Rishi Sunak is now officially United Kingdom’s Prime Minister after meeting with King Charles III on Tuesday morning.

He met with the King in the palace’s 1844 room, where the King invited him to form a government.

Sunak had arrived the Palace around 10:15am to meet the King, shortly after Liz Truss tendered her resignation letter to the King in the same Palace.

Sunak will be UK’s third leader in seven weeks after winning a Tory leadership contest triggered by Truss stepping down

After being selected by Tory MPs on Monday, Sunak warned the country faced a “profound economic challenge”

He ruled out an early general election, despite calls from Labour, the Scottish National Party, the Liberal Democrats and the Green Party.

The new prime minister will make his own statement around 11:35 as he arrives at No 10 Downing Street.

Sunak is the first person of colour, the first British-Asian and the first Hindu to lead the United Kingdom.

He enters Downing Street at a moment of crisis for his party and the country, after Liz Truss’s shambolic 50-day tenure plunged Britain into even deeper economic turmoil.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has on Thursday officially resigned from his office.

Johnson had earleir rebuffed calls by his Cabinet to step down in the wake of ethics scandals. He gave in after more than 40 ministers quit his government and told him to go.

It was not immediately clear whether Johnson would stay in office while the Conservative Party chooses a new leader, who will replace him as prime minister.

Minutes before the news broke, Treasury chief Nadhim Zahawi called on Prime Minister Boris Johnson to resign just 36 hours after Johnson put him in the job, while another newly appointed Cabinet minister quit her post.

Zahawi said Johnson knew “the right thing to do” was to “go now.”

Zahawi was appointed late Tuesday to replace Rishi Sunak, who resigned saying he could no longer support Johnson after a series of ethics scandals.

Kansas Republican Rep. Steve Watkins weighs in.

Iraqi lawmakers approved a resolution Sunday calling to expel U.S. troops from the country, following an American drone attack that killed Iranian Gen. Qassem Soleimani.

The resolution asks the Iraqi government to end the agreement under which Washington sent forces to Iraq more than four years ago to help in the fight against the Islamic State terror group.

“The Iraqi government has an obligation to end the presence of all foreign forces on Iraqi soil and prevent it from using Iraqi lands, waters, and airspace or any other reason,” Iraqi Parliament Speaker Mohammed al-Halboosi said in an address to lawmakers before the vote.

The majority of about 180 legislators present in Parliament voted in favor of the resolution. It was backed by most Shiite members of parliament, who hold a majority of seats. Many Sunni and Kurdish legislators did not show up for the session, apparently because they oppose abolishing the deal.

But the Iraqi Parliament vote doesn’t mean that the U.S. military has to leave the country immediately. It’s a non-binding vote, which is seen as mostly symbolic.

The 5,000 U.S. troops are in Iraq at the invitation fo the country’s executive branch, the Prime Minister’s officer — not Parliament. It is up to the Iraqi Prime Minister whether the troops will be expelled.

The vote comes two days after a U.S. drone strike killed Soleimani at the Baghdad airport, ratcheting up tensions in the region and raising fears of war.

There are over 100,000 Iranian-backed militia fighters in Iraq.  Their leaders have called for “revenge” for Soleimani’s death.

Meanwhile, the U.S.-led coalition in Iraq has officially “paused” the training of Iraqi forces and the support of their operations against ISIS to focus on protecting its troops and bases, according to a coalition statement released Sunday.

The coalition said the decision is subject to continuous review.

U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Thursday set out what he described as the most “radical” legislative agenda in a generation — zeroing in on how he intends to deliver key promises on everything from Brexit to health care.

The government’s agenda for the year was laid out in the Queen’s Speech, delivered in the House of Lords by Queen Elizabeth II at the state opening of Parliament. It then moves to debate and eventual symbolic vote in the House of Commons.

“We have no time to waste and we begin immediately with the most radical Queen’s Speech in a generation to deliver on the priorities of the British people,” Johnson said in the foreword to the speech.

It comes a week after Johnson’s Conservative Party stormed to an 80-seat House of Commons majority in a general election that exceeded Tory expectations and gives the prime minister a clear mandate to get his agenda through Parliament.

The top priority was Britain’s departure from the European Union, having run on the slogan “Get Brexit Done.” The government intends to pass Johnson’s withdrawal bill — negotiated with the E.U. — before the end of January, and announced Thursday that the new version of the bill means that a post-Brexit transition period must end by the end of 2020.

On the question of immigration, which shadowed the Brexit issue, the Johnson government intends to introduce an Australian-style points system that it says will prioritize high-skilled immigrants who speak English and who don’t have criminal records.

