The Yoruba Self-Determination Movement, led by Prof Banji Akintoye and Chief Sunday Adeyemo, alias Sunday Igboho, has written an open letter to President Bola Tinubu, seeking a peaceful breakaway of Yoruba people from Nigeria.

The open letter, dated April 17, 2024, was signed by both Akintoye, Igboho and one Ola Ademola.

They called on the President to within the next two months set up a negotiation team to negotiate the exit of the Yoruba people from Nigeria.

The letter by the Yoruba Nation arrowheads came about a week after some armed agitators invaded the Oyo State Government House, attempting to hoist their flag on the premises of the state House of Assembly.

The agitators were subdued and 29 of them were last week taken before a magistrates’ court in Ibadan, which ordered that they should be remanded in the prison custody.

Both Akintoye and Igboho dissociated themselves from the violent action.

However, in their open letter made available to our correspondent in Ibadan on Sunday, the Yoruba Self-Determination Movement, said, “We have the honour to send to Your Excellency this important letter on behalf of the many millions of Yoruba people at home in Yorubaland in Nigeria and in the Yoruba Diaspora in almost all countries across the world.

We send this letter as a follow-up to our earlier letter, dated August 06, 2022, which we delivered to your predecessor, President Muhammadu Buhari, in his exalted position then as President of Nigeria.

“Since 2015, the Fulani have been killing widely among the other peoples of Nigeria, including us Yoruba, destroying farms, villages and other assets, kidnapping men, women and children, extorting large amounts of money as ransom from friends and family of the kidnapped, and repeatedly asserting their intention to seize the homelands of all the indigenous peoples of Nigeria for the purpose of turning all into a Fulani homeland.”

The group said in the Middle Belt, horrendous blood-letting was going on with many families forced into Internally Displaced People Camps while many of their villages were seized by the Fulani and renamed as Fulani villages.

“In our Yoruba homeland, our people are resisting somewhat better, but the Fulani attacks and killings and kidnappings are unrelenting and are coming daily, leading to horrific instability, and forcing most of our farmers to abandon farming altogether, thereby dooming Yoruba people to years and years of famine.”

It further alleged that an unofficial estimate showed that Fulani had killed as many as 29,000 Yoruba people since 2015 till date, adding that aforementioned reasons were enough for them to seek breakaway from Nigeria.

“All these actions by the Fulani are, to us Yoruba, a sufficient reason for our seeking to separate our Yoruba Nation from Nigeria. Most of us, Yoruba have no confidence in the ‘restructuring’ that some of our most respected Yoruba leaders (such as our fathers in our highly exalted Afenifere) are advocating.

“And our reason is that we know that restructuring cannot keep the Fulani marauders away from our homeland.  Since, after restructuring, the Fulani would still be Nigerians like us, and would still have full citizens’ rights to come in large numbers, and with weapons and intent to kill and destroy and seize land, to our homeland.

The Fulani elite seem to be saying in effect that they intend to make Nigeria ungovernable for President Tinubu, and that they would never accept any official action of his.

“We are acting for and on behalf of our 60 million Yoruba people of the Ekiti, Lagos, Ogun, Ondo, Osun, and Oyo State, respectively, plus the Yoruba Local Government Areas of Kogi and Kwara State, and plus the Itshekiri homeland of Delta State, all together constituting the Yorubaland in Nigeria, hereby most humbly place our crowning request before Your Excellency as follows:

“That the Nigerian Federal Government shall, within the next two months, but not later than June 15, 2024, inform us Yoruba Self-determination Movement that the Nigerian Federal Government has graciously agreed to our proposal for negotiation and that they have set up a negotiation team that will meet and have a dialogue with our Yoruba Nation’s negotiation team.

“That the Nigerian Federal Government shall invite the United Nations, African Union and the Economic Community of West African States, to send observers to the negotiation meetings.”

It, therefore, promised to forward the list of its negotiation team to the government as soon as it received a message in response to its request for the negotiation.

Yoruba rights activist, Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, has begun a fresh negotiation with the Benin Republic government over his health status.

Counsel for the detained activist, Chief Yomi Aliyyu, made this known on Thursday.

He explained that Igboho is negotiating to be moved to another detention facility over his health status.

According to Aliyyu, reports that Igboho has fled to Germany is not also true.

In a statement titled, ‘Re: Purported release of Sunday Igboho’, the lawyer said, “Kindly discountenance any news about the release of Chief Sunday Adeyemo or that he is on his way to Germany. It is not true, please.

“With the assistance of a worldwide renowned professor and prof Akintoye and lawyers (Falola and myself), we are negotiating for something more comfortable for him than prison to meet his health demand.

