The US military base in Al-Tanf, Syria, was hit by a coordinated attack on Wednesday with a drone strike and possible ground fire, that US officials say was a ‘coordinated attack’

No US troops were injured and it is not clear who carried out the attack. The base is used to train local Syrian forces against the Islamic State

This is the third attack in Syria on Wednesday alone following a bus bombing that killed 14 and a shelling that killed 13 on Wednesday, October 20.

A US official said the attack appeared to include at least one drone strike and possibly groundfire at the base in Al-Tanf, Syria, which houses some of the 900 US soldiers in Syria. The base is also located on a road serving as a vital link for Iranian-backed forces from Tehran, all the way to southern Lebanon and Israel.

‘Explosions resounded from the Al Tanf base used by the US-led coalition fighting Daesh group, the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said in a statement. Daesh is a name used locally for ISIS.

The official who spoke on condition of anonymity said there was no information on whether local Syrian forces were injured or killed in the attack.

A US Air Force F-15 fighter jet shot down an Iranian drone that posed a threat to troops stationed in eastern Syria

‘Coalition aircraft successfully engaged and defeated a UAS through air to air engagement in the vicinity of Mission Support Site Green Village,’ US Army Colonel Wayne Marotto, who heads the US-led coalition against ISIS, told Reuters, using an acronym for an unmanned aircraft system.

Fox News reporter Lucas Tomlinson said an F-15E shot the ‘Iranian’ drone, which flew ‘too close’ to the 900 US troops in the area on Satuday, according to a tweet citing US officials.

Green Village is an outpost where US troops are housed in former oil industry villas next to a major Syrian oil field, according to the Washington Post.

Officials also told Aviation Week that the drone was ‘deemed a threat and self-defense measures were taken.’

The Pentagon last month said it was deeply concerned about attacks on U.S. personnel in Syria and Iraq.

Just last month, two US service members were wounded after 14 rockets hit an Iraqi airbase hosting US forces, according to Reuters.

Iraqi militia groups aligned with Iran had vowed to retaliate after US strikes on the Iraqi-Syrian border killed four of their members in June

The latest show of force in Syria comes after US withdrawal from Afghanistan, where the terrorist Taliban have taken over most of the country.

Multiple rockets have hit a US military base in eastern Syria on Monday, June 28, less than 24 hours after US President Joe Biden launched airstrikes on Iranian-backed militia sites on the Iraq-Syrian border.

Coly. Wayne Morrotto, the spokesman for Operation Inherent Resolve, said: ‘At 7:44 PM local time, U.S. Forces in Syria were attacked by multiple rockets. There are no injuries and damage is being assessed.’

The attack took place at a site known as the ‘Green Village’ near an oil field, where 900 American troops are believed to be stationed. A US defence official speaking to CNN said the rockets were ‘likely’ fired by Iranian-backed militia in the area, but the origin had not yet been officially determined.

Some of the missiles landed near US troops, according to the report.

The overnight strikes were President Joe Biden’s second strike of his administration and have sparked fears of further escalation between Tehran and Washington during faltering efforts to revive Iran’s nuclear deal.

Two targets were attacked in Syria, with a third also bombed in Iraq. The Pentagon said multiple Iran-backed militia groups including Kata’ib Hezbollah (KH) and Kata’ib Sayyid al-Shuhada (KSS) had been hit. The Pentagon released video footage from the cockpit of the attack Monday morning. Iraq on Monday condemned the strikes saying they violated Iraqi sovereignty.

Iraq’s Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhemi condemned the attack as a ‘blatant and unacceptable violation of Iraqi sovereignty and Iraqi national security. ‘Iraq reiterates its refusal to be an arena for settling scores,’ Kadhemi added in a statement, urging all sides to avoid any further escalation. Iranian foreign ministry spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh said the Biden administration was ‘taking the wrong path’ in the region and was continuing the ‘failed legacy’ of the Trump administration.

