The United Kingdom Embassy in Nigeria on Tuesday announced a temporary suspension of study, work, and family priority visa applications.

This became necessary as priority is now being placed on applications made under the Ukraine Family Scheme in response to the humanitarian crisis arising from the invasion of Ukraine.

Details of the suspension was contained in a statement posted on the Embassy official Twitter page on Tuesday.

The statement further noted that Nigerians, whose passports were ready for collection, would be contacted by the Visa Application Centre.

“UK Visas and Immigration is currently prioritising applications made under the Ukraine Family Scheme, following its launch and in response to the humanitarian crisis arising from the invasion of Ukraine.

“As a result, UKVI has temporarily suspended priority and super-priority services for new study, work, and family applications. Customers with standard applications in study, work, and family routes may experience some delays in the processing of their application.

“We are still currently unable to offer PV for visitor applications in Nigeria. Standard visitor visa applications are currently taking an average of six weeks to process.

“Applicants will be contacted by the Visa Application Centre (VAC) when their passport is ready for collection. They should not attend the VAC until they have been invited to do so.

“Where there are extremely compassionate or compelling circumstances (for example, a medical emergency), UKVI may consider expediting specific cases. However, the bar for this is high and will be assessed on a case-by-case basis. If a request is exceptionally urgent, applicants can contact UK Visas and Immigration for help. Please note that this is a chargeable service for overseas customers.

“We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.”

The British High Commission in Nigeria says it will replace, for free, the 30-day visa of individuals that were supposed to travel to the UK before the lockdown posed by the COVID-19 global pandemic.

It said the free visa replacement which will be open till December 2020, covers those who will be travelling to the UK for work, study or to join their families.

This was contained in a statement by the Commission on Thursday titled, ‘Update on VAC Services From The BHC Nigeria’ posted on its verified Twitter handle, @UKinNigeria.

The statement read in part, “As a result of the disruptions to travel caused by COVID-19, we are experiencing high demand for replacement vignettes for 30-day visas to travel to the UK for work, study or to join family.

“If an individual’s 30-day visa to travel to the UK for work, study or to join family has expired, or is about to expire, they can request a replacement visa with revised validity dates free of charge until the end of this year. This does not apply to other types of visas. This process will be in place until the end of 2020. The replacement visa will be valid for 90 days.’

“To request a replacement visa, individuals can arrange to return their passport to their Visa Application Centre in Nigeria without an appointment.”

Recall that the Minister of Aviation, Hadi Sirika, announced on Monday that international airports would reopen for commercial flight operations effective August 29 after about five months of closure.

“Glad to announce the resumption of international flights from the 29th of August, 2020. Beginning with Lagos and Abuja as we did with the domestic flight resumption. Protocols and procedures will be announced in due course. We thank you for your patience,” the minister had said.
