A homeless man in Mississippi made deputies arrest him because he wanted to get out of the cold.

It happened in Natchez, Mississippi. Thursday morning, according to Adams County Sheriff Travis Patten, who said the incident underscored the need for greater resources to aid the area’s homeless.

Patten said the man showed up at his office and asked deputies if he could be jailed because it was too cold outside, according to the Natchez Democrat.

He said the deputies told the man they couldn’t do that for liability reasons and the man then told them, “I will make you lock me up then,” according to the paper.

After that exchange, the man then broke windows in the courthouse across the street and in the sheriff’s office.

He was charged with vandalism. His name wasn’t released.

“If there was a shelter he would not have to have committed a crime to have been able to get out of the cold and could have also had a hot meal,” Patten told the paper.

A 24-year-old man was sentenced Tuesday to life in prison without parole for running over and killing a sheriff’s deputy in southeastern Michigan in 2017, according to a report.

Christopher Berak was convicted last month for first-degree murder and the murder of a police officer, Fox 2 Detroit reported.

“I’m sorry for what I did. I hope that they’re all doing OK,” Berak had said before sentencing, per the news outlet.

Berak was accused of leading Lapeer County deputies on a car chase and deliberately hitting the cop at an intersection.

Deputy Eric Overall, 50, a 22-year veteran of the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office, was hit outside his car on Thanksgiving 2017 while deploying “stop sticks” to deflate Berak’s tires.

Berak’s car rolled over, and he was arrested.

Berak’s defense said he had no intention of striking the deputy and was reacting to the stop sticks on the road.

Earlier in the day, Berak had told authorities at the Lapeer County jail he was “God” and came to break out one of his “sons.”

“He was a man of honor and integrity. On and off duty, he always strived to do the right thing. … Eric had a big heart and wore it on his sleeve,” Overall’s wife, Sonya, said about her husband at the sentencing this week.

“My father impacted so many lives, like Sonya just said — raised me and my brother up to be the best men we could be,” the cop’s son, Kenneth Overall, said. “My father was a great man, always selfless. That Thanksgiving morning, it will be a day we’ll never forget. Every morning, every day we relive it.”

“We wish we had him back,” he added.

A Texas sheriff’s deputy has been arrested on charges that he unlawfully strip-searched at least six women in less than two weeks.

Floyd Berry, 49, was arrested Saturday and charged with three misdemeanour counts of official oppression, investigators said in a news release, cited by the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

Berry, an 18-year veteran with the Bexar County Sheriff’s office, was placed on leave after multiple people came forward alleging misconduct.

The allegations prompted the investigation.

Officials said Berry had “unlawfully strip-searched” six women while on patrol in late November and early December, the release said.

Berry was arrested Saturday and charged with three misdemeanour counts of official oppression.

He was booked into the Adult Detention Center with bail set at $45,000, the San Antonio Express-News reported.

Jail records showed Berry remained in custody. Court records did not list an attorney who could speak on his behalf.

Police were asking anyone with information on Berry’s alleged conduct to call the Bexar County Sheriff’s Public Integrity Unit.

A Washington state woman with a restraining order was shot and killed by her estranged husband while sitting in a minivan with her mother and three young children, authorities said.

“After ongoing domestic violence, abuse and being released on bail, my brother-in-law decided to take my sister’s life into his own hands,” Tabitha Ojeda said on GoFundMe Wednesday, a day after the shooting at an elementary school in Hazel Dell, Wash. “With my mother, sister and three kids in the car he shot through the front windshield and driver’s side.”

Ojeda was the sister of Tiffany Hill and the sister-in-law of Keland Hill, 38.

Ojeda said her mother had been shot three times and was expected to survive.

The children weren’t hurt.

After the shooting, Hill led deputies on a short pursuit and then killed himself with a bullet to the head, the Clark County Sheriff’s Office said.

Court documents show a history of domestic violence acts by Hill against his wife, the Columbian newspaper reported.

In the latest incident, on Nov. 7, police arrested Hill on a stalking charge after being accused of affixing a GPS tracker to her car, according to the paper.

