Turkey’s President, Recep Tayyip Erdogan has ordered the ambassadors of 10 countries, including the U.S., France, and Germany, to be declared “persona non grata” after calling for the release of jailed Turkish activist, businessman and philanthropist Osman Kavala.

The move comes a few days after Turkey summoned the ambassadors of the U.S., Germany, France, Canada, Denmark, the Netherlands, Finland, New Zealand, Norway, and Sweden over their joint statement calling for Kavala’s release on the fourth year of his detention.

“The continuing delays in his trial, including by merging different cases and creating new ones after a previous acquittal, cast a shadow over respect for democracy, the rule of law and transparency in the Turkish judiciary system,” the joint statement said. “Noting the rulings of the European Court of Human Rights on the matter, we call for Turkey to secure his urgent release.”

Kavala has been in detention without a conviction since 2017. He was acquitted on charges last year related to the 2013 Gezi Park protests. The verdict was overturned, and new charges were brought against him for his alleged involvement in the 2016 attempted coup.

Erdogan has now placed the ambassadors of the ten countries as ‘personal non-grate. Persona non grata literally means “an unwelcome person.” “I gave the necessary instructions to our minister of foreign affairs,” Erdogan said in a speech over the weekend, October 24.  “I told him what to do. I said that you will deal with these 10 ambassadors being declared persona non grata as soon as possible.”

The Turkish president added the ambassadors should leave the country if they do not understand Turkey. If the country’s Foreign Ministry takes the order, it can move forward with the process without further approval paving the way for their expulsions.

The Turkish Foreign Ministry called the joint statement is “irresponsible” and said it rejected what it called attempts to influence the court system. Last week the Turkish president criticized the countries calling for Kabaka’s release, labelling him a terrorist.

“Who are you? What is it? Leave Kavala. Do you leave the bandits, murderers, terrorists in your own country?” Erdogan said to journalists on Thursday. “Why do 10 ambassadors make this statement? Those who defend this [George] Soros leftover are trying to get him released. I told our Minister of Foreign Affairs that we cannot afford to host them in our country. Is it your place to teach such a lesson to Turkey?”

Reacting to the move, European Parliament president David Sassoli tweeted that the expulsion of ambassadors is a “sign of the authoritarian drift” of the Turkish government.

“We will not be intimidated,” he said. “Freedom for Osman Kavala.”

The Austrian Foreign Ministry says it “deeply regrets” Turkey’s announcement to declare then 10 ambassadors “persona non grata.”
In a tweet Saturday, the ministry called for a “fair and timely resolution” of Osman Kavala’s case and for the implementation of the European Convention on Human Rights’ judgments.

The Federal Government has warned Nigerians against travelling to countries that are recording a third wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, especially India where they largely go-to for medical tourism.

It also listed South Africa, Turkey and Brazil in the travel advisory.

The Presidential Steering Committee on COVID-19, formerly Presidential Task Force on COVID-19, also has warned Nigerians against shunning safety protocols against the virus, saying the pandemic was not over.

The National Incident Manager, PSC, Dr Mukhtar Muhammad, spoke at the media briefing by the committee on Monday.

Muhammad said, “While we continue to reopen the economy, we must also be aware of the happenings around the globe. Mr Chairman (Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha) and the Honourable Minister of Health (Prof. Osagie Ehanire) have referred to specific incidents in India, Turkey, Brazil and South Africa. We sympathise with the people of these countries because it is really a very trying time, particularly for India, recording over 300,000 cases a day and recording over 2,000 deaths. India is a prime destination for medical tourism for Nigeria. We know that many Nigerians like to travel – to go to India but now… we urge Nigerians to limit all travels to only essential travels, particularly to these affected countries.”

Wikipedia’s list of failed states has been updated and Nigeria is now one of the countries on the list.

The free web-based encyclopedia project which contains information on a wide variety of subjects described a failed state as a political body that has disintegrated to a point where basic conditions and responsibilities of a sovereign government no longer function properly.

It further added that a state can also fail if the government loses its legitimacy even if it is performing its functions properly. For a stable state, it is necessary for the government to enjoy both effectiveness and legitimacy. Likewise, when a nation weakens and it’s standard of living declines, it introduces the possibility of total governmental collapse.

Some countries listed as a failed state include; Syria, Somalia, Myanmar, Nigeria, Iraq, Yemen, Turkey, Democratic Republic of Congo, Central African Republic, Rwanda, Liberia, Yugoslavia, Lebanon, Afghanistan, Sudan, South Sudan.

