The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has released the timetable for the 2020 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

This development was confirmed in a twitter post by the examination body on Tuesday.

The statement signed by Demianus Ojijeogu, WAEC’s Head of Public Affairs, reiterated that the exams begin Monday, August 17 and will end Saturday, September 12.

It, however, warned that “The Council notes that several versions of the examination timetable have been in circulation”, but “enjoined the general public to disregard them”.

Candidates have been advised to “abide by the rules and regulations guiding the conduct of the examination, by shunning all acts of malpractice and obeying all COVID-19 protocols”.

InsideOjodu recalls that the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) had earlier rejected the 2020 WASSCE, stating that said the dates clash with Muslims’ Friday prayers.

MURIC Director, Professor Ishaq Akintola, accused WAEC of creating a wedge between young Muslims and the mosque.

Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has kicked against the timetable of the 2020 West African Secondary School Certificate Examinations (WASSCE).

The body said the dates of the exam which commences on the 17th August,2020 clashes with Muslims’ Friday prayer.

Professor Ishaq Akintola, MURIC director in a statement on Monday accused WAEC of creating a fence between young Muslims and the mosque.

“There are at least three clashes between examination periods and Muslim prayers on Fridays: Management-in-Living (2 pm, Friday 14th August, 2020); Literature-in-English (2 pm, Friday 21st August); Health Science (1.30 pm, Friday, 4th September),” he noted

MURIC said the timetable is exclusive, sectional, parochial, insensitive and provocative.

It called the schedule an invitation to trouble, designed to cause pain to Muslim candidates.

“It is the handiwork of sadists and anarchists. It smirks of an anti-Muslim machinery oiled by the passion for hate and injustice. This is in spite of efforts made by us to guard against this kind of clash,” he added.

MURIC insisted that Muslim candidates must be given three hours every Friday.

Akintola added that Nigerian Muslims will emancipate themselves from slavery, serfdom and religious apartheid if government is nonchalant.

He, further, stated “Our message to WAEC is very clear and simple: Adjust your timetable and stop provoking Muslims forthwith.”

There has been demands from different quarters asking the Federal government to rescinds its decision that Nigerian Student will not participate in the West Africa Examination Council (WAEC) examination for 2020.

The House of Representatives has also thrown their weight to support those quarters by asking the Federal government to reverse its decision on the West Africa Examination Council (WAEC) examination.

The green chamber on Tuesday urged President Muhammadu Buhari to direct the ministry of Education to put in place all the necessary safety measures which will allow the students to participate in the annual examination.

The resolution followed a motion of urgent public importance moved by Nnoli Nnaji on the need to allow students to participate in the 2020 examination which was rescheduled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Nnaji explained that the Minister of State (Education), Emeka Nwajubia announced on the 6th of July that Nigeria will participate in the 2020 Senior Secondary School Examination (SSCE), adding that the decision was countered by another announcement by the minister of Education, Adamu Adamu that Federal government-owned schools will not participate in the annual examination.

Nnaji described the two announcements as confusing, adding that non-participation will have a negative impact on the students.

He said that WAEC picked the new examination date, scheduled for 3rd August to 5th of September, 2020 after consultation with health experts and the 5 governments in the council.

“The choice of the date was not arbitrary, rather, WAEC consulted extensively with the government of all 5 countries that makes up the council.”

“I am worried by these contradictory pronouncements by the two Ministers within a short period of time. I’m worried that Nigeria’s non participation in the annual exam portends psychological, social-economic and negative health of the students, and already overburdened parents and guardians.

“The decision will be devastating on our education system and Nigeria’s economy at large. It will also frustrate the students.

“By taking precautionary measures, the federal government reopened the market, airports, inter-state travel and religious centres. The government should apply the same measures.”

The motion was adopted without debate by the members of the House and directed the House committees on basic Education and health services, legislative compliance to ensure compliance.

The National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools, NAPPS has called on the Federal Government to revisit its decision on the suspension of 2020 public examinations (WAEC, NECO, etc).

Yomi Odubela, who spoke on behalf of the association in a statement on Monday made this call, adding that private schools were fully prepared and ready for the safe reopening of the schools in phases starting with JSS3 and more importantly SSS3 students who will be sitting for their WASSCE by ensuring member strictly adhere to the safety protocols recommended by NCDC to prevent the spread of COVID-19 within the school environments.

Odubela stressed that any further delay or objection by the federal government to allow students to write WASSCE 20202 may lead to a situation where Nigerian students will be forced to seek an alternative way of writing these examinations by approaching neighbouring countries such as Ghana among others and this would not be good for the image of the country.

“Private Schools under NAPPS are ready to resume with strict adherence to the safety protocols advised by the Nigeria Council for Disease Control. Based on our readiness to safely reopen schools in phases starting with JSS3 and more importantly SSS3 students who will be sitting for their WASSCE conducted by WAEC, NECO, etc, we are using this medium to call on the Federal Ministry of Education to revisit its reversal on resumption and suspension of 2020 public examinations (WAEC, NECO, etc) for the following reasons.

“Even though we appreciate the safety concerns of the Federal Government, private schools are fully prepared for safe reopening of schools with investment already made to procure safety equipment as advised by Nigeria Council for Disease Control (NCDC) to ensure the safe reopening of schools nationwide,” he said.

The Federal Government of Nigeria had revoked the planned resumption of federal schools in the country, stating that students would not be allowed to participate in the West African Senior School Certificate Examinations earlier scheduled for August 4 to September 5.

The Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, disclosed this in Abuja at the end of a meeting of the Federal Executive Council presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari.

The minister made it known that federal schools would remain shut until it is safe to reopen them.

He also pleaded with state governments that have announced school resumption plans to repeal such.

Adamu stated that the West African Examinations Council is not in the position to decide the resumption date of schools in  Nigeria.

Furthermore,  he explained and pleaded with Nigerian students to lose an academic year than to be vulnerable to heath dangers amid the coronavirus pandemic.