It will also introduce a fast-track visa system to encourage doctors, nurses and other health care professionals to come to the U.K., as part of an effort to combat a staff shortage in the country’s struggling National Health Service.

A prominent Maltese businessman has been charged as an accomplice in the 2017 car bomb assassination of anti-corruption reporter Daphne Caruana Galizia.

Yorgen Fenech, a leading hotelier and former director of the Maltese power company, was also charged Saturday with promoting, organizing or financing a group with the intention of committing a crime.

It wasn’t immediately clear whether the “group” referred to the three men being held since December 2017 on charges of carrying out the bombing.

Fenech pleaded not guilty in the evening courtroom hearing, just 10 days after police arrested him aboard his yacht as it was sailing away from Malta.

He was detained a day after a man identified as the alleged middleman in the murder plot agreed to give authorities information leading to the individual who ordered the killing in exchange for a presidential pardon.

Fenech’s name was on leaked documents as a source of income for companies named in the Panama Papers, a financial scandal Caruana Galizia was investigating before her death. She alleged that Maltese politicians were linked to companies named in the papers.

Following Caruana Galizia’s death, her reporting was continued by the Daphne Project. The group reported last year that Malta’s anti-laundering watchdog identified Fenech as the owner of 17 Black, the businessman’s clandestine Dubai-registered company.

Leaked emails showed the company stood to make payments to two Panama companies – one being listed in the name of Prime Minister Joseph Muscat’s chief of staff – for unspecified services.

Keith Schembri resigned as Muscat’s chief of staff last week after police detained him for questioning in the murder. Police said there weren’t grounds to hold him and he was later released. He has denied any wrongdoing.

Meanwhile, the embattled Muscat has been facing calls to resign over the alleged links of Schembri to the murder of Caruana Galizia.

While the prime minister’s fellow Labor Party lawmakers have backed him with a pledge of confidence, local media have said Muscat, who has held power since 2013, might stay in office until January, when a party congress must elect a new leader.

Anti-government protests in Iraq called out corruption, poor services and a lack of jobs; reaction and analysis from retired Lt. Col. Dakota Wood, senior research fellow for defense programs at the Heritage Foundation.

Iraqi Prime Minister Adel Abdul-Mahdi announced Friday he would resign after more than 40 anti-government protesters were killed by security forces a day earlier, as deadly confrontations between demonstrators and authorities continue across Baghdad and southern Iraq.

The move comes 13 months after Abdul-Mahdi, 77, took office, which triggered celebrations by anti-government protesters who’ve called for reforms to root out corruption, fix the country’s high employment and improve public services.

“I will submit to parliament an official memorandum resigning from the current prime ministry so that the parliament can review its choices,” he said in a statement.

He was appointed Iraq’s fifth prime minister following the 2003 U.S.-led invasion that toppled Saddam Hussein.

Iraq’s top Shiite cleric, the Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani, also called for lawmakers to withdraw their support for the prime minister.

Abdul-Mahdi said he “listened with great concern” to al-Sistani and made his decision in response to his call and in order to “facilitate and hasten its fulfillment as soon as possible.”

On the street near Baghdad’s packed Tahrir Square, people celebrated with caution.

“The political system will replace him with someone exactly the same,” said Taif, a 39-year-old protester. “Until this sick system is destroyed, we won’t leave.”

Another named Mortada, 21, said protesters want electoral reforms and “real change.”

“It’s not one man, it’s the whole system that needs to resign,” he said.

Both Taif and Mortada declined to give them full names for fear of retaliation.

Nearly 400 people have been killed since protestsbroke out nearly two months ago amid widespread dissatisfaction with the government. If accepted when put to a vote, Abdul-Mahdi would be the second Arab leader to be forced out by mass protests in recent months.

Saad Hariri resigned as Lebanon’s prime minister on Oct. 29, which has resulted in gridlock and uncertainly in that country’s political system.

On Tuesday, British PM, Boris Johnson is to make another attempt for 12 December general elections notwithstanding MPs turning down his plan.

In previous attempts, two-thirds were required, however, the PM will publish a bill that would only require just a simple majority to be successful.

However, he would still need the full support of the SNP and Lib Dems for the bill to pass.

Labour said that Boris Johnson, the PM should not be trusted despite the prime minister telling MPs Parliament was “dysfunctional and could no longer keep this country hostage”.

Well short of the two-thirds majority the bill needed to be a success under the Fixed-Term Parliaments Act, the government’s election motion was backed by Commons by 299 to 70.

Along with the SNP and DUP, a greater majority of Labour MPs refused to vote even as all Conservative MPs were in full support of the Motion. However, all but just one Dem MPs voted against it.

