people visited him in his office, Odunmbaku said: “It really struck through my heart that at age 65 and above you still out there struggling to survive, for me I won’t let this continue.”

“Truly we have stopped all non-pensionable staff salaries, but I have instructed your salaries to continue, at this age you should be at home relaxing not out there as gatemen, sweepers, or cleaners. Your salaries continue, go home and enjoy your old age.”

“For our youths, we want to engage them as much as we can, we want to take them out of the street, with this, we’ll reduce crime to the barest minimum,” Odunmbaku said.

According to the council chair, he cited that the scheme is to prepare them for the future and not a permanent job. “Gone are the days’ non-pensionable staff would be at the council for 10 to 15 years is gone, the current policy can not be more than two years, is for them to get engaged while they get themselves full-time employment, It’s not a permanent job.”
