The University of Ibadan, on Saturday, said it had opened a special window to all UI Post-UTME candidates who are qualified but could not gain admission to study on the face-to-face mode of studies due to limited admission quota and highly competitive admission process.

UI, in a statement by the outgoing Registrar of the institution, Olubunmi Faluyi, said interested candidates are required to effect a change in their mode of studies on the mode of study application portal of the university https://modeofstudy.ui.edu.ng to the hybrid Open Distance eLearning (ODeL) mode.

Faluyi said the institution was focused on expanding the frontiers of learning through ICT-enabled borderless education, adding that the school has set in place a seamless mobile classroom with specialised video-conferencing tools that could accommodate thousands of students at the same time to bridge the gap of space, with the compliment of course materials and supplement of interactive sessions with the course lecturers

She said, “Students in the ODeL mode of studies like their counterparts in the physical classroom mode are exposed to the same curriculum by the same university lecturers. UI ODeL students would sit for the same examinations, obtain the same UI certificates and also eligible for mobilization for NYSC scheme.

Statutory requirement to study in the University of Ibadan is five or six “O Level credits in relevant WAEC/NECO subjects in one or two sitting(s) respectively. Direct Entry and Fast Track is open to candidates with distinctions or upper credits in A’ Levels, NCE, OND, HND, Degrees from recognised institutions in relevant subject areas and work experience.

“Candidates who could not sit for the JAMB examination, but have interest to study at the premier university can seize this opportunity to also apply and be admitted to study at the university via the flexible Open Distance and eLearning mode.

“The undergraduate academic programmes that students can study via ODeL in the University of Ibadan are BNS Nursing, B.Sc Computer Science, B.Sc Statistics, BSW. Social Work, B.Sc Sociology, B.Sc Psychology, B.Sc Political Science, B.Sc Economics, B.A. Communications and Language Arts, B.A. English, B.A. Philosophy and Public Affairs, B.A. History and Diplomatic Studies, B.Ed Adult Education, B.Ed Guidance and Counselling, B.Ed Educational Management, BLIS. The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, has described the President Muhammadu Buhari-led Federal Government as dictatorial.

The University of Ibadan chapter of ASUU made the remark while condemning the alleged directive by the Federal Government that her officials would move to campuses to begin enrollment of university workers on the Integrated Personnel Payroll and Information System, IPPIS.

The Chairman of ASUU in UI, Professor Deji Omole said the union cannot be harassed or intimidated by Buhari’s government which has a penchant for breaking the law.

Daily Trust reported that Omole wondered why a government under democracy was afraid of negotiation and dialogue but prefers to use force.

Omole said: “The government pronouncements to forcefully enrol university workers is an act of violence against the university system. It is worrisome for a government under democratic dispensation to resort to force rather than dialogue. If not why is the government afraid of negotiations. We are not perturbed by the directive. A government claiming to be fighting corruption should not break the law.

“The university Autonomy Act is very clear on university administrators. There is no greater corruption than those breaking the law of the land. Breaking of existing laws with impunity is the greatest corruption anywhere in the world. We refuse to be harassed or intimidated. We are not strangers in this country. We are veritable stakeholders. We cannot be harassed. We have told them what to do.”

“Let the government come back to the negotiation’s table and let us discuss the grey areas. Forceful enlistment will not solve the problem. We are not disturbed but we are worried, the government is getting dictatorial. A supposedly democratic government is getting dictatorial.”

Confirming the development on Monday evening, the Director DLC UI center, Prof Soji Aremu, said that some staff of the centre compromised in helping some students during examination.

He said “It was the management that caught them and handed them over to the DSS, for us to have the full report. They have been released on administrative bail after owing up to the crime committed. It is a plus to the management for fishing out the bad eggs and handing them over for the law to take its full course’’.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU,  has criticized President Muhammadu Buhari’s policy on education as anti-masses, while accusing the Federal Government of a deliberate plan to starve public education with funds in order to deny Nigerian youths the right to know and challenge misrule.

ASUU in a statement released in Ibadan and signed by the Chairman, University of Ibadan Chapter of the union, Prof. Deji Omole, noted that if President Buhari did not increase funding for education, all the sacrifices of understaffed and underpaid Nigerian academia would be in vain.

Omole added that it was clear that education was not the priority of the Buhari government, citing the University of Ibadan as an example of an institution presently groaning due to paucity of funds, insufficient staff, decayed infrastructure and bad laboratories.

According to him, the paucity of funds has denied over 500,000 Nigerian children who desire public university education, adding that they were rejected annually due to decayed infrastructure and reduced manpower.

He, therefore, stated that unless urgent steps were taken to cater to the needs of children of the Nigerian masses, many of them would fight back with crime.

The statement reads part: “Education is not the priority of this government. Due to paucity of funds, many universities including the University of Ibadan, the nation’s premier university, cannot admit many qualified candidates into the universities.

“This is dangerous to the society as the rejected qualified and brilliant candidates may eventually take to crimes because the country has rejected them. The policy is not only wicked but criminal.”