The prime minister officially accepted the European Union’s offer of an adjunct to the Brexit process to January 31st, then the vote came after.

The PM said the further three-month extension which he stood his ground was forced upon him by Parliament was “unwanted” according to the contents of a letter to EU officials.

The office of the Israeli president says that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu received the difficult task of forming a new government.

Wednesday’s decision came after President Reuven Rivlin’s attempts to negotiate a union government between Netanyahu and his main rival, Benny Gantz, failed.

Rivlin and Netanyahu were due to make statements later Wednesday.

Netanyahu faces an uphill fight. After a tight election, his Likud party, along with smaller allied parties, controls 55 seats, less than the required majority of 61 seats in parliament.

His former ally, the Israel Beitenu party, refuses to participate in a government with the ultra-religious partners of Netanyahu. Moderate opposition parties are unlikely to support Netanyahu.

Now he has up to six weeks to form a coalition. If it fails, Gantz will probably have a chance.

According to the final official results announced on Wednesday, Blue and White finished first with 33 seats in the 120-seat parliament, slightly ahead of 32 Likud seats. Even with the support of smaller allies, both parties do not reach the required majority.

A total of 55 lawmakers recommended that Netanyahu lead the next government, while 54 lined up behind Gantz. The main energy corridor is Avigdor Lieberman, whose group Yisrael Beitenu controls 8 seats. Lieberman has refused to support any candidate and is pushing for a unity government.

The corruption investigation against Netanyahu looms over the process. The Israeli attorney general recommended accusing Netanyahu of bribery, fraud and abuse of trust in a series of scandals.

Netanyahu, who denies acting badly, must attend a hearing with the attorney general next week, after which a final decision on the charges is expected. Legal experts say the probability of prosecution is high.

Under Israeli law, the president’s first option is given within six weeks to form a coalition. If it fails, you can choose an alternative candidate to try. After that, the majority of parliament could offer a third name for prime minister. And if that fails, Israel would be forced to hold its third election in less than a year.

After meeting Queen Elizabeth II, Boris Johnson has officially become Britain’s Prime Minister and will consequently form a “cabinet for modern Britain” as outgoing Prime Minister Theresa May took a parting shot at opposition Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn, urging him to quit.

In his very first speech as the Prime Minister of Britain on the steps of Downing Street, Johnson offered an optimistic vision of Britain and his administration that will “crack” the Brexit conundrum and unleash the full potential of the country.

“The British people have had enough of waiting and the time has come to act to give strong leadership. My job is to serve you the people,” he said.

He also promised to address social problems and improve education, saying he will “take personal responsibility”, adding “the buck stops here.”

In a message to the EU, he also said that even if he wants to have a deal, he will also prepare for a potential no-deal fallout “not because we want that outcome, but because it is only common sense to prepare.”

“Yes, there will be difficulties … but if there is one thing that has really sapped the confidence of business is not the decisions we have taken, it is our refusal to take decisions.”

He ended his speech saying “I am standing before you today, to tell you the British people, that those critics are wrong – the doubters, the doomsters, the gloomsters are going to get it wrong again.”

May appeared at the Parliament for PMQs earlier today for the last time as the country’s premier, a session that lasted 63 minutes and appears to be the longest PMQs in the country’s history.

While the atmosphere remained cordial, she clashed with Corbyn for the last time, who suggested that she should join the opposition to stop “the “reckless” Johnson’s government that promised to lead the country out of the EU with or without a deal.

She ended the exchange by calling on Corbyn to resign, saying “perhaps I could just finish my exchange with him by saying this: as a party leader who has accepted when her time was up, perhaps the time is now for him to do the same?”

India’s very recent national election featured a historic victory to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Hindu nationalist party, but also exposed the influence of money, power and questionable morality on the world’s largest democracy.

Close to 43% of the newbies of the lower house of Parliament that convenes on Monday for the first time since the election turned victorious despite facing criminal charges. And more than a quarter of those relate to rape, murder or attempted murder, according to a report by the civic group Association of Democratic Reforms.

The loophole that gives them liberty to take office is that they have not been convicted — in part because the Indian legal system has a huge backlog of an estimated 30 million cases and trials often last decades. When asked about the charges against them, they invariably accuse a political rival of framing them.

And as long as such rivalries often lead to false accusations, the main political parties say that it would be unfair to bar people from contesting elections unless they have been convicted by court.

Under existing laws, only those who have been sentenced to prison for two years or more can be restricted from elections.

Members of Parliament with criminal backgrounds is not new talk in India, but regardless of Modi’s campaign vow in 2014 to clean up corruption and the influence of money in politics, the problem appears to be worsening.