The earthquake reportedly struck on Friday at 8.55pm local time, near the town of Sivrice in eastern Elazig province, the Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency said.

Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu said four people had died. Defense Minister Hulusi Akar told reporters that there were no reports of any casualties in Sivrice but said the quake may have caused casualties in rural areas outside the town.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban on Wednesday said his country would “use force” to protect its borders if Turkey followed through on its threat to “open the gates” of Europe to refugees.

Orban, a staunch opponent of mass migration, made the comments during an appearance on Hungary’s HirTV.

“The next weeks will decide what Turkey does with these people,” Orban said, referencing the 3.6 million Syrian refugees Turkey is currently hosting.

At the peak of the migration crisis in 2015, hundreds of thousands of migrants and refugees entered Europe by way of the Balkan route. Hungary, which was on the frontlines of that wave, implemented strict border controls and a fence across its border.

Turkey agreed to take in many of those refugees and ease the burden on Europe when it signed a deal with the EU in 2016 to seal off the Aegean route. But Turkey has received international condemnation for its invasion of northeast Syriafollowing President Trump’s decision to withdraw U.S. forces there.

Last week, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan threatened to unleash refugees into Europe if the EU called Turkey’s invasion of Syria an “occupation.”

“We will open the gates and send 3.6 million refugees your way,” Erdogan reportedly said while speaking with officials from his ruling AK Party, according to Reuters.

Depending on how events unfold in the coming weeks, Orban said, Turkey will either take its refugees “back to Syria or set them off towards Europe.”

“If Turkey chooses the latter, these people will arrive at Hungary’s southern border in huge masses,” Orban said. “If Turkey sets off further hundreds of thousands on top of this, then we will need to use force to protect the Hungarian border and the Serbian-Hungarian frontier and I do not wish for anyone that we should need to resort to that.”

Vice President Mike Pence and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo reached a cease-fire agreement between Turkey and Kurdish-led forces in Syria, following a meeting with Erdogan in Ankara on Thursday.

The deal is for a 120-hour cease-fire, during which time the Kurdish-led forces could pull back. Turkish military operations will pause during that time, and the operation itself will come to an end upon the completion of the Kurdish withdrawal. Pence said a safe zone between the two sides will be established.

Turkey announced on Wednesday that as a result of the first death reports, its ground forces invaded northeastern Syria in just a few hours after launching preliminary attacks in the area to fight the Kurdish army.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan launched the “Peace Spring” action on Wednesday after President Trump announced that the United States will withdraw from the region. It is believed that this has dealt a blow to the US-backed Kurdish forces there. Erdogan said the mission was to “eliminate the terrorist threat to Turkey and lead to the establishment of a safe area to promote the return of Syrian refugees.”

Activists and a war monitor said that at least seven civilians have been killed in a Turkish strike in northeastern Syria since the Syrian attack on Wednesday morning.

Trump told reporters on Wednesday that if the country does not act in the most ‘humane way’, he will do “far more than sanctions” to Turkey, and he hopes that Erdogan can act rationally. When asked what would happen if Erdogan wiped out the Kurds, Trump threatened to “eliminate” the Turkish economy and said he had done so.

The Kurdish forces in northeastern Syria, with the help of the United States in the region, guarded thousands of captured ISIS fighters.

The president said that the terrorists arrested were “the real bad guys and should return to Europe.”

Earlier Wednesday, Trump warned Turkey that the initial offense was a “bad idea.”

Trump said in a statement in the White House: “The United States does not approve of the attack and has made it clear to Turkey that this action is a bad idea.” “Turkey is committed to protecting civilians and protecting religious minorities, including Christians.” To ensure that there is no humanitarian crisis, we will abide by this commitment.”

A spokesman for the Syrian Democratic Forces led by Kurdish said on Wednesday that it “started air strikes against civilian areas” and caused “a huge panic among the people of the region.”

US military officials told Fox News that after the Kurds demanded that the US military provide air support, the president ordered the US military not to participate in the strike.

According to Bloomberg News, a group of Turkish troops entered the northeastern part of Syria for the first time on Wednesday morning, close to Tal Abiad and Ras Al Ain. According to the Turkish state-run Anadolu News Agency, the artillery units subsequently shelled suspicious Syrian Kurdish targets in Talabad, while two mortar shells attacked the Turkish border town of Cheran Pinar.

