The Grammy winner edged out top stars like Kirk Franklin, CeCe Winans, Maverick City Music, and others to win the Dr. Bobby Jones Best Gospel/Inspirational Award with her 2023 song, Me & U at the 2024 ceremony.

The BET Awards, established in 2001 by Black Entertainment Television, is an American award show that recognises and celebrates the achievements of Black entertainers and other underrepresented groups in music, film, sports and philanthropy.

In 2022, Tems won the award the BET awards for Best International Act and Best Collaboration for Wizkid’s ‘Essence’.

She also won the Best Collaboration award for her song with Drake and Future “Wait for U” in 2023. The song also received the same price at the BET Hip Hop Awards in 2022.

South African star Tyla also won the awards for Best New Artist and Best International Act earlier in the night.

Tems was nominated for the award alongside Rihanna, Ludwig Göransson, and Ryan Coogler, who were all significant contributors to the song

Tems co-wrote the song, which was performed by Rihanna and released on November 4. The record paid tribute to Chadwick Boseman, who played a lead role in the franchise before he died in 2020 after a battle with colon cancer.

Reacting to news of her nomination, Tems tweeted: “My God!! this one is too much.”

The singers were arrested on Sunday, December 13, and charged with doing “acts that are likely to cause the spread of infectious disease, Covid-19” following the illegal concert at Ddungu resort in Munyonyo with large crowds while the country is on lockdown.

They were arraigned before the Makindye division court on Monday, December 14 and remanded in different prisons till Wednesday, December 16.

Following the outcry from Nigerians and some diplomatic moves made by the Nigerian government, the charges against them have now been dropped

The fast-rising stars were on Sunday, December 13, arrested together with their managers for holding an illegal concert at Ddungu resort in Munyonyo where they gathered big crowds, contrary to President Museveni’s directives on the prevention of the spread of Covid-19.

It was gathered that the organizers of the event disguised the show as a lunch and dinner event but it turned out to be a concert with a large crowd in attendance.

Omah Lay, Tems, and the others were arrested and charged with doing “acts that are likely to cause the spread of infectious disease, Covid-19,” according to him Assistant Superintendent of Police and Deputy Police Spokesperson, Luk Owoyesigyire, Kampala Metropolitan Police.
