On February 25, 2023, the National Assembly elections were held concurrently with the presidential vote. Nonetheless, the Red and Green chambers of the government’s legislative branch will be populated by a new group of lawmakers, including some familiar faces who are returning.

However, eight names are missing from the list that was just made public because, as the commission indicated, supplemental elections would be held in the affected senatorial districts.

Enugu East, Kebbi North, Plateau Central, Sokoto East, North and South, Yobe South, and Zamfara Central are among the impacted districts.

Sani said this in a statement obtained by in Kaduna on Thursday, The PUNCH reports.

Recall that the Nigerian Senate, in a resolution on Wednesday, gave legislative backing to the Central Bank of Nigeria’s plan to redesign the  naira notes in circulation.

The motion termed ‘Redesign Of The New Naira Notes By The CBN: A Call For Legislative Support’, noted that pulling the cash outside the banks would do well for the economy as monetary policy decision making would become easier.

The motion led to a rowdy session in the Upper Chamber of the National Assembly.

However, the Senate, after the rowdy session, offered to provide legislative support for the policy.

It also mandated the Senate Committee on Banking and Financial Institutions to go on oversight to ensure that Nigerians were adequately protected from the CBN, banks and other agencies involved in the process.

Explaining the substance of the motion,  Sani in the statement said based on the arguments and deliberations by his colleagues, he presented that over 80% of naira notes were hoarded outside the banks.

The lawmaker noted that the motion sought to checkmate currency counterfeiting resulting from the prolonged use of the same notes.

“Less notes, especially outside the banking system, will curb terrorism financing. In the same vein the less cash available outside the banking system will reduce corrupt practices engendered by cash exchanges,” he said.

According to him,  the Senate consequently resolved to provide legislative support for the CBN’s policy to redesign the higher value naira notes.

“It has also resolved to direct my committee to embark on an aggressive oversight of the currency redesign process to ensure that Nigerians are protected during the process,” he added.

Sani, who is also the All Progressives Congress governorship candidate in Kaduna, urged Nigerians to comply with the CBN’s directive to deposit cash holdings at their respective commercial banks.

“I also urge the Senate to support the decision of the CBN given the aforementioned benefits of the currency redesign to the nation,” he added.

The Chairman of Revenue Mobilization Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC), Mohammed Bello Shehu, when he appeared on Channels Television Sunrise Daily programme on Friday.

He said this while denying the notion that the review of the remuneration the RMAFC has embarked on is to increase the salary of politicians and political office holders.

Shehu, in sharp contrast to some people’s perception, Nigerian lawmakers and ministers don’t have jumbo salaries.

He said, “There are lots of lapses there (remuneration), so this is what has informed us to do this exercise now, it is not true that we are just trying to like put a bonus or a jumbo package to president, governors and legislators, and contrary to what a lot of people perceive and believe to be so that legislators and senators have jumbo salaries, no; there is no legislator, no senator, no minister that earns over a million naira a month in Nigeria.”

The RMAFC Chairman said the remuneration review exercise was ordered by President Muhammadu Buhari following a recent serious agitation for review of salary of judges, adding that they are going beyond just salaries to fix other issues as well.

He reportedly died on Wednesday night, 29 July.

Pa Fasanmi was a Senator on the platform of UPN in the Second Republic.

The Afenifere leader, who hails from Ekiti State died at age 94.

Fasanmi’ son, Folabi confirmed the news of his death on Thursday morning 30 July.

Folabi said, “With great gratitude to the  Almighty God for a life well spent, we wish to announce the demise of our father, Senator AYO FASANMI at the ripe age of 94 years.

“The Second Republic Senator who until his death was a leader of the Yoruba Socio Cultural Group, Egbe Afenifere (ILOSIWAJU YORUBA) and a Chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, APC, passed on peacefully in Osogbo on Wednesday night.

“The burial arrangement will be announced by his immediate family in conjunction with his political associates and the South West Governors.

“He was born 25th September, 1925.”

A former Lagos State lawmaker, Segun Olulade, confirmed this to The PUNCH on Monday.

“It is true. He passed away after a brief illness,” Olulade said.

Another report confirmed that Osinowo had earlier tested positive to coronavirus in Lagos state and was in isolation till his death.

A member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in his constituency revealed that his family members and party members were at the isolation centre to receive his body.