Trump said: “We have said to various countries, we hope that you will bring back your people. No one wants them, they are very bad.” He added, “Maybe if they are not, the Kurds in Turkey will solve” . Fighting with ISIS

The president said that if the fighters escape, they will “return to Europe.”

Trump said that this situation is “unfair” for the United States, and entering the Middle East is “the most serious mistake in the history of the United States.”

He said: “We are doing [Europe, Russia, Iran, Iraq, Turkey, Syria] work that should be done. […] We are 7,000 miles apart.

President Trump announced on Sunday that the United States will withdraw US troops from northern Syria, a move that puts the US-backed Kurdish forces (long-term allies fighting Syria and ISIS) at risk. Ankara believes that the Syrian Kurdish forces are terrorists and are allied with the Kurdish uprisings in Turkey.

A Turkish teenager dove feet-first into a selfless act once he discovered a stray cat trapped in a well filled with fuel oil.

Özgür Ege Şire, aged 19, had been walking through a forested area in the northern Ünye district when he heard strange muffled noises that seemed to be emanating from the well. When he looked down into the darkness he saw the small cat covered in the muck.

While some may have waited for help or even a rope, Şire decided to jump in immediately to save the struggling feline, according to the Daily Sabah.

Şire saved the cat but became covered in the thick oil, forcing him to require some assistance in getting out. People nearby heard the commotion and were able to lift the teenager out and take him to a nearby hospital.

Şire was seen wiping his eyes on a medical stretcher after the ordeal, while covered head to toe in the thick oil.

Both Şire and the cat survived thanks to his quick thinking and he hopes others can have the same love for animals that he does.

“I hope we can instill a love for animals in all people,” he said.

A terrible earthquake hit on Friday near the Greek capital of Athens, triggering the residents to run into the streets in fear and firefighters to check for people trapped in elevators.

The Athens Institute of Geodynamics gave the earthquake a preliminary magnitude of 5.1 but the U.S. Geological Survey tagged it as a magnitude of 5.3. The Athens Institute says the quake struck at 2:13 p.m. local time (1113 GMT) some 23 kilometers (14.2 miles) north of Athens.

Authorities inspected areas close to the epicenter by helicopter and police patrols but no deaths or serious injuries were reported. Government spokesman Stelios Petsas said that one abandoned building had collapsed in a western district of Athens and that several other abandoned buildings had suffered serious damages in other parts of the city.

“There are no reports of serious injuries … I urge members of the public to remains calm, in Greece we are well acquainted with earthquakes,” he said.

The earthquake caused limited power cuts and communication problems around Athens and the fire brigade reported receiving calls about people being trapped in elevators. The shock was caught live in the studios of state broadcaster ERT.

The most powerful earthquake to hit the Greek capital in the last 20 years came in 1999, when a temblor of magnitude 6.0 caused extensive damage and killed more than 140 people.

Gerasimos Papadopoulos, the senior seismologist at the Geodynamics Institute said Friday’s quake was felt across southern Greece.

“It had a very shallow depth and that’s why it was felt so strongly,” he said. “It is too early to say whether this was the main earthquake, but there have been aftershocks of magnitude 3.5, 2.5 and 3.2 and that is encouraging. But we need more time and data to have a clear picture.”

Earthquakes are common in Greece and neighboring Turkey.

A car bomb detonated near Turkey’s border with Syria on Friday, killing two Syrians and critically injuring a third inside the vehicle.

The blast went off inside the vehicle at about 2,460 feet meters from a local government office in the neighboring town of Reyhanli, according to the Anadolu Agency, also adding that two people were also wounded as a result of the explosion. The Turkish news agency stated several ambulances and police vehicles were sent to the scene.

“It is clear that there was a bomb inside the vehicle,” said Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. “The findings at the moment indicated that it was more linked to terrorism… Our colleagues are looking into who was behind this.”

Erdogan, however, did not say the number of injuries that was caused by the explosion, but Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu said that the blast was caused by a hand-made bomb which set-off while the car was in transit.

In May 2013, twin car bomb attacks in Reyhanli took the lives of 52 people, including Syrian refugees. The Turkish government blamed Syria’s intelligence agency for what was one of the deadliest attacks in their modern history.

In 2015 and 2016, Turkey was also badly hit by a series of attacks blamed on ISIS and Kurdish militants that left 300 dead.