“I advise you to remain calm and prayerful

Aliyyu earlier announced that previous negotiations to get Igboho freed didn’t yield the desired result.

Instead, he said Benin Republic renewed Ignoho’s incarceration despite that there was no criminal charge against him and no extradition request from the Nigerian Government.

Igboho, who escaped from a deadly raid on his Ibadan residence by the operatives of the Department of State Service on July 1, 2021, was arrested in Benin Republic on his way to Germany on July 19 together with his wife, Ropo.

His wife was released by Igboho and has been in detention since then and if the extension of his incarceration is allowed to stay, he may spend at least one year in detention in the country.

One person was feared killed and many confirmed injured on Saturday when armed thugs attacked the Soka residence of Yoruba Nation agitator, Sunday Adeyemo aka Sunday Igboho, in Ibadan, Oyo State.

Igboho’s lead lawyer, Yomi Aliyyu (SAN), confirmed the attack in a telephone chat with The PUNCH on Saturday.

Our correspondent also obtained footage of the injured aides of the Yoruba Nation campaigner.

According to Aliyyu, the armed thugs stormed Igboho’s residence and macheted the associates of the Yoruba Nation campaigner, leaving one of his aides dead.

He said the hoodlums attacked the same house of the agitator that the Department of State Services attacked on July 1, 2021.

The secret police had stormed Igboho’s Ibadan residence in a Gestapo style around 2am on July 1, 2021. The secret police killed two of the agitator’s associates and arrested 12 others who were released months later

Declared wanted by the secret police for allegedly stockpiling arms to destabilise Nigeria, an allegation he denied, Igboho escaped to the neighbouring francophone country in July 2021.

However, luck ran out on him and he was arrested by Interpol at a Benin airport when he tried to board a Germany-bound flight.

He had since been remanded in a prison in Benin Republic for over six months where he is said to be facing trial for immigration-related offences, amongst others.

The government of the Republic of Benin has extended the incarceration of Yoruba Nation activist, Sunday Adeyemo aka Sunday Igboho, for another six months.

Counsel to Igboho, Yomi Alliyu (SAN), disclosed that the Benin Republic government has renewed the incarceration without any hearing.

Alliyu had stated that “the government of the Republic of Benin has renewed the incarceration of Chief Sunday Adeyemo a.k.a Igboho Oosa for another six months even though there is no criminal charge in their file in Cotonou and without extradition request from Nigeria.”

Igboho has been in detention in Benin Republic since he was arrested at the Cotonou airport by the West Africa’s nation security forces while he was trying to visit Germany in July 2021. The 49-year-old agitator left Nigeria for Benin Republic after the Federal Government declared him wanted and he has since spent over 200 days in detention in Benin Republic prison.

A Beninise court had blocked the extradition move of Igboho to Nigeria while ruling that the activist be remanded in prison pending further hearing.

A Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Chief Yomi Aliyyu, who is the counsel for Yoruba nation activist, Chief Sunday Adeyemo, aka Igboho, has said there is nothing to show that the Federal Government is serious about using political solution to secure Igboho’s release.

Igboho, whose house was raided by operatives of the Department of State Services on July 1 was arrested on July 19 in Benin Republic while travelling to Germany together with his wife, Ropo.

The wife was released but Igboho has remained in detention in Benin Republic since then.

The Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, SAN, had on November 11 during a press briefing, said the Federal Government would not rule out political solution to resolving separatist agitations in the country.

Speaking on Wednesday, Igboho’s lawyer said his client welcomed the offer and wrote a letter to the AGF about it, yet his client had yet to see anything to suggest that the Federal Government meant what Malami said.

Aliyyu said, “The Federal Government has not done anything to show that it is interested in political settlement of the matter notwithstanding the fact that we have accepted the move openly and vide a letter to the AGF demanding, inter alia, compliance with the judgment of the court.I think they want to test their stand with the Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court, forgetting that any pronouncement by appellate courts that self-determination is a fundamental right will definitely open a pandora box of agitations that may not be contained by the Federal Government. This is good for agitators in South-West, South-East, Middle-Belt, South-South and all people demanding self- determination. In any case, federation connotes some regions coming together with right of ingress and egress. Positive pronouncements on self-determination will allow ethnic nationalities the right to renegotiate the 1914 amalgamation that majority of Nigerians now believe has outlived its usefulness.”

Asked if there is any hope that Igboho would be released before the end of the year, the lawyer said there was no such hope because of the stance of the DSS on the matter.

Recall that Justice Labiran Akintola of the Oyo State High Court had ruled in favour of Igboho in a case of enforcement of human rights filed by Aliyyu.