A judge increased Hill’s bail in the case to $250,000 on Nov. 15 but rejected a prosecutor’s request for electronic monitoring.

A week later, Hill posted bail and secured his release, the paper reported. On the day of the murder, he was granted permission to use a vehicle to go back and forth to work.

“She was a mother, a sister, a daughter, a veteran and did not deserve to go this way,” Ojeda said.

Authorities say feral hogs attacked and killed a woman outside a Southeast Texas home where she worked as a caretaker.

Christine Rollins cared for an elderly couple at their home in the small town of Anahuac.

“Unbelievably tragic. This is a very rare incident, just what little research we have found less than six of these have been reported in the nation,” Chambers County Sheriff Brian Hawthorne said.

Hawthorne said Monday the 84-year-old woman she cared for was waiting for Rollins to arrive on Sunday. The woman went outside and found the 59-year-old Rollins in the front yard between her car and the front door.

Hawthorne says Rollins had a severe head wound and several other injuries consistent with an animal bite. The coroner in neighbouring Jefferson County ruled Monday that Rollins bled to death after an attack by feral hogs. Texas’ KATU2 reported that the medical examiner said the cause of death was “exsanguination due to feral hog assault.

Anahuac is just over 40 miles east of Houston.

Police in Virginia are on the hunt for a former U.S. Marine that deserted his post last month and is now wanted in the killing of his mother’s boyfriend.

The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office obtained an arrest warrant Monday for Michael Alexander Brown, 22, in connection with the shooting death of his mother’s boyfriend, Rodney Brown, several days earlier.

Deputies were dispatched to a Franklin County home at around 12 p.m. Saturday over reports that the homeowner was found dead on the property. Investigators later determined that the victim was allegedly killed by his live-in girlfriend’s son, who was later identified as Brown.

The sheriff’s office said in a press release Sunday that Michael Brown’s last known address was near the victim’s — although it was not immediately clear if they lived in the same home — and he was likely driving a 1976 Cadillac.

A later update said that Brown ditched his car and might be in a 2008 Lincoln Town Car with North Carolina license plates.

Little is known about Brown’s motive for the killing or his whereabouts. The sheriff’s office said he “has been known to live in the woods and frequent National Parks and National Forest.”

He is also considered “armed and dangerous.” Police said he is believed to be armed with a high-powered rifle and “may have access to other weapons.”

Brown was a combat engineer in the Marines before he deserted his post at Camp Lejeune in Jacksonville, N.C. on Oct. 18.

A warrant for his arrest was issued for second-degree murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.

“Foul play” was said to have been involved in the demise of a 21-year-old female University of Mississippi student found dead near a lake this weekend, officials said.

The Lafayette County Sheriff’s Department said that the body of Alexandria “Ally” Kostial was found Saturday morning in Harmontown, located about 20 miles from the Ole Miss campus in Oxford, Miss.

Sheriff’s officials told FOX13 Memphis “foul play” was apparent, but no cause of death was immediately released.

Neighbors in the area told WMC-TV that the remote neighborhood was swarmed by first responders on Saturday morning.

“I was sitting on the couch and saw the ambulance go by and was curious and went outside and then the next thing I know the coroner came by and two unmarked vehicles,” Michelle Bramlett told the television station.

Deputies with the Lafayette County Sheriff’s Department and the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation Crime Lab are “actively working” the case, in addition to the University of Mississippi Police Department and the Oxford Police Department, FOX13 reported.

Officials from the sheriff’s office said they are not releasing any additional information at this time.

Kostial was from St. Louis, Missouri and was a 2016 graduate of Lindbergh High School, FOX2 reported.

The 21-year-old was working toward a bachelor’s degree in marketing in the School of Business Administration at the University of Mississippi.

University of Mississippi Interim Chancellor Larry Sparks said in a statement to FOX13 the school was “truly saddened” by her death.

“Ally was a valued member of our campus community,” Sparks said. “We extend our deepest sympathy to her family, friends and classmates and stand ready to support them during this time. We appreciate the work of the Lafayette County Sheriff’s Department and Coroner as they conduct their investigation.”
