A 16-year-old climber has survived with only a leg injury after falling more than 500 feet on Oregon’s Mount Hood.

The teen was climbing with a group Monday morning when he plunged into an area of the mountain called Devil’s Kitchen, which is about 10,500 feet up and near the peak’s summit, police say.

“This is a mountain, it’s a technical mountain, this isn’t a Sunday stroll,” Lt. Brian Jensen of the Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office told Q13 Fox. “It’s inherently dangerous and you know, going up there, you need to have the proper skill set and the proper equipment to do so safely. Doing so with anything less than that can, it can be dangerous.”

Rescuers will be bringing the patient down from approximately the location the arrow is pointing to, known as The Devil’s Kitchen

UPDATE: Rescuers are making their way down the mountain with the climber now. @KGWNews has a livestream here: https://www.pscp.tv/w/1YqKDnenjVEJV

Rescue crews took four hours to get to the location where the teen fell, then “began rendering care immediately, splinting the climber’s leg,” the sheriff’s office said in a tweet. The temperatures on the mountain during that time were in the mid-30s.

Authorities in Oregon have suspended their search for a woman who disappeared earlier this month after going on a hike.

Allyson Watterson, 20, was reported missing on Dec. 22, roughly 30 hours after she was last seen hiking in a wooded area near North Plains with her boyfriend, according to the Washington County Sheriff’s Office. Her family hadn’t heard from her since Dec. 20.

Watterson and her boyfriend, Benjamin Hunter Garland, became separated during their hike and he was able to find his way out of the area. He was arrested on Dec. 23 but for something unrelated to his girlfriend’s disappearance, officials said.

The frantic search for a missing 2-year-old girl lost in the Oregon wilderness had a happy ending after the toddler was found safe by a woman on horseback and her dog.

Tammy Stevens, 59, of Beaverton, was out for a ride Thursday morning with her horse, Bo, and her dogs, Wilson and Maddie, miniature Australian Shepherds, when she joined the search for the missing girl, according to Sgt. Marcus Mendoza, a spokesman for the Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office.

Little Iris Nix was walking with her grandmother on a trail in the Molalla River Recreation Area when she ran ahead and out of sight, Mendoza said.

He said as Stevens scouted terrain she described as steep and dangerous, she heard a child crying.

“I said to Wilson, ‘Go get her and show me the way,’” Stevens said in a recorded interview with a deputy.

“Wilson was climbing for her so I tied Bo up and then climbed up, really steep, super steep, about 70 feet and there she was,” she said. “She was pretty upset.”

Iris was out for a walk with her grandmother Gayla Ann Jay, 62, of Molalla, and a sibling, when she disappeared. Her grandmother looked for 15 minutes and then summoned help from loggers passing by.

“Yeah, 15 minutes I could tolerate. After 15 minutes I started to lose it,” Gayla told Fox 12 Oregon.

Iris was lost in the wood for about two hours.

“It was a really good story,” Stevens said. “I’m so thankful.”

The police in Dayton, Ohio killed the suspect within just 30 seconds after he started taking random shots, but sadly, not before he murdered 9 people.

The gunman who carried out a deadly mass shooting in Dayton, Ohio, this month had cocaine and other drugs in his system at the time, a according to a coroner’s report.

In a news conference on Thursday the Montgomery County coroner, Dr. Kent Harshbarger, said cocaine, antidepressants and alcohol were found in Connor Betts’ system when he opened fire with an AR-15 style gun in the city’s historic Oregon District on Aug. 4, killing nine people before police shot and killed him. That shooting came just hours after another deadly gun rampage, this time in El Paso, Texas.

Harshbarger added that investigators also found a pipe device and a clear bag containing cocaine on the 24-year-old Betts.

The coroner also told reporters that two people shot by Betts also were shot by police, but none fatally. He said all the deadly gunshot wounds to the nine victims came from Betts’ weapon.

Harshbarger said police shot Betts about 24 times in all, mostly striking his upper torso and lower extremities.

Dayton Police Chief Richard Biehl said the officers’ goal at the time was to “immediately stop the killing.”

On Tuesday, Biehl said Betts shot 26 people in the span of 32 seconds before responding officers fatally shot him.

Surveillance footage released this week, which was pieced together from several local businesses, showed Betts spending nearly two hours in the area before his spree began.

Betts was first caught on camera in the area at 11:04 p.m. when he parked his car and walked to a bar, Blind Bob’s, with his sister Megan and another companion.

The FBI has announced that investigators have discovered what is believed to be the body of a 2-year-old boy whose parents were involved in an apparent murder-suicide in Montana.

“We want to share with you that Montana authorities have found what is believed to be the remains of the missing Medford, Oregon, 2-year-old, Aiden Salcido. Thank you to all who shared in the search. Please keep Aiden’s family & friends in your thoughts…” the FBI’s Portland office tweeted early Sunday evening.

Medford police reported that the body turned up in a remote area of Montana. It was not clear just how he died.

The remains of the body were found in the same area where the family had been seen several days earlier.

Medford police said that witnesses called in tips after seeing the story on the news and were instrumental in helping find a remote camp believed to have been occupied by the family.

The boy’s parents, Daniel Salcido and Hannah Janiak, were found lifeless on Wednesday in Kalispell, Mont., just after the police stopped them following a chase because they had felony burglary warrants for their arrest.

Officers found Janiak dead with a gunshot wound to her head and Salcido dead with a self-inflicted gunshot wound, the FBI said.

Their child was not in the SUV — a 1996 GMC Jimmy with Oregon license plates, the FBI said.

Along with camping gear and clothing, detectives found a receipt in the car from the Kalispell Walmart dated July 25, the same day they died. Salcido and Janiak appeared in the surveillance video but Aiden did not, investigators said.

The Jackson County, Ore., Sheriff’s Office investigated the couple for a burglary in 2018, the FBI said. Both were convicted of the charges, and Janiak was to begin serving her sentence at the Jackson County Jail on June 11, the FBI said. She did not show up for her sentencing.

Felony warrants then were issued for the couple’s arrest.

Relatives described Janiak to law enforcement as a good mother who had mental health issues.

Relatives also told law enforcement that the family was homeless and would camp along the greenway in Medford.
