Harry had the prestigious title removed by the Queen in 2020 after he and Meghan announced they would step down as working royals and move to California.

There had been speculation about which member of the Royal Family would be given the role, with Princess Anne tipped for the position.

The Duke of Sussex was appointed Captain General by the Queen in December 2017, succeeding Prince Philip.

Today’s announcement comes just a day after Harry unveiled his ‘provocative’ new memoir Spare,  a ‘loaded’ reference to his position as the younger brother of the heir to the throne.

In a personal message to the Royal Marines as they mark their 358th birthday today, the King said: ‘It is the greatest possible pleasure to assume the role of your Captain General. I am exceptionally proud to follow in the footsteps of so many members of my family over the last three-and-a-half centuries, all of whom held the role with a deep sense of admiration.

The Royal Marines have a distinguished and unparalleled history, both on land and at sea. I draw immense inspiration from your courage, determination, self-discipline and a remarkable capacity to endure in the most extreme environments.

‘I feel greatly honoured to become part of the Corps Family and very much look forward to meeting many of you in the near future. In the meantime, this comes with my heartfelt and special wishes for a very happy 358th birthday. Per Mare, Per Terram.’

In 2017, Harry had succeeded the Duke of Edinburgh, who had held the post for 64 years before standing down following his retirement from public duties.

The couple said they “stand with the people of Ukraine” and they condemned Vladimir Putin’s invasion of the sovereign nation.

The statement reads: “Prince Harry and Meghan, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex and all of us at Archewell stand with the people of Ukraine against this breach of international and humanitarian law and encourage the global community and its leaders to do the same.”

Prince Harry continued his feud with the media during an appearance on a panel discussing misinformation.

“I learned from a very early age that the incentives of publishing are not necessarily aligned with the incentives of truth,” he said.

Asked if he has spoken to Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg or Twitter chief executive Dorsey, Harry said he warned the latter his website was facilitating a coup on the eve of the January 6 riots at the US Capitol.

He said: “Jack and I were emailing each other prior to January 6 when I warned him his platform was allowing a coup to be staged. That email was sent the day before. And then it happened and I haven’t heard from him since.”

A group of Donald Trump supporters stormed the US Capitol building in Washington DC over claims the presidential election was rigged – and the role social media giants played in enabling the attack is being investigated.

Harry, who was listed as the co-founder of Archewell at the RE: WIRED summit, works at the Aspen Institute and looks into misinformation and disinformation in the media.

“That can’t be right,” he told the panel. “Especially for anyone who has children, we’re allowing this future to be defined by the very here and now. I would hope as human beings, as individuals with the ability of choice and decision-making they would worry more about people now, the safety of people but also what this means for the internet, a free internet but also what it means for the next generation and the generation after that and that and that and that.”

DailyMailTV reveals that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex met Tyler Perry through their mutual friend Opray Winfrey and have been living in Tyler’s $18 million mansion home since moving to LA at the end of March.

After announcing their plans to step down from their roles as senior members of the royal family, the couple began staying at a waterfront home in Vancouver Island. However, they relocated to California after Canada announced it would be restricting its borders due to COVID-19.

When Prince Harry, Meghan Markle, and their 1-year-old son, Archie, relocated to the US, they moved into Tyler Perry’s eight-bedroom, 12-bathroom Tuscan-style villa. The villa sits on 22 acres on the top of a hill in the ultra-exclusive Beverly Ridge Estates guard-gated community, offering sweeping views of the city from the backyard.

A source told DailyMail.com “Meghan and Harry have been extremely cautious to keep their base in LA under wraps. Their team helped them choose the location for their transition to Los Angeles wisely. Beverly Ridge has its own guarded gate and Tyler’s property has a gate of its own which is watched by their security team. Beverly Ridge is an excellent place to keep out of view. The neighbours are mostly old money and mega-rich business types rather than show business gossips. It goes without saying that the location is stunning – just one of the most beautiful and desirable areas in LA.”

During their talk over lunch, she told him that he and Meghan will be welcomed back if they ever decide to rejoin the royals.