‘Instead of emotional actions and creating tensions and problems in the region, the U.S. should change its behaviour and let the regional people establish security without Washington’s interference,’ he said during his weekly news conference.

Wikipedia’s list of failed states has been updated and Nigeria is now one of the countries on the list.

The free web-based encyclopedia project which contains information on a wide variety of subjects described a failed state as a political body that has disintegrated to a point where basic conditions and responsibilities of a sovereign government no longer function properly.

It further added that a state can also fail if the government loses its legitimacy even if it is performing its functions properly. For a stable state, it is necessary for the government to enjoy both effectiveness and legitimacy. Likewise, when a nation weakens and it’s standard of living declines, it introduces the possibility of total governmental collapse.

Some countries listed as a failed state include; Syria, Somalia, Myanmar, Nigeria, Iraq, Yemen, Turkey, Democratic Republic of Congo, Central African Republic, Rwanda, Liberia, Yugoslavia, Lebanon, Afghanistan, Sudan, South Sudan.

ISIS released a video Thursday that purportedly shows militants in black masks beheading 10 blindfolded Christian men and shooting an 11th in Nigeria, as part of a grisly campaign to avenge the deaths of its leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi and the group’s spokesman.

The militant group’s video was produced by its own so-called news agency, Amaq, and was released the day after Christmas.

The 56-second video has Arabic captions but does not have audio.

In the video, ISIS soldiers wearing beige uniforms and black masks are lined up behind the Christian men. One captive in the middle is shot while the other 10 are pushed to the ground and beheaded. Not a lot of details were given about the victims other than they were male, Christian and “captured in the past weeks” in Nigeria’s north-eastern Borno State.

In an earlier video seen by Reuters, the captives pleaded for the Christian Association of Nigeria and President Muhammadu Buhari to intervene to save them.

“We killed them as revenge for the killing of our leaders, including Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi and (ISIS spokesman) Abul-Hasan al-Muhaiir,'” said a member of the terror group’s media unit, according to journalist Ahmad Salkida, who was first sent the video shot in an unidentified outdoor area.

In October, Baghdadi killed himself during a U.S. raid on a compound in northwest Syria, seven months after the so-called ISIS “caliphate” officially crumbled as the terrorist group was defeated in its final swath of Syrian territory in March.

Raphael Gluck, the co-founder of Jihadoscope, which monitors online activity by Islamist extremists, told Fox News that ISIS affiliates are rising across Africa – almost unchecked.

“We saw a terrible ambush of U.S. forces in Niger in 2017, that played into ISIS propaganda for months and really put Africa in focus, it has only grown in strength since,” he said.

The fugitive leader of the Islamic State (IS) group has been killed in a US military operation in northwest Syria, President Donald Trump has said.

Speaking from the White House, Mr Trump said Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi detonated his suicide vest during a raid by special forces late on Saturday.

Baghdadi came to prominence in 2014, when he announced the creation of a “caliphate” in areas of Iraq and Syria.

IS carried out a number of atrocities that resulted in thousands of deaths.

The jihadist group imposed a brutal rule on almost eight million people in the areas under its control and was behind a number of attacks in cities around the world. The US declared the “caliphate” defeated earlier this year.

In an unusual Sunday morning statement, Mr Trump said US special forces executed a “daring night-time raid” and accomplished their mission in grand style.

“He died after running into a dead-end tunnel, whimpering, crying and screaming all the way, Mr Trump said. “The thug who tried so hard to intimidate others spent his last moments in utter fear, in total panic and dread, terrified of the American forces bearing down on him.”

No US soldiers had been killed but a number of Baghdadi’s followers also died, Mr Trump said, adding that “highly sensitive material and information” had been gathered.

Rep. Justin Amash, I-Mich., continued on Sunday his criticism of President Trump’s decision to withdraw U.S. military forces from northern Syria, saying the president is using troops as “paid mercenaries” and questioning the role Congress should play in the decision-making process.

