In the latest draw, Manchester United will take on La Liga champions, Atletico Madrid, with PSG to face Real Madrid.

This comes days after Barcelona confirmed last Thursday that Messi would not sign a new contract with the Spanish club amid financial concerns “and structural obstacles” which prevented Messi from renewing.

After Messi confirmed his exit from the club, PSG offered Messi an initial two-year deal, thought to be worth £25m a year after tax, and the six-time Ballon d’Or winner and his representatives are now reviewing and considering it carefully.

Now lawyers at the Spanish club have filed a complaint to the European Court of Appeals, stating the Parisians should be stopped in their pursuit of Messi based on financial data.

Juan Branco confirmed the complaint on Twitter: ‘On behalf of FC Barcelona partners, my firm has prepared a complaint with the European Commission and demands for provisional suspension before civil and administrative courts in France to prevent Paris-Saint Germain from signing Lionel Messi. PSG’s ratios in terms of ‘Financial Fair Play’ are worse than those of FC Barcelona. In 2019-2020, PSG’s salary-to-income ratio was 99%, while Barcelona’s was 54%. Meanwhile, the difference has increased. It is inconceivable that the ‘Financial Fair Play’ serves to aggravate the drifts of football-business, the instrumentalization of football by sovereign powers, and the distortion of competitions.’

The report claims PSG will fall foul of FFP with the signing of Messi, and reveals that Barcelona couldn’t renew the star’s contract because even after a 50 per cent pay cut, the club’s wage bill would be 110 per cent of the cap, according to Marca.

It also reportedly pointed at the Ligue 1 side’s active summer this year, with Gianluigi Donnarumma, Sergio Ramos, Achraf Hakimi, and Georginio Wijnaldum all arriving at the Parc de Princes.

They already have the massive wages of Kylian Mbappe and Neymar to shoulder.

Messi confirmed in an emotional press conference that he will be leaving Barcelona this summer after a lifetime at the club, and is now finalising terms with PSG.

Barcelona announced the six-time Ballon d’Or winner will not be staying at the club ‘because of financial and structural obstacles’.  The 34-year-old has been a free agent since July 1 when his contract expired at the Nou Camp.

According to Betfair, PSG is the odds-on favourites to sign him at 10/11, with Manchester City second-favourites at 21/10.

City boss Pep Guardiola has made no secret of his desire to be reunited with his former Barcelona team-mate but with the £100m rival of Jack Grealish from Aston Villa and their interest in £150m Harry Kane, could see Messi join PSG instead.

However, it is French side PSG who are the odds-on favourites to sign him at 10/11, while Manchester United are outsiders at 18/1”

Messi made 778 appearances for Barcelona, scoring 672 goals which have helped to secure 10 league titles, four Champions Leagues and three Club World Cups among his haul of 35 trophies.

Pochettino joined PSG in January and penned a deal until June 2022.  His contract with the French giants now runs until June 2023.

The 49-year-old was a surprise contender for the vacancy at former club Tottenham Hotspur, following the departure of Jose Mourinho, but talks stalled and Tottenham moved for Nuno Espirito Santo instead.

Neymar, who left Barcelona to join PSG for a world record fee of 222 million euros in August 2017, could make a surprise move back to Barca this summer.

Tebas said “In my opinion if Neymar behaves better, he can be a great player, but I think behaviour and the values that we set as a competition are also very important. I prefer another type of player. Neymar is a great player , but if the example off the pitch is not correct, then to be honest I’d prefer him not to come to the Spanish league.”

The Brazilian arrived at the police station wearing a black suit and on crutches because of an injury to his right ankle. Investigator Juliana Bussacos met Neymar amid a media frenzy as a crowd of fans cheered the 27-year-old.

Neymar denies any wrongdoing and was accompanied by his lawyers to the meeting. The player posted a seven-minute video to Instagram on Sunday in which he denied the accusation and insisted it was a set-up.

The player is also being investigated in Rio de Janeiro for publishing images of his accuser on social media without her authorisation.

According to a Brazilian publication, UOL Sport, Neymar had held a conversation with the woman through the social media platform Instagram and, through a friend, arranged for her to travel to Paris.

It is said that Neymar arrived drunk at her hotel, the Sofitel Paris Arc de Triomphe, on May 15 before becoming aggressive and violent and then raping her. The woman claimed she was left shaken by the experience and returned to Brazil on May 17. Her complaint is reported to have been filed last Friday in Sao Paulo.

She told police that Neymar arrived at the hotel that night ‘apparently drunk,’ and that they talked and ‘caressed’. ‘However, at some point, Neymar became aggressive, and through violence, practiced sexual intercourse against the will of the victim,’ the police report says.

In a statement released on Monday, the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) said: “Daniel Alves will be captain of the Brazilian national team in the friendly matches against Qatar and Honduras and in Copa America Brazil 2019. The decision was communicated to Neymar by Tite on Saturday.”

Brazil coach Tite had named Neymar as permanent captain a few months after Brazil’s World Cup quarter-final exit at the hands of Belgium last year, but has been under pressure to replace the 27-year-old due to his disciplinary issues.

Herrera’s contract expires at the end of June and the 29-year-old is expected to join PSG on a free transfer this summer after agreeing terms with the Ligue 1 champions.

Herrera confirmed his departure in a video released on Manchester United’s official Twitter account.