The Queen agreed to meet Prince Harry upon his request and on Sunday, March 1, the Duke of Sussex discretely strolled from his Frogmore Cottage home in Windsor Home Park to the castle, where he and the Queen shared a light lunch and tea as they discussed his future.

A royal source said: “The Queen had a lot to talk to Harry about and this was the ideal time for them to both say their piece. When Harry and Meghan announced they wanted to quit it all happened very quickly and it was very stressful for all concerned. Sunday was the first time the Queen has had the chance to talk to Harry on his own and really find out what his plans are. It was a much more relaxed environment and they were both able to speak their mind. It’s fair to say she is very upset about him and Meghan leaving and she would love to see more of Archie, as would Prince Charles and the rest of the family. But she accepts at the moment that his mind is made up and he intends to live in North America. However she also wanted to make it clear that the arrangement can only work if they do not exploit their royal status and try to ‘cash in’ — that’s why she wouldn’t let them use the word ‘royal’ for their foundation. The Queen is protecting the institution and she is also aware of the cost of security. That is something that still needs to be resolved. But Harry is also a much-loved grandson who she has always doted on. She made it very clear to him that he and Meghan are always able to come back if they change their minds and she will welcome them with open arms. Hopefully the chat cleared the air and the way forward is looking more positive. But she wanted to make certain Harry knew there were limits and the whole set-up is subject to a review after 12 months.”

On Saturday just hours after announcing they would stop using the word ‘royal’ in their branding after this year’s spring, Harry and Meghan put a new statement on their own website
saying that while neither the government nor the Queen herself own the word ‘royal’ internationally, they would stop using the title.

The statement read:
‘While there is not any jurisdiction by The Monarchy or Cabinet Office over the use of the word “Royal” overseas, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex do not intend to use “Sussex Royal” or any iteration of the word “Royal” in any territory (either within the UK or otherwise) when the transition occurs Spring 2020.’
They also complained that the palace is treating them differently to other family members and argued that their £3million – £6million worth of security cost to protect them and their son’ is necessary when they relocate to Canada.
The statement comes after the Queen employed top lawyers to stop the Duke and Duchesss from using the ‘Sussex Royal’ in merchandize or businesses and would affect Harry and Meghan as they have spent tens of thousands of pounds building the Sussex Royal-branded website and creating Sussex Royal themed social media page.

As shared in early January on this website, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex do not plan to start a ‘foundation’, but rather intend to develop a new way to effect change and complement the efforts made by so many excellent foundations globally.
The creation of this non-profit entity will be in addition to their cause driven work that they remain deeply committed to. While The Duke and Duchess are focused on plans to establish a new non-profit organisation, given the specific UK government rules surrounding use of the word ‘Royal’, it has been therefore agreed that their non-profit organisation will not utilise the name ‘Sussex Royal’ or any other iteration of ‘Royal.’

Following lengthy and complex talks, the Queen and senior officials are believed to have agreed it is no longer tenable for the couple to keep the word “royal” in their “branding” because “they simply cannot sell themselves as royals”.

Harry and Meghan spent tens of thousands of pounds on a new Sussex Royal website to complement their Sussex Royal Instagram account. They also sought to register Sussex Royal as a global trademark for a range of items and activities, including clothing, stationery, books and teaching materials. In addition, they have taken steps to set up a new charitable organisation: Sussex Royal, The Foundation of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

Though the details are still being thrashed out, it is understood the couple have accepted that, as part of their new working arrangements, they will not be able to use the Sussex Royal name as they had hoped.

A royal source said “The Duchess is said to be frustrated that she was forced to stay out of politics after getting engaged to Harry, she has strong political opinions and will now take advantage of the greater freedom she has to express them publicly.”

After becoming a Royal, Meghan, an American citizen, retained her American citizenship, and in 2018 reportedly told a close associate that her ultimate ambition was to be president of the U.S.

Shortly after they announced the news, Meghan’s estranged father spoke out, telling Us Weekly: “I’ll just simply say I’m disappointed.”

Thomas Markle and her daughter have been estranged for so many years. He has not had contact with her even before her wedding to Prince Harry in 2018.

Oprah Winfrey said in a statement to ET: “Meghan and Harry do not need my help in figuring out what’s best for them. I care about them both and support whatever decisions they make for their family.”