In an interview on NBC’s “Meet The Press,” Amash said it was “pretty clear” from the outset that Trump had no plans of bringing the U.S. troops deployed in northern Syria back to American soil.

“He’s moving troops back into Iraq. He’s moving other troops into Saudi Arabia,” said Amash, who earlier this year left the Republican Party over his disagreements with Trump.  “He’s using our forces as paid mercenaries. What happened to the American people having their voices heard through their representatives in Congress.”

U.S. Defense Secretary Mark Esper said over the weekend that under current plans all U.S. troops leaving Syria will go to western Iraq and the American military will continue to conduct operations against the Islamic State group to prevent its resurgence.

Esper, who arrived in the Afghan capital on Sunday, did not rule out the idea that U.S. forces would conduct counterterrorism missions from Iraq into Syria. But he told reporters traveling with him that those details will be worked out over time.

His comments were the first to specifically lay out where American troops will go as they shift from Syria and what the counter-ISIS fight could look like. Esper, who flew overnight to Afghanistan, said he has spoken to his Iraqi counterpart about the plan to shift about 1,000 troops leaving Syria into western Iraq.

Turkey announced on Wednesday that as a result of the first death reports, its ground forces invaded northeastern Syria in just a few hours after launching preliminary attacks in the area to fight the Kurdish army.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan launched the “Peace Spring” action on Wednesday after President Trump announced that the United States will withdraw from the region. It is believed that this has dealt a blow to the US-backed Kurdish forces there. Erdogan said the mission was to “eliminate the terrorist threat to Turkey and lead to the establishment of a safe area to promote the return of Syrian refugees.”

Activists and a war monitor said that at least seven civilians have been killed in a Turkish strike in northeastern Syria since the Syrian attack on Wednesday morning.

Trump told reporters on Wednesday that if the country does not act in the most ‘humane way’, he will do “far more than sanctions” to Turkey, and he hopes that Erdogan can act rationally. When asked what would happen if Erdogan wiped out the Kurds, Trump threatened to “eliminate” the Turkish economy and said he had done so.

The Kurdish forces in northeastern Syria, with the help of the United States in the region, guarded thousands of captured ISIS fighters.

The president said that the terrorists arrested were “the real bad guys and should return to Europe.”

Earlier Wednesday, Trump warned Turkey that the initial offense was a “bad idea.”

Trump said in a statement in the White House: “The United States does not approve of the attack and has made it clear to Turkey that this action is a bad idea.” “Turkey is committed to protecting civilians and protecting religious minorities, including Christians.” To ensure that there is no humanitarian crisis, we will abide by this commitment.”

A spokesman for the Syrian Democratic Forces led by Kurdish said on Wednesday that it “started air strikes against civilian areas” and caused “a huge panic among the people of the region.”

US military officials told Fox News that after the Kurds demanded that the US military provide air support, the president ordered the US military not to participate in the strike.

According to Bloomberg News, a group of Turkish troops entered the northeastern part of Syria for the first time on Wednesday morning, close to Tal Abiad and Ras Al Ain. According to the Turkish state-run Anadolu News Agency, the artillery units subsequently shelled suspicious Syrian Kurdish targets in Talabad, while two mortar shells attacked the Turkish border town of Cheran Pinar.

Trump said: “We have said to various countries, we hope that you will bring back your people. No one wants them, they are very bad.” He added, “Maybe if they are not, the Kurds in Turkey will solve” . Fighting with ISIS

The president said that if the fighters escape, they will “return to Europe.”

Trump said that this situation is “unfair” for the United States, and entering the Middle East is “the most serious mistake in the history of the United States.”

He said: “We are doing [Europe, Russia, Iran, Iraq, Turkey, Syria] work that should be done. […] We are 7,000 miles apart.

President Trump announced on Sunday that the United States will withdraw US troops from northern Syria, a move that puts the US-backed Kurdish forces (long-term allies fighting Syria and ISIS) at risk. Ankara believes that the Syrian Kurdish forces are terrorists and are allied with the Kurdish uprisings in Turkey.