The court held that agitation for self-determination by Igboho was his right. The court also awarded N20bn damages against the DSS for invading his house.

The Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, on Monday, adjourned the arraignment of two aides of Yoruba Nation agitator, Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, till January 24, 2022.

The adjournment followed the absence of any Yoruba interpreter in court.

The Defendants- Jamiu Oyetunji and Amudat Babatunde- were among the 12 persons that were arrested and detained after a midnight raid the Department of State Services, DSS, conducted at Igboho’s residence on July 1.

They are facing a fresh five-count terrorism charge the DSS preferred against them.

It will be recalled that the security agency had on September 8, through its lawyer, Mr I. Awo informed the court that a gang of mobile armed robbers commonly known as ‘One Chance’ operators, highjacked its case file on a fundamental rights enforcement suit Igboho’s aides filed to challenge their arrest and detention.

The court had on the strength of the fundamental right suit, granted bail to all the 12 detainees.

However, in the fresh charge marked FHC/ABJ/CR/305/2021, which was signed by S. M. Bello, the DSS alleged that the 1st Defendant, Oyetunji, was in possession of firearms for terrorism-related activities.

It further alleged that the 2nd Defendant, Amudat, helped to promote acts of terrorism, using her Facebook page.

Some of the counts in the charge, a copy of which was sighted by Vanguard, read: “That you Jamiu Noah Oyetunji, Amudat Habibat Babatunade, adults, with others still at large, on or about the 1st day of July 2021, at the residence of one Sunday Adeniyi Adeyemo (aka Sunday Igboho), located at Soka area of Ibadan, Oyo State within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court, did conspire to commit acts of terrorism, to wits possession of prohibited firearms: contrary to Section 17 of Terrorism (Prevention) (Amendment) Act, 2013 and punishable under the same section of the Act.

“That you Jamiu Noah Oyetunji, Amudat Habibat Babatunade, adults with others still at large, on or about the 1st day of July 2021, at the residence of Sunday Adeniyi Adeyemo (aka Sunday Igboho) located at Soka area of Ibadan, Oyo State, within the jurisdiction of this Honorable Court, did have in your possession, without lawful authority, the under listed prohibited firearms:

“Five (5) AK 47 rifles with serial numbers 04956, 213740, 8673, 945999 and 6139 respectively, Two (2) AK 47 rifles whose serial numbers could not be identified; Two (2) pump action rifle with serial numbers 8836 and 9398 respectively; One (1) pump action which serial number could not be identified; and One (1) stun gun.

“Contrary to Section 1(3)(c)(v) of the Terrorism Prevention Act CAP 10, 2011 and punishable under Section 1(2) of the Terrorism Prevention (Amendment) act 2013”.

The duo was in count three of the charge, alleged to have had in their possession, without lawful authority, 1,295 live rounds of 7.62mm ammunition and 221 live rounds of 5.56mm ammunition, contrary to Section 1(3)(c)(v) of the Terrorism Prevention Act CAP 10, 2011 and punishable under Section 1(2) of the Terrorism Prevention (Amendment) Act 2013.

When the matter came up on Monday for the arraignment of the Defendants, their lawyer, Mr Pelumi Olajengbensi, told the court that his clients do not understand the English language.

The effort by the court to secure the service of an interpreter proved abortive, a situation that led Justice Obiora Egwuatu to adjourn the matter till next year.

The Federal Government says it has established a link between Yoruba nation agitator, Sunday Adeyemo aka Sunday Igboho, and a Boko Haram sponsor, Surajo Muhammad, who was sentenced to life imprisonment in the United Aram Emirates on charges of financing terrorism.

The government also alleged that between 2013 and 2020, Igboho received N127m from several financiers including a federal lawmaker. The government, however, refused to reveal the identity of the lawmaker.

The Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami (SAN), said this while reading out findings of a Presidential committee set up to investigate Igboho and leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu.

The 24-member committee comprised members of the Federal Ministry of Justice, the Federal Ministry of Information, the Nigeria Police Force, the Department of State Services, the National Intelligence Agency and the Defence Intelligence Agency.

Malami said, “The report revealed that Sunday Igboho is a Director and signatory to Adesun International Concept Limited registered on April 23, 2010. Adesun International Concept Limited also has Oladele Oyetunji and Aderopo Adeyemo as directors. Sunday Igboho is linked to 43 bank accounts in nine banks.

