One year after a female student of the Shehu Shagari College of Education, Sokoto State, Deborah (Samuel) Yakubu, was killed by some extremist Muslim students over alleged blasphemy against Islamic Prophet, Mohammed bin Abdullah, the Nigeria Police Force has said it is still on the trail of prime suspects culpable in the immolation.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Sokoto State Police Command, Abubakar Sanusi, confirmed the development during a telephone interview.

The deceased, a 200-level student was set ablaze on May 12, 2022, after she reportedly advised her classmates against posting religious contents on their department’s WhatsApp group which was created for academic purposes.

Videos of Deborah being stoned, beaten with sticks and immolated by some of her Muslim colleagues, which was seen by our correspondent, was shared widely on all social media platforms.

Few days after the incident, the police announced the arrest of two suspects; Bilyaminu Aliyu and Aminu Hukunci, in connection to Deborah’s murder, and they were arraigned on May 16, 2022, at the Sokoto Chief Magistrate Court for their alleged participation in the crime.

However, a total number of 34 lawyers led by one Professor Mansur Ibrahim, allegedly sponsored by some public figures, stormed the court in defence of the suspected killers.

But responding to an inquiry by our correspondent on Saturday, the PPRO, DSP Sanusi, said the police were still on the trail of some of the prime suspects, adding that several arrests had been made in connection to Deborah’s death.

He stated that the arrested suspects had been arraigned.

Sanusi said, “We’re still on the trail of some of the prime suspects in connection with the murder. However, we have made arrest, and we’ve charged all the arrested suspects to court since then.

“The case is at the Chief Magistrate Court 1 in Sokoto, and the arraigned suspects were/are remanded at the Nigerian Correctional Service, Sokoto State Correctional Centre since 2022.”

Some Muslim youths are planning a protest in Sokoto State to demand the release of two suspects arrested in connection with the gruesome murder of Deborah Yakubu.

Deborah, a Christian youth and 200-level Home Economics student of Shehu Shagari College of Education in Sokoto, was mauled and burnt to death for alleged blasphemy of Prophet Muhammad (SAW).

In a notice circulating online, the youths agreed to meet at the Gawon Nama Roundabout by 9am.

Two phone numbers were scribbled on the notice but the date of the meeting was not stated in the e-flyer written in Hausa.

The translated version of the notice read, “We are calling on Muslims in Sokoto State to gather where there was a riot to save brethren in Islam that are battling the faith of Islam and upholding the respect of prophet of Allah S.A.W.”

The Police Public Relations Officer in Sokoto, Sanusi Abubabar, confirmed the brewing protest in a telephone interview

We are on top of the situation,” he said, adding that the police authorities in Sokoto are in talks with leaders of thoughts and opinion moulders in the state.

The police in Sokoto had confirmed the killing of Deborah by extremists on Thursday.

“Students forcefully removed the victim from the security room where the school authorities hid her, killed her and burnt the building. The students banded together with miscreants and barricaded the Sokoto/Jega road,” the PPRO had said in a statement.

“Two students were arrested in connection with the crime committed. The school has been closed down by the school authority, and policemen were deployed to give tight security coverage,” Abubakar had added.

Many civil society groups and lawyers have condemned the murder of Deborah while some persons have defended the mob action.

Sokoto, a state in Nigeria’s North-West has a more Muslim population than Christians and there have been cases of sectarian strife and religion-triggered extrajudicial killings.

The Sokoto state government has embarked on the development of about 800 hectares of land, with an improved variety of top quality grains and pasture

The initiative, aside from complimenting the feeding requirement of the animals, is also targeted to improve the yield of the national herd and turn around the economy of the rural poor who rely on livestock rearing and farming for their sustenance.

Aside from planting maize, sorghum, soya beans and other grains on the expanse of land, a feed mill will also be established to process animal feeds, as part of the state government reforms for the livestock sector.

Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Tambuwal, who highlighted these at the flag-off of the pasture development programme of the breeding programme, held at his local government, Dogon Daji, noted that the programme will address the problems that the country’s livestock sub-sector is facing.

Tambuwal, represented by the state Commissioner of Animal Health and Fisheries Development, Professor Abdulkadir Junaidu, reiterated that population explosion and competition for scarce resources has placed significant pressure on the economy of the rural poor, with the attendant consequences of violence, characterized by

According to him, “Sokoto state pride itself as a major contributor to the nation’s huge livestock resources being home to some of the country’s best cattle breeds, inherently built for meat and dairy production.

“However, the potentials have not been properly harnessed due to inherent low-performance genetic traits, endemic livestock diseases, poor pasture quality occasioned by variability in annual rainfall and a system of production that hasn’t gone beyond the traditional pastoralism, which is not only old fashioned but empirically proven to be unproductive. With the rolling out of the Sokoto Cattle Breeding Programme, the state government aims to improve the quantity and quality of our local stock, through a mix of natural breeding insemination and embryo transfer technologies.”