Syria’s foreign minister on Saturday demanded the withdrawal of all U.S. and Turkish troops, warning that the Syrian government had the right to take “countermeasures” if they remain.

Walid al-Moallem made the demand in an address at the U.N General Assembly Saturday.

There are about 1,000 U.S. troops in Syria to battle Islamic State militants. Turkey has forces in Syria targeting ISIS and Kurdish fighters.

“The United States and Turkey maintain an illegal military presence in northern Syria.” al-Moallem told the U.N. General Assembly on Saturday. “Any foreign forces operating in our territories without our authorization are occupying forces and should withdraw immediately.”

“If they refuse, we have the right to take any and all countermeasures authorized under international law,” he said.

Over more than eight years, Syria’s devastating civil war has drawn numerous foreign militaries and thousands of foreign fighters battling for power.

Most of the country has returned to government control. But rebels and extremists still hold Idlib in the northwest, and the oil-rich northeast, held by U.S.-backed Kurdish groups.

President Trump last year ordered the complete withdrawal of U.S. troops from Syria – but then agreed to let some forces remain to ensure ISIS militants cannot regroup, Reuters reported.

Doctors from Pakistan, India, Iran, Afghanistan, Syria, Lebanon and Iraq have written a letter to President Buhari asking the Nigerian government to transfer Sheikh Ibrahim El-Zakzaky to a well-equipped hospital as soon as possible.

According to Fars News, an Iranian news agency, a total number of one hundred and eighty six doctors wrote to the president pointing to the physical condition of the leader Islamic Movement of Nigeria

Fars News quoted one of the signatories to the letter, Dr. Pourrahim Najafabadi, as saying that Zakzaky needs to be cured by an experienced medical team of physicians in a specialized multi-specialty hospital outside Nigeria.

Below is the full text of the letter:

“In the name of God, The healer

From the community of Doctors

To the President of the Republic of Nigeria, Mr. Buhari.

In the past several months, the world has constantly received troubling news regarding the health of one of the prominent figures in Nigeria, Shaikh Ibrahim Zakzaky. Both Skaikh Ibrahim Zakzaky and his wife are kept in prison and the health status of both of them is very alarming.

We have chosen to be doctors even after knowing that this job is very difficult and troublesome, but we chose to save people’s lives and preferred the health of the society over our personal interests.

According to the medical reports regarding the health status of Sheikh Ibrahim Zakzaky:

1. He is suffering from a total blindness in the left eye, and is also suffering from vision problems in the right eye including glaucoma and progressive macular atrophy. According to the diagnosis of the visiting physicians, Shaikh Zakzaky will lose his vision sooner or later if the current circumstances do not change.

2. He has shown symptoms of Ischemic heart disease which can lead to Myocardial Infraction.

3. He is also suffering from severe cervical spondylosis which has resulted to nerve root compression and symptoms are progressive causing insomnia.

4. The experiments show that he has heavy metal toxicity including Lead and Cadmium. Laboratory tests that are performed on May 31st, 2019 show that blood lead level is 171.94µg/dl. Later on June 18th, 2019 this level was reported to be 231.48µg while in the last laboratory test the blood lead level was three times more than the toxicity level (grade 5 of poisoning).

Based on the points highlighted above, Shaikh Ibrahim Zakzaky should be transferred to a well- equipped medical center that has Neuro-ophthalmologist, glaucoma specialist and low vision expert, cardiologist, orthopedist and neurologist. Also he may need to have a surgery to reduce intraocular pressure.

We, doctors of different nationalities cannot take the health of any human for granted. This is something that is inherent in our obligation as doctors. Ignoring the critical health status of Sheikh Ibrahim Zakzaky can end up in irreparable consequences.

We request the government and parliament of Nigeria to immediately transfer him to a well-equipped hospital to prevent any unfortunate incidents.