Malami said “The major financier of the fugitive and separatists was found to be a federal lawmaker in the National Assembly. A total sum of N127, 145,000 was received by Igboho from his financiers between October 22, 2013, and September 28, 2020, through Adesun International Concept Ltd accounts. A total sum of N273,198,200 transaction outflows was recorded from Sunday Igboho’s account between March 15, 2013, and March 11, 2021. Investigation reveals that Adesun International Concept Ltd (belonging to Igboho) transferred the sum of N12, 750,000 to AbbalBako& Sons. Abdullahi Usman is by way of financial transaction connected to Surajo Abubakar Muhammad (who was sentenced to life imprisonment in UAE on charges of financing terrorism (Boko Haram). This report shows the nexus between separatists’ agitation, terrorism financing and disruptions of peace in the country,”

The report found connections of financial transactions between Adesun International Concept Ltd (belonging to Igboho) and some construction companies and businesses among others.

Malami stated that having received the reports, the Federal Government remains solute in its determination to have a peaceful Nigeria.

“The Federal Government will do the needful, within the context of the legal provisions, in ensuring that the matter is given the deserved attention and those found guilty will be made to face the wrath of the law,” he said.

Yoruba Nation agitator, Sunday Igboho, has been reportedly diagnosed with possible kidney or lungs illness.

One of his lawyers, Yomi Aliyyu, who disclosed this in an interview with BBC Yoruba, said Igboho developed the illness in Benin Republic prison custody. According to him, the agitator has also been critically ill and rushed to the hospital for treatment.

Recall that Igboho’s home in Ibadan was raided by security agents on July 1, 2021. While Igboho escaped, 12 of his aides were arrested and later arraigned in court.

Igboho was later arrested in Cotonou, Benin Republic, on July 16, 2021, with his wife, while attempting to travel to Germany and has since then been in detention.

Speaking during the interview, Aliyyu said “Igboho was not diagnosed with this sickness before he was arrested in Cotonou. It was so critical that they had to rush him to the hospital. I can’t tell if he has been returned to the prison from the hospital but what I know is, he’s battling ill health and it seems his kidney and lungs are already being affected. Even though I cannot tell which part of his body the sickness has really affected, I know it has to do with his internal organs.”

Sources in the umbrella body of Yoruba self-determination groups, Ilana Omo Oodua, confirmed the development.

“Yes, he is ill and his kidney appears affected. We are not very sure yet. Another test result is expected for confirmation. We are working on that and I can assure you that he is in safe hands,” one of the sources said.

The Federal Government may file a fresh case against Yoruba Nation agitator, Sunday Adeyemo popularly known as Sunday Igboho.

The Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami stated this after the judgment of Oyo State High Court which awarded N20 billion in damages in his favour.

Malam disclosed this to NAN in New York that the Federal Government may file fresh charges against the agitator.

The judge, Ladiran Akintola, had awarded the money as “an exemplary and aggravated damages” against the AGF and the Department of State Services, over the invasion of Igboho’s home in Ibadan on July 1.

However, Malami said the position of the Federal Government on the judgment was about “law and jurisdiction”.

“As far as this matter is concerned, which court is it that has the jurisdiction to determine it? And as you rightly know, obedient to court orders and court judgments,” he said.

“But then you have to understand within the context of such obedience that there are associated rights and interests that are vested in the Federal Government.

“Inclusive of rights of appealing against a judgment, inclusive of right to file an application for settingaside the purported judgment and order.

“And indeed, inclusive of the possibility of filling a fresh action if indeed the jurisdiction of the court that was alleged to have indeed handed that judgment is an issue.

“So, we are doing the needful in terms of looking at the law as it exists and then working within the context of the law in ensuring that justice is done as far as the contending issues between the parties are concerned,” the minister was quoted as saying.

The court had awarded N20 billion against DSS for the “illegal” invasion of Igboo’s home in Ibadan on July 1.

Following the raid, Igboho sued the Federal Government and demanded ₦500 million as special damages for the damage done to his house and his car and another N500 billion as exemplary and aggravated damages.

Reacting to the judgement in a statement by its spokesperson, Maxwell Adeleye, the umbrella body of the Yoruba self-determination Group, Ilana Omo Oodua, asked the DSS to pay the N20 billion damages in the interest of peace.

The statement was titled, ‘N20 billion Fine Against DSS: Verdict Symbolises Triumph of Light, Truth Over Gladiators of Illegalities – Ilana Omo Oodua’.

Part of the statement read, “We thank the judiciary for re-affirming that self-determination is one of the fundamental human rights of the citizens that cannot be subjugated.

“Our position is that this verdict symbolises the triumph of light and truth over darkness. Ighoho represents the light and truth, while the Nigerian state stands for illegalities.

“Our position now is that the Nigerian Government should be honourable by respecting the verdict of a court of competent jurisdiction. The #20billion damages ordered by the court to be paid to Ighoho by the DSS must be paid with immediate effect in the interest of peace.”
